I had no idea what she meant by built-on love. My curiosity got the best of me, and I had to ask her.
She didn't speak for a while and I was ready to let the subject go. Until she sat next to me.
"He was number one, and I was number two. Always next to each other. That's how we got our names. I thought we'd live together forever. We fought, we laughed, we loved each other. This house," she waved to the house next to us, "…this was my gift to him. We made plans for the wedding and even the kids. But the day before I planned to tell him, he was killed."
Leo's voice cracked at the word "wedding" and was barely a whisper when she finished. Her eyes were blood red, her nose runny, teardrops slid down her face onto her clenched hands.
"A house built on love…" I muttered as I saw the house in a new light.
"A heartbroken house, you could say." She sniffles. "It happened a long time ago. It doesn't hurt as much as it did all those years ago."
