Chapter 43 - Since you wanna act like you're so hardworking

The Next Day Morning,

Anne woke up yawning with her mouth wide open like a cute baby who just had a goodnight sleep. She lazily sat down on the mat and did a little stretch. Her eyes wandered around the room and she saw that Victoria and Clara were still fast asleep. She also saw that Carl wasn't in the room and she mentally scoffed.

"He left? Why am I not surprised? I knew he couldn't keep up living here." Anne muttered

She got outside of the house and to her surprise, she saw Carl clearing the haystack on the dairy farm with a rake. The dairy farm looked cleaner than usual thanks to Carl's hard work.

Anne frowned as soon as she saw Carl. She wasn't just angry that he was still around, she was angry that he was doing a job nobody asked him to do.

Anne angrily marched to where Carl was and grabbed the rake from his hands.

Carl gasped. He was shocked and surprise at what just happened, wondering why Anne did that.

"No one asked you to help us clean our farm," Anne said rudely to him.

"I was only trying to help" Carl said.

"I told you, you're not welcome here! Why are you still here?" Anne said in a husky tone.

"It's obvious you're very happy I'm here else, I wouldn't be the first person you'll be talking to as soon as you woke up. It seems you've been dreaming about me" Carl said and gave Anne a flirtatious wink that pissed Anne even more.

"You think you're so cute" Anne scoffed.

"You know what? Since you wanna act like you're so hardworking, how about you clean the entire farm? You'll also have to feed all the chickens and collect their eggs too... And that's not all," Anne smirked.

"you're going to feed all the cows and extract their milk too," She said in a bossy manner.

She handed Carl the rake. "Here! You can finish up with clearing and arranging the hays"

Carl looked around the farm. He had already imagined how stressful it was going to be, working on the farm but he had no intention of backing out.

"If you do exactly as you're told, I MIGHT as well forgive you for lying to me and covering up for Carlos?" Anne said and she walked out.

"She acts like she's some goddess" Carl chuckled within himself as he starts raking the hays.

A few minutes later, Victoria and Clara came outside the house and they both saw Carl feeding the chickens.

"How long has Carl been doing that?" Victoria said to herself smiling at his hard work.

Carl seemed to be doing a good job even though it was his first time doing such work. Thanks to some videos he has watched in the past, he has an idea of what he was doing.

Victoria and Clara walked toward him.

"Good morning Carl you shouldn't be doing this. Cleaning this farm is meant for Anne and I. You're our guest and I'm supposed to make you comfortable..." Victoria said and Carl cuts in

"Please, let me. I'm almost done. I'm literally having fun doing all of this" he said with a smile.

"I'm sure Anne must've forced you to do all of this. Where is that little brat?!?" Victoria said in a high-pitched tone searching around to see Anne.

"No, Anne didn't force me. I told you I'm having fun doing this." Carl insisted.

Anne thought it was a punishment for Carl but Carl was totally enjoying what he was doing.

"Alright, if you say so. I'm going to see a friend, I'll be back at noon. If you're hungry ask Anne to prepare something for you." Victoria said and left.

'Anne, prepare something for me to eat?? I'm totally screwed,' Carl thought to himself. He knew that Anne wouldn't want to cook for him to make him suffer.

"Carl, can I help you please?" Clara said to Carl in a soft tone that sounded so sweet to the hearing.

"Thanks but no thanks… you're too young for this" Carl said.

"Pleassee… I just wanna help" Clara pouted with pleading arms. She looked so cute that Carl couldn't afford to say no to her.

"Alright, alright." He laughed. "Okay, let's go milk the cows"

Meanwhile, in New York City….

It was Dexter's first day of work and he was super excited and nervous at the same time.

He was on a white buttoned-down long-sleeve shirt and a black tie that matched the black trousers he was putting on. His shoes were well polished and his hair was well arranged like he took his time to brush it.

Dexter was with his CV which was already packaged inside a file. He could be seen walking into the NYPD company smiling and greeting everyone that walked passed him.

He got into the elevator to the 12th floor which took him to the hallway. Dexter was now standing at the door of the staffroom also known as the workroom where cops and detectives were making a whole lot of noise.

Anyone could tell that Dexter was a newbie because of how lost he looked.

However, A very young lady who noticed Dexter standing at the door walked towards him. She's a beautiful blonde reporter who was corporately dressed.

