Chereads / The Young Dragon / Chapter 2 - First Day Of School

Chapter 2 - First Day Of School

As Frank and Jason leave the Salvatore mansion, Jason continues to feel uneasy about this.

"Did you know that the target was a highschool teacher before you accepted the job on my behalf?" Jason asks.

Frank stays silent for a moment.

"He- may have mentioned it when we spoke on the phone a few days ago." Frank says.

Jason scoffs at his so called mentor.

"Hey, it's not like the guy is completely innocent in this situation. I mean, he is sleeping with a married woman. He breaking one of the ten commandments, a justifiable reason to die." Frank argues.

Jason sighs.

"Whatever. We already took the money so I guess there's no backing out now." Jason says.

Frank laughs, putting his arm around him.

"That's the spirit, kid. So, what's the plan?" Frank asks.

Jason moves Franks arm off of him and starts to walk away.

"Gotta do some recon." He says before leaving.

The three days later, at Hamilton High School, a beautiful girl with shoulder length black hair and a beanie steps out of a police car. She let's out a sigh and walks over to drivers side window to talk to her father.

"Do you really have to drop me off in your police car every time, dad?" She asks.

"It's just a friendly reminder that if any boy breaks your heart, I'll arrest him. Love you, pumpkin." He says with a smile.

The girl chuckles at her father.

"Love you too, dad."

She kisses her father on the cheek and then walks towards the school. She then gets excited when she sees two of her bestfriends.

"Britney! Zach!" She yells.

The two turn around, greeting her with a smile.

"Hailey!" They both yell.

The three hug and start walking together.

"Are you two ready for the last first day of highschool?" Hailey asks, excited.

"Absolutely. I can't wait to leave this place and never look back. No more homework, no more quizzes-"

Zach is then interrupted by a football player pushing him out of the way.

"No more douche bag jocks." Zach finishes.

Both Britney and Hailey laugh.

"I don't know, I'm kinda gonna miss this place a little." Britney.

"Yeah, because you were actually popular, Ms. Cheerleader." Zach replies.

Britney mocks Zach and his comments.

"What about you, Hales?" She asks.

Before Hailey can answer, someone on a motorcycle arrives, catching everyone's attention.

"Nice bike." Zach says with a smile.

The one on the bike then takes his helmet off to reveal Jason and all the girls swoon over him.

"Nice boy. Senior year just got a whole lot better." Britney says

As Britney and Zach walk inside the school, Hailey stays for a moment, looking at the new boy that just arrived. Meanwhile, Jason sees his target, Brian Miller, pulling up in a red mustang. As he watches the teacher greet students with a smile, being genuinely kind to them, he starts to get even more doubts. Then he sees Hailey and is shocked by how beautiful she is. The two lock eyes and as Hailey smiles and waves, Jason does the same. Hailey then walks inside the school as Jason is still at a loss for words.

"Wow." Jason finally says.

Later, in Mr. Miller's class, Hailey rejoins both Zach and Britney.

"Hey, what happened to you? We thought you were right behind us." Britney says.

"I- had to tie my shoes." Hailey says.

Both Zach and Britney notice the lie and smirks at Hailey.

"What?" Hailey asks with an innocent smile.

"You were checking out the new kid on the bike, weren't you?" Britney asks.

Hailey loudly scoffs.

"What? No- I wasn't... checking out nothing. It just- takes me awhile to tie my shoes." Hailey says.

"She's totally crushing on that guy." Zach says.

"Oh absolutely. Also crushing?" Britney says.

"What? People still say crushing." Zach replies.

As Hailey snickers at her two friends, the bell rings and Jason walks in, surprising Hailey.

"Excuse me, is this Ap English?" Jason asks.

"Yes it is, and you must be the new student that I'm getting. Welcome." Mr. Miller says, offering Jason a handshake.

Jason slowly shakes his hand with a smile, feeling guilty that he has to kill him.

"Alright seniors! I hope you had a wonderful summer vacation, sorry you had to come back to hear talk about books all day." Miller says.

The class laughs at Mr. Miller's joke.

"We have a new student joining us this year. This is Jason Han, and want everyone make he's welcomed here at Hamilton High. Take a seat anywhere you'd like, Jason." Mr. Miller says with a smile.

