I sat in my uncomfortable seat praying that time would speed up. I got my math work done and I just wanted to leave. Almost everyone in that class whispered to the person next to them. I just kept my eyes on the clock. Minutes felt too long. I don't have people I like in math, well I don't have many people in this school I like. I do have friends though.
Right when I take my heavy eyes off the clock the bell rings. I quickly pack up my stuff and people pour out of the classroom. The halls are packed with people. A lot of them are standing around talking to others, a few are rushing to their next class and a few are at their lockers.
 Â
I walk into my English class and I see Katie waving at me. I gave her a simple wave back, but it was more raising my hand then lowering down. I was ready to go home even if we haven't even had lunch yet. Lunch was after Science, which was after english.
 Â
Katie walks up to me.
"Maya," Katie whispers. "Luete will sit with us during lunch. She's one of Savanna's friends."
 Â
I give Katie a nod to let her know I heard her and she walks away. I've never met Luete before but I know the name somehow. I tried to pin-pont where but the irritating bell rang; letting people know that the period had started. We'll be getting our hyperbole quiz back. I looked over to Katie who was biting her thumb-nail. She most likely bombed the quiz due to the fact she is an airhead. She sleeps in a few classes so I need to give her the notes.
 Â
The teacher, Mrs. Jovean, got up from taking attendance and handed out the short 10-question quiz. I got a perfect score. I have too much free time to not study. I looked over at Katie; a smile was placed on her lips. The smile was one I knew quite well. It was her 'well I'm an idiot' smile.
 Â
Mrs. Jovean went on with the lesson, it was about connotation and the feelings of words. I was interested in this, english is my favorite subject, but Katie already hit the hay. I watched the slides pass by as they're projected on the whiteboard.
  Â
By the end of the class hour everyone is doing work they need to do. I, as always, got it done a little bit before most people in this class. Very few people pay attention to the teachers- which seems rude to me -but some people still do. Just before the bell rings I walk over to Katie, who is still sleeping. I smile and pinch her nose with my thumb and pointer finger. Her eyes shot open; it looked just like a cartoon. She frowned and I let go with a smile.
   Â
"The bell is going to ring soon," I informed her.
       Â
Just on que the bell rang and Katie stood up faster than light.
   Â
"Speak of the devil," I mumble before the two of us start walking out the room.
       Â
I don't have science with Katie but Jack is in my class. He and Katie aren't super similar; Jack likes learning but doesn't care about grades much. Katie, on the other hand, doesn't like this 'knowledge land' we live in. I keep my grades as high as possible just for personal satisfaction. We all became friends due to the school plays. Sure, they were in it and I only worked on the sets. I was on the painting crew and they helped when they had the time.       Â
When I walk into the semi-cluttered room Jack and I lock eyes with soft smiles. I took my seat, which happened to be right next to Jack.
"Did Katie fall asleep in class again?" Jack asked.
I nodded, "you guessed it. She also probably bombed the quiz."
"Bro. What am I supposed to do with her?" Jack joked, shaking his head.
       Â
We shared a laugh before the science teacher stood up and started his lesson. This unit on pollution and how it affects the economy. By the time the teacher got done ranting about pollution and the effects the bell was about to ring, and we would head off to lunch. Luete was not in any of my classes so I wonder what she's like. I hope she can hold a conversation; I'm not the best at breaking the ice. Right when the bell rang I started panicking a tiny bit. I really hope I don't piss her off.
I need to pull myself together. I thought to myself as I got to my locker to get my lunch.
Katie runs up to Jack, startling him. His locker is right next to mine due to our last names: Lewis (mine) and Leveor (Jack's). In one swoop: I grab my lunch and the three of us on our way to the cafeteria. As soon as I open the large wooden doors I scan the room for Savanna.
She isn't like Katie, Jack or me; she has a lot of friends and plays a lot of sports. I go to a lot of her games, excpt her softball games. Her softball games are on Thursdays and the one day I week I'm busy.
