It had been nine days since Yhwach awakened, and during those nine days, all he had done was walk around the village.
The villagers always looked at him as if he were a god, and he wasn't sure if he could disagree. He could feel the power within him. Back when he was bedridden, he could barely form a bow using his Reishi, but now conjuring hundreds was as simple as snapping his fingers. Controlling his power now came as easily as breathing.
"This village is a nice change of pace," Yhwach muttered to himself.
He was barefoot, standing in a field of flowers. He took a deep breath, a small smile on his face. Standing in this field was becoming a daily habit, and he couldn't blame himself for wanting to take things slowly. After being bedridden his whole life, now that he could do anything and go anywhere, he was determined to savor every moment in this new world.
"Unless some strong Soul Reaper finds me..." he murmured, his only worry in this peaceful life.
Yhwach was well aware of the existence of the Soul Reapers, or Shinigami as they were called in their homeland. They were the natural enemies of the Quincy, the very reason why the Quincy had almost gone extinct. Yhwach knew he was strong, but he lacked experience in combat. He couldn't rely solely on his newfound power.
*Bzzzt-*
Knowing this, he came to the same field of flowers every day to kill the monsters that wandered near the barrier he had accidentally conjured. In his hand, he wielded a massive blue sword made of burning Reishi. Despite its fiery appearance, it didn't harm the flowers nearby; in fact, it made them stand taller.
His sharp blue eyes scanned the area, locking onto an orc pacing around the barrier, seemingly trying to figure out how to get past it. Yhwach gripped his sword and, with a flick of his wrist, threw it like a spear at the orc.
The poor creature didn't even have time to react. In less than a second, the flames consumed its entire being, burning not only its body but also its very soul.
"That's another orc taken care of," Yhwach sighed. "I wonder why so many of these creatures try to approach the village."
As he pondered, he sensed something hiding behind one of the trees surrounding the field. He turned his head slightly and called out in a stern voice, "Come out, boy."
After a few moments, a blue-haired boy slowly emerged from behind the tree, his face a mix of fear and awe.
"Who are you, child?" Yhwach asked, his gaze unwavering.
The boy's Reishi was the weakest Yhwach had felt in the village—so weak, it was even lower than what Yhwach himself had when he was bedridden. The boy was as ordinary as they came.
"H-Himmel, Lord Yhwach!" the boy stammered.
"Alright, Himmel. Please drop the 'Lord' title. It's getting annoying hearing it all the time."
Yhwach was being honest. Every time he walked through the village, people greeted him as 'Lord Yhwach' or 'Great Spirit,' and he was starting to regret telling them his name.
"Tell me, Himmel, what are you doing here? It's dangerous for a boy like you to be this close to the barrier's edge."
Himmel looked down, too afraid to respond. Yhwach could see the boy's apprehension and offered a soft smile.
"It's alright, boy. It's good to be adventurous and carefree, but being close to danger isn't the same as being brave."
Himmel nodded timidly, then looked back at Yhwach. Seeing that the Great Spirit wasn't angry, he finally spoke up.
"I-I saw you walking towards the field every day. Normally, I would just nap under a tree, but since you've been coming here to fight monsters with your Mana, I couldn't stop watching!"
Himmel's voice grew more excited as he spoke, and Yhwach couldn't help but smile.
"So, you came here just to watch me?" Yhwach asked, amused.
"Yes, Lord Yhwach!" Himmel replied enthusiastically.
"Again, drop the 'Lord.'" Yhwach sighed, but before he could continue, he sensed something passing through the barrier. It wasn't a villager—the energy was unlike anything he'd encountered before.
Turning to his right, Yhwach spotted a dark-cloaked figure standing about ten feet tall. Its limbs were unnaturally long, and sharp, claw-like nails extended from its hands.
Himmel, who had been talking, noticed Yhwach's sudden focus. He followed Yhwach's gaze, and when he saw the figure, his face went pale with fear.
"D-Demon!" Himmel cried.
VMMMMMM-
In an instant, the demon lunged at Yhwach, its arm drawn back for a deadly swipe. Its speed left a trail of destruction, but Yhwach saw everything.
TAK-
With a simple motion, Yhwach blocked the demon's claws. The sharp nails barely scratched his skin, even without the use of *Blut*.
"Go home, boy," Yhwach ordered.
"B-But—" Himmel began, but Yhwach moved him back, narrowly saving him from the demon's next attack.
Skrrrrt-
Yhwach's boots screeched against the ground as he moved with inhuman speed. Himmel, unable to handle the sudden motion, vomited, while the demon grinned in twisted delight.
"Stay behind me, boy," Yhwach instructed, positioning himself between Himmel and the demon.
