Chapter 4 - Position in the food chain

The meal was good, but not enough to satisfy the persistent craving in his stomach. So he hunted. A whole slew of corpses now lay at his feet. Enough animals that it piled a meter or more into the air. He made quick work of it though. He grabbed the pebble and gave it a long hard stare, trying almost to decipher all its secrets. The pebble was all that remained of the heaven stone which changed him. Quickly he grabbed some vines in the woods that surrounded his cave, tied one end around the pebble and the other around his neck, and just like that he had fashioned himself a necklace. The first of its kind, but he did not know that, he did not care actually, just the pebble.

He had had a good meal, normally all his time was spent hunting. He would set out in the morn, fill his stomach with fruits and hunt the rest of the day. If he was lucky, no if he hunted well, he would bring back some meat before the blazing ball of fire disappeared into the horizon, if not, he would fill his stomach that night with some more fruits.

So what now? Normally he had a tight schedule, mostly filled with hunting, now all he needed to do was expand the least bit of energy and viola, food is ready.

"roaa..."

A roar tore through the woods. He remembered what actually filled most of his time. It wasn't hunting, it was surviving. He had to survive. He was stronger now, by how much he didn't know. His position in the food chain was yet to be made clear. He needed to prepare. He needed a new home. Lately new... ideas have been popping into his head. The world looked different, could be different. He stared at the world with an entirely new lens.

He breathed in. Sniffed the air once more. It was becoming a habit now. He sniffed again because he noticed something. The scents in the air were different. They were plentiful, they were more differentiated and he could perceive more information from them. Like the scent of another prey a couple steps away, hiding underneath the bushes. He couldn't see it, but it was there, from the smell alone he knew what it was. Which prey it was. He smiled, more like grinned actually.

Thus he set off. Towards adventure, towards finding his position in the food chain, not even sparing the pitiful animal glance.