Jason nods and walk towards an empty desk that's next to Hailey.

"Is this seat taken?" Jason asks with a smile.

Hailey doesn't say anything for a moment, just smiling back at him. Britney then kicks her chair, snapping her out of it.

"No. No, it's not taken. It's all you, all yours." Hailey nervously says.

As Jason sits down both Zach and Britney chuckle to themselves at Hailey.

"Definitely crushing." Zach whispers.

"Dude, stop with the crushing." Britney whispers back.

"Alright, now we will be talking about the classic book, to kill a mockingbird." Mr. Miller says.

Later during the school day, while everyone is at lunch, Jason is in the hallway when he suddenly gets a call from Frank, who's on the beach with a tropical looking drink in his hand.

"Hey kid, have you finish the job yet?" Frank asks.

Jason sighs.

"No, not yet."

"Kid, I want to be patient with ya, but it's been three days and Richard Salvatore has been calling like crazy." Frank says

"Tell Richard Salvatore that I'm on top of things and that I'll call him when the job is done." Jason says, hanging up on Frank.

He then sees Mr. Miller walking into his classroom with his lunch in hand. Jason takes a deep breath, pulls out his gun from his jacket pocket and slowly walks towards the front door of the classroom. As he gets a clear shot, unnoticed, and is about to shoot, he hears something down the hall. He listens closely and figures out that the sound he's hearing is someone playing the piano. He then approaches the music room and sees Hailey playing the piano, putting his gun away. As he is amazed by how talented she is, memories start to come back to him of his mother playing the piano for him with a smile. After awhile longer, Hailey turns around and sees Jason behind her.

"Jesus, you scared the crap out of me." Hailey says through laughter.

"Sorry, I just- heard music and wanted to... You're amazing at that." Jason says.

Hailey smiles.

"Thanks. My grandpa taught me. Hopefully I'm good enough to get into Juilliard on a full scholarship. It's kinda my dream."

Jason then sits next to Hailey.

"Well you'll definitely get in if you keep playing like that." Jason tells her.

Hailey giggles as her face turns red.

"I'm Hailey by the way. Hailey Donovan." She says, offering her hand.

Jason shakes her hand staring into her eyes.

"It's nice to meet you, Hailey." Jason says.

The smile and stare into each others eyes for a moment longer before Hailey realizes she's been shaking Jason's hand for a long time and let's go.

"So uh- what is your plan after you graduate?" Hailey asks.

Jason stays silent, unable to think of an answer.

"I really don't know. Actually I've been feeling pretty... lost- in life lately. Feels like I don't have a purpose." Jason says.

"Well, that's what's highschool is for. To find out what our purpose in the world is. What we were made to do in our life. Something that makes us happy. That we couldn't live without." Hailey says.

As Hailey talks, Jason thinks two things to himself. One, that what she saying is one hundred percent how he feels. And two, that she is the most beautiful girl he has ever seen.

"Yeah, I agree."

The two then smile at each other again, moving closer towards each other.

"You know, you have very beautiful eyes." Jason says.

Hailey's smile gets even bigger.

"I get them from my dad." She replies.

"Remind me to thank him sometime." Jason says.

As the two are about to kiss, Britney and Zach walk in.

"Woah. Sorry, we were just... looking for Hailey." Britney awkwardly says

"And, there she is... Hi Hailey." Zach says.

As everyone feel extremely awkward, Jason gets up from his seat to leave the room.

"I should go. But it was- really nice to talk to you, Hailey." Jason says.

Hailey smiles.

"It was nice to talk to you too."

Jason nods at both Britney and Zach, then leaves the room as both Britney and Zach look at Hailey. Hailey smirks, turning back around and playing the piano.

"Nothing happened." Hailey says.

"But something almost happened. Right?" Zach asks.

"I'm not talking about this with you two." Hailey says.

"Which means there's something to talk about." Britney says.

Hailey let's out sigh as she continues to play piano, smiling at the thought of almost kissing Jason. Meanwhile as he walks down the hall, smiling about almost kissing Hailey, he then remembers what he was doing before he heard Hailey playing the piano.

"Crap." Jason says, quickly making his way back to Mr. Miller's class room.

He looks inside and sees that Mr. Miller has already left the class. Jason then sighs out of frustration, loosing the best opportunity to kill the target.
