Chapter 21 - Frenemies

We received a new kid at the asylum today. They had announced her name and age during socializing time as they did with every new victim.

Her guardian pointed her to a table next to us. She walked with her head down and silently sat at the table.

While the kids became disinterested immediately, I became even more interested in her as time went by.

Her teammates tried to engage her but she simply nodded or shook her head. Until they got tired of her and let her be.

There was something off about her and it didn't sit well with me. I could see a green aura surrounding her, and I didn't know what it meant.

My powers were only limited to fire and telekinesis. I had never seen someone's aura before me, so it made me suspect if she also happened to have strange powers like me.

I wanted to interrogate her but it wasn't like I could just leave the table of my own accord and walk up to her. The guardians would have me down the minute I got up from the seat.

I was getting antsy by the second. Sierra was a puzzle that I wanted to figure out as soon as possible.

The opportunity came when my guardian came to get me. Sierra was seated a few seats away from me, so we would have to pass her to get to the main door.

I staggered around, grabbing my guardian's arm for support. She looked at me in disgust but didn't remove my arm. I mentally rolled my eyes at her but directed my attention towards Sierra.

We were almost there and my staggering act was working. As soon as I was right behind Sierra, I collapsed.

It wasn't that difficult. All I had to do was lower my body temperature to an extreme point for a few seconds. My body convulsed on the ground as shivers went through me.

But my eyes were alert as I saw Sierra's terrified face hovering above me. Then, all of a sudden, her voice was in my head, 'I know what you're doing.'

I was right. Sierra had powers like me. My body temperature returned to normal and the convulsions stopped. Slowly, I stood up. My legs felt like jelly, but I ignored them.

I also ignored all the people hovering around me like bees, focusing only on Sierra. She was standing to the side, watching me with a cool gaze.

My plan had been to force Sierra to show her powers somehow. If she did have powers like me, she would've been able to reverse my temperature within seconds.

While my plan didn't work exactly as I'd wanted, I did get the confirmation of Sierra's powers.

My guardian grabbed my arm and pulled me away from the room. I didn't remove my gaze from Sierra's until I was forced out of the room.

My mind was a mess. I couldn't decide if this was a good or a bad thing. I could use her powers to escape from here. But I got the impression that she wasn't eager to get out of here like I was.

That troubled me. Another thing that bothered me was that I couldn't read her mind. I had tried to when I had collapsed. My hand briefly brushed against her, but all I got was an illusionary wall.

In my weakened state, it had been near impossible to get past it. Her powers were strong. She was my enemy, for now.

I was pushed into one of the examination rooms. My guardian forced me to sit on the chair. There were almost ten or more injections attached to the machine at several points.

It always gave me the creeps. But I tried to remain steady as the injections pierced my skin at varying points.

Something warm filled me up. It felt like it was burning up my insides. My vision flashed red and there was a constant ringing in my ears.

I could hear my heartbeat as it quickened.
