The Test
The birds around the cafe stop chirping, so does the air drop low. But the tension inside the fully air-conditioned cafe raised the temperature, it seemed odd to feel sweaty.
Adrianna perspired as she was surrounded with bulky men in the space. When one of the investors molested her and got her fired without getting a penny for which she worked so hard, she got frustrated and slapped the man out of it. She realised what she had done but it was too late and the man already charged himself on her. However, before he could hurt her by hitting her with his hands, someone barged in time and grabbed the man's arm, pushing him away from her.
Adrianna was shocked when the investor was thrown a few meters away, so were others.
Her eyes landed on the man in front of her who was well dressed with a suit and tie. His hair was long and fell backward to his shoulder. He had a sharp nose and thin lips but he looked handsome.
"No matter what, a gentleman was raised not to raise his hand on a hand, and those who raise his hands on a woman, he wasn't a man either." Said the man in suit.
"Hey, you!!! Who are you and what are you doing here? Get out, go to my cafe?" Spencer yelled at the man and an assistant barged in.
"Mr. Spencer! If I was at your place, I wouldn't have talked to Mr Black that way." The assistant pointed out and Spencer's eyes widened in fear. his face turned pale, losing all colours.
"Mr. Black? Forgive me, my lord." Spencer fell to his feet and the man in suit stepped back.
"Mr. Spencer, please don't embarrass me and take your cue to leave this place. I am the owner of this property and on my place, i will not tolerate any discrimination, racism and violence… you should have known that. And I have changed my mind about selling this property. I cancel this meeting and I will make sure that all these men will be behind the bars for molesting a woman under your supervision, Mr Spencer. And remember, this is not the end." Mr Black glared daggers at Spencer.
The bodyguards arrived and dragged the men out of the cafe and Spencer was fired for his behaviour.
After confronting the whole staff, Mr Black found out that Spencer was humiliating them.
"I will take care of him… now I need a new manager." He stated.
"I will publish advertisements in papers.." the assistant suggested but Mr Black waved his hands.
"I need one now." He declared and turned to glance at Adrianna.
His eyes sparkled when he saw Adrianna standing at the corner and gestured to her to come forward.
"What's your name?" He asked.
"Adrianna Cosgrove…" she replied to him but kept her head a bit low in respect as the man had some power radiating through his veins.
"Would you like to become the new manager?" Mr Black asked her.
Adrianna's eyes widened and she looked up to face the man. She was still confused if what she heard was true or if it was a misunderstanding?
"Sorry?"
"Alright, I made you the Manager of this place." Mr Black declared
"No, you made a mistake…" said Adrianna in a rush but when the man glared at her, she was hesitant to speak again.
"What do you mean I made a mistake?" He scrunched his brows and narrowed his gaze on her.
"You haven't seen my resume and my experience as a manager yet. I was trying to say that, you should at least look for an eligible candidate for the job." Adrianna hurriedly explained and waited for his response.
"I think you are right, I shall take your interview. Let's go…" Mr Black started out of the box and Adrianna was left speechless.
when she spotted Me Black leaving, she stopped him and asked, "Mr Black, the office is on the right side."
He turned back and smiled at her, suddenly put his hand on her waist, and Adrianna felt uncomfortable.
"We are not interviewing you here." There was a smirk on his face as he guided Adrianna out of the cafe.
She was taken inside the big shiny black car which screamed luxury. Mr Black was wealthy, no doubt but he was a show starter, it was new for her.
"We are heading to my hotel where you will be comfortable and we will be able to interview well." Mr Black notified her.
"Mr Black, you could have taken the interview in the cafe. And I only worked part time there. I don't know why you chose me." Said Adrianna.
Mr. Black squinted his eyes at her but smirked in a wicked way.
He was an attractive man and knew how to use his charm. Then he held her hand firmly and replied, "it's okay, Miss Cosgrove. I think we should know a few things about each other. This interview is just a formality. I was taking you on a date with me. I know how to help girls like you."
Adrianna snatched her hands back and asked to stop the car, "stop it… stop the car or i will jump out."
The driver applies brakes to the car and stopped it in the middle of the highway. Adrianna left the vehicle and turned her heels to leave the place.
Mr Black left the car and followed Adrianna to stop her.
"You cannot leave like this…"
"I can and no one can stop me. Mr Black, you are my boss and I respect that fact but you cannot forcefully take me anywhere you want. Yes, I need a stable job rather than a part time one but not at the cost of my dignity. I could have slept with many if I wanted to get money this way but my morals and principles are above anything. I will eat less but all I will eat would be the share of my hard work. I don't need your money and your job, you can have them."
Adrianna yelled at the man and was about to leave when the man stood next to her and grabbed her arm.
"I am sorry, Miss Cosgrove but my act was not to hurt your sentiments. It was a test that you passed." Said the man.
"Huh?" Adrianna was confused.
"Yes, a test. I wanted a worthy person for my property and it was my way to find out the worth. I am glad that I chose you, Miss Cosgrove. Congratulations for your job as the manager."
Adrianna's eyes were filled with tears of joy and she was more than happy.
"Thank you, sir."
"Don't call me sir, call me Jordan. It's my name." He patted her shoulders and left in his car.
Adrianna was above the cloud nine as she got the job and it was the best day of her life.
Inside the car, the assistant asked Jordan Black about the job proposal.
"Sir, why did you…"
"Shh… let her be happy… to cage a bird, you need to feed her…" there was a smug plastered to the Man's face.