"Hi, I'm Audrey. How may I help you?" she said politely to Dexter with a sweet smile on her face, stretching forth her hand to shake him.

"I'm Dexter," he said returning the handshake, smiling back at her.

Dexter was amazed by how friendly Audrey was because of her manner of approach. She looked too pretty to be nice.

'it seems everyone here are nice people' Dexter thought.

"I'm looking for detective Noah." He said.

"Detective Noah! Your attention is needed here!!" Audrey voiced out to get Noah's attention.

"What is it, this time!!" Noah grumbled loudly.

Noah is a simple, witty, and funny man who is Carl's right-hand man especially when it comes to criminal investigation because he is very skilled at his job. He recently got hired to work at NYPD but he's already popular amongst all the employees.

Noah is in his late forties yet agile like he's in his twenties. He's a very good-looking man with a nice jawline that suits his beard.

"Prosecutor Carl hired me and he told me to meet you to teach me how to proceed with my job as a detective here," Dexter said to Noah.

There was a minute of silence that if a pen should fall on the floor, it was going to echo loudly.

Suddenly, there was a huge laughter that burst out in the staffroom. Everyone, especially Noah was laughing at Dexter apart from Audrey who rolled her eyes in disgust at their behavior.

Dexter felt like he could pee in his pants due to embarrassment and he wondered what he had said wrong.

Noah finally stopped laughing and started rubbing his eyes because he was already tearing up due to how hard he laughed.

"Did I say something wrong?" Dexter said trying his best to stay confident.

Noah walked toward Dexter and held his shoulder.

"Listen, kid, it appears you're lost and I could tell someone to escort you back to the playground," Noah said with a straight face, and Dexter was confused at what he just said.

"...This is the New York Police Department company where ADULTS like us work, not some toy store for kids okay?? Now run along" he said, gesturing his hands for Dexter to leave.

"No!" Dexter responded instantly with a high-pitched voice.

"I mean... Detective Noah, prosecutor Carl actually employed me to be a detective here. Here take a look at my CV," he handed his documents to Noah.

Noah sighed in disbelief and he decided to flip through Dexter's CV. He saw that Dexter was more than qualified to be a detective based on his good results in criminal investigation. He pretended not to be impressed by Dexter's performance and he handed the CV back to Dexter.

"Kid, this doesn't prove anything. You might be good at theories but what makes you think you can be a professional detective like me." Noah said sternly with his hands in his pockets.

"Because I have what it takes, I'm bold and smart. And I may not have any experience but I guarantee to do a better job than what you expect" he replied with so much courage, and Audrey couldn't help but smile.

"Wow, Noah, I think this kid got potential," a cop said from the back.

"Shut up Bryan!!" Noah yelled at him.

"There's absolutely no way prosecutor Carl is going to employ a teenager as a detective." He said

"Sir, I have proof. I emailed prosecutor Carl my resumé and he approved it." Dexter said.

"I'm going to call prosecutor Carl and ask him myself." Noah brought out his phone and called Carl but his number was unavailable.

He tried it over and over again but it was still unavailable.

"What's happening? it's past 9 o'clock in the morning and prosecutor Carl isn't at work. This is unlike him" Noah muttered to himself.

"What's your name kid?" He said out to Dexter.

"My name is Dexter Robyn Stewart" Dexter responded.

"How old are you?" Noah asked him

"I'll be turning 22 very soon," he answered.

"See what I mean? He's too young to be in this game" Noah turned to face his co-workers

"C'mon detective Noah, I'm 22 already and I started working here a year ago," Audrey said.

"Sweetie, you're just a reporter. I'm talking about real profession here" Noah said to Audrey mockingly.

"You're just jealous because you're old and you weren't lucky enough to graduate from college at an early age," Audrey responded harshly to him.

She walked to her seat and started typing on her laptop.

Almost all the workers laughed at Noah silently but it still got to Noah's ears that made him feel defeated.

Meanwhile, Dexter tried his best to hold in his smile feeling thankful to Audrey who stood up for him.

"Children of nowadays!!" Noah scoffed.

"Alright... Desktop or Dexter whatever your name is, just hang in here in the meantime." Noah said to Dexter.

"Thank you, Sir!" he said.

Dexter looked around, wondering where he could sit. He saw a free seat near Audrey and he decided to sit near her.

"Thank you," he whispered to Audrey with a smile on his face and Audrey smiled back.
