Chereads / Ghost of Britannia / Chapter 16 - Adventurer's guild

Chapter 16 - Adventurer's guild

I've finally made it to the southernmost town of Britannia in the old nation of Bulgare.

The town seems to have been an old fort from the time of conflict between Grecia and Bulgare. Whilst here I intend to register as an adventurer in the National Adventuring Guild of Britannia, or the adventurers guild for short.

That's where I'll climb the ranks and gain power to become a powerful hero who'll protect the weak. Exactly like the king of this country.

I walk through the cobbled streets up to the adventurers guild hall. It appears to be just another manor house but the loud drunks all around told you all you need to know about this being an adventurers hall.

I walk through the large double doors into a crowd of drunks, fights seem to be breaking out here and there while people place bets.

These people seem to be having a good time.

I walk up to the front desk where a receptionist appeared to be sorting through some paperwork.

"Hello there, I'd like to register to be an adventurer please."

The receptionist looked up at me, her annoyance was evident, but she still hid it behind a typical customer service smile.

"Sure thing, sir, just give me one moment."

She pulled out a form for me to fill out along with some kind of crystal ball.

"If you could please fill out this form to detail your preferred kind of magic and how you fight, along with your name and age. Following this place your hand on the crystal ball and we will measure your magic power."

I took the form and filed it out. There was no option to say I can't use magic, so I just left it blank.

I handed my form back to the receptionist and she briefly glanced at it.

"Sir, you forgot to register your preferred kind of magic."

"Oh I can't use magic. I don't have any magic power at all."

She glanced up a look of confusion on her face.

"Sir, its impossible to be incapable of using magic, for you to even be able to use the appraise skill you need to have magic, and everyone's born with that skill. Matter of fact, for the system to even display your stats and skills it requires magic."

She says in an annoyed tone, as if it's the most basic of knowledge.

There's no point in arguing back, it's easier to just show her. And what's this about skills and a system?

I place my hand on the crystal ball. Nothing happens.

The receptionist looked shocked at the lack of reaction.

I guess it naturally reads people's magic power.

"That's impossible, it must be broken."

The receptionist places her own hand on the ball and a faint glow appears.

"Looks like it isn't broken, miss."

"B-but that's impossible, it should show your magic power!"

"Like I said, I don't have any magic power."

Nearby adventurers had started looking over.

"If you really can't use magic, I must recommend you quit applying. It can be very dangerous for people incapable of using magic to defend themselves."

"I'll be fine, I may not be able to use magic, but I trained my body well beyond its physical limits to the point where I was coughing blood. I did that every day and my current power is the result."

The receptionist didn't look satisfied at all, clearly assuming without magic I'd still be too weak no matter how physically strong I am.

"*sigh* Well I guess if you really won't give up you can go on through to the practical test, just don't blame me if you get killed."

I flash her a smile.

"I won't die that easily."

"Be in the courtyard in three hours that's when it'll start and good luck, sir."

I left the guild, now that I have three hours to kill, I should probably find some new clothes. Mine got torn up pretty bad whilst coming over the mountains.

I walk through the streets for a few minutes before coming to a shop with a pair of swords crossed over a suit of armour emblazoned on its sign. Most likely a blacksmith or an armourer.

I enter and exactly as I thought there was swords and armour lining the walls.

I walk up to the counter and ring a bell for service.

"I'll be out in a minute!"

A gruff voice came from the back of the shop before someone came out.

It was an old man over six feet tall with muscles bulging all over his body from working a forge. He had a bald head and thick greying beard.

"Right, what can I do ya for?"

"I'd like some armour, something that doesn't restrict movement but also provides a good enough protection to keep me from dying when I get hit."

The black smith ponders for a moment, before smiling.

"Yeah, I got something like that which should fit ya. Follow me into the back so you can try it on."

I followed him through a door into a backroom with armour on mannequins. We kept on walking until we stopped in front of one.

The piece consisted of a black leather chest piece worn over a linen undershirt with a hood to cover the face, leaving only the eyes visible. Along the arms was padded leather. A pair of black linen trousers was next to it with leather padding on the thighs and a pair of black leather boots, suitable for walking in.

Overall it seems easy enough to move in and should stave off the attacks from weaker enemies. It should do fine, the only issue is I don't know how much it's going to cost.

"It's good, how much'll it be."

The smith flashed a smile.

"Three gold pieces."

Three gold, that'll take away all my stolen funds.

"It's a bit expensive but I can't exactly go walking around in this torn up toga. I'll take it."

"Sure thing, I'll throw in a utility belt that can hold the stuff I your bag and that sword for ya, free of charge."

"Are you sure about that, Sir?"

"Ba don't call me sir, I work for a living. The name's Cheren Kovach."

The old man sticks out his hand for me to shake.

"Thank you, Cheren."

I put on my new armour and look in the mirror.

My pale blue eyes, blonde hair and light brown skin contrasting largely against the darker colours of the armour.

"You off to take the adventurers test?"

"Yes, I hope to become a hero who saves people like in the stories. The only issue is that doesn't pay so this'll have to do for funds."

"Aye, just don't go dying out there cause of faulty equipment, you need it servicing, you come to me."

"Don't worry, I'm tougher than I look."

I flash a smile before leaving and heading back towards the Guild hall.

I walk through the doors and wait the hour before the practical exam begins.
