Chapter 1 - Curious

He sniffed the air. Listened to the crickets. Heard the loud thumps of a far away creature. A huge monster, one he was not ready nor equipped enough to hunt. His makeshift spear of sharpened stone and wood were not enough to pierce its hide. He was a hunter, yes, amoung the top of the food chain, possibly, but even he knew he was prey to most. In this Era, 9 out of 10 times he was prey. But these monsters, the real terrifying creatures, they seemed to be dying out. He would see one of those fur covered, four legs, with very sharp teeth and retractable claws and he won't see another one for months. When he finally did see some again, he could swear it was the same one he had seen before. There were few of them it seemed, but the weaker ones were plentiful. Who knows, soon his kind really would be at the top of the food chain.

He sniffed the air again. Long had he left his tribe. He preferred to hunt alone, but hunting alone was dangerous. Perhaps it was not so wise a decision, nonetheless he still left.

It was dark. He sniffed again. There was something auspicious about the air today. Something special was going to happen. He lifted his head to stare at the moon, and the little little lights that shown with it. Slowly he turned and headed towards the cave he made home.

He knew he should enter his cave and call it a night, but something stalled him. The same something that'd been making him feel different today. So he stayed, and waited, his back to the world, his face towards the caves entrance. And there he stood, until a deafening boom tore at his ears. A chunk of flame tearing through the air hurtling towards the earth. It flew over his cave and continued forth. It was huge. It was on fire. It continued on diving head first into the earth, tearing soil, felling and uprooting trees in its path until it stopped. All through out he stared at it. Marveled. When it made its stop everything that wasn't dead and with a little bit of sentience ran from it. They ran but he took a step forward. He was curious. And curiosity won. But vigilance whispered in his ears. Caution forever his friend. Slowly, he made his way towards the object of his curiosity.