"Who sent you, demon?" Yhwach asked, his voice cold.
This was Yhwach's first time seeing a demon in this world, but he was no stranger to the concept. As a child, he had asked his father to buy him games for his 3DS, and he had been a big fan of the Zelda series.
"I see no reason to tell you, filthy spirit," the demon replied
Yhwach was surprised the demon responded at all.
"Oh, so you can talk. Isn't it rude not to introduce yourself?" Yhwach said, his tone calm.
"I could say the same about you," the demon sneered.
Yhwach didn't bother replying. Instead, he crouched low before dashing toward the demon, intent on ending the fight quickly. He didn't want Himmel to get hurt.
The demon saw Yhwach's attack coming and narrowly dodged his fist, but it couldn't avoid the explosion of Reishi that followed. The spiritual energy scorched the demon's skin, leaving it vulnerable.
The demon swiped at Yhwach with its claws, but Yhwach caught its arm with his left hand
Yhwach's right fist collided with the demon's body, sending it flying through the field with an explosion of Reishi. The air crackled as the energy from the impact scorched the earth around where the demon fell. The demon's body was mangled but it still managed to rise, snarling in anger and pain, its claws twitching in anticipation of another strike.
Himmel was trembling, his body unable to move after witnessing the sheer power of the two. Despite the terror, he couldn't tear his eyes away from Yhwach's back, the figure who stood before him, protecting him with the calm confidence of someone fully in control.
The demon, though injured, was far from giving up. It lurched forward, using its long limbs to cover the distance between them in mere moments. Its dark red eyes gleamed with bloodlust as it lunged again, faster this time, claws extended toward Yhwach's throat.
But Yhwach didn't flinch. His right hand glowed faintly as he reached into the air and conjured a massive, glowing blue bow made of pure Reishi. The bow materialized in his hand with ease, its radiant energy illuminating the field as he took aim.
"This ends now," Yhwach said softly, his voice calm yet filled with finality.
He drew the string of the spiritual bow back, forming an arrow of crackling Reishi energy. With a single motion, he released it. The arrow shot forward, blindingly fast and impossibly precise, cutting through the air with a high-pitched hum.
The demon barely had time to react before the arrow pierced through its chest, engulfing it in bright blue flames. The energy from the arrow not only destroyed the demon's physical form but also burned away its very essence. It let out a bone-chilling shriek as it disintegrated into nothingness, leaving no trace behind.
Yhwach lowered his bow, his stern eyes softening as he turned to Himmel, who was still frozen in place. The boy's face was pale, but his eyes were wide with awe.
"You can breathe now, Himmel," Yhwach said with a faint smile, the deadly seriousness from moments ago already fading from his features. "It's over."
Himmel collapsed to his knees, gasping for air as the weight of the situation finally caught up to him. He looked up at Yhwach, unable to find words for what he had just witnessed. His savior, this man who had calmly protected him and obliterated a terrifying demon, was more than the simple guardian the villagers spoke of. To Himmel, Yhwach truly seemed like a god.
"You… you saved me, Lord Yhwach," Himmel stammered, still shaking.
Yhwach extended a hand, helping the boy to his feet. "I told you to drop the 'Lord' part," he said gently. "And you should be more careful. I told you it was dangerous near the barrier."
Himmel nodded quickly, still in shock from the encounter. "I-I will! I promise!"
Yhwach turned his gaze back toward the horizon, sensing the lingering energy from where the demon had emerged. This was the first demon he had encountered, and while it had been no match for him, the fact that it had made it past his barrier was concerning
"We need to be cautious," Yhwach murmured, mostly to himself. "There may be more of them out there."
Himmel looked at Yhwach with wide eyes, unsure of what that meant for the village.
Yhwach nodded. "Yes. And next time, they may not be so easy to deal with." He glanced at Himmel. "Go home, and tell no one about what you saw here."
Himmel hesitated but nodded. "I'll keep it a secret, Lord Yh— I mean, Yhwach."
The boy hurried back toward the village, leaving Yhwach standing alone in the field. The flowers swayed gently in the breeze, unaffected by the battle that had just taken place.
Yhwach watched Himmel disappear into the distance before looking up at the sky, his expression thoughtful. The demon had called him a "filthy spirit," a term laced with contempt. It wasn't just an insult—it was a clue. There was more to this world than he had realized, and it seemed that forces were already beginning to take notice of his awakening.
Yhwach closed his eyes, feeling the power coursing through his veins, far greater than anything he had ever known in his previous life.
"Let them come," he whispered to himself, gripping his bow before dispersing it into particles of Reishi. "I will be ready."
Unbeknownst to Yhwach this encounter would forever change the future of this world.
