Moments like these were moments Ifeoma wished would never end. Being nearly close to Obi whislt inhaling his cologne were rare moments she wished would never end.
Going for a checkup Obi as usual offered to take her. Yesterday he had asked if she would want to assertain the sex of their baby. She had said no, not like she wasn't curious. She just wasn't desperate. Children are a gift from God, she would be happy to have with any gender God decides to bless them with.
"Damn!" Obi had cursed as they were confronted with traffic.
Ifeoma was shaken a little by the outburst but she comported herself immediately. Obi's occasional outburst was nothing new to her. He was amongst those that could go on destroying sphere when angry. She had witnessed it first-hand on the morning after they had sex. He had destroyed almost everything in his room. Thank God aunty Nina stopped him before he could injure himself more.
Aunty Nina was like the only one Obi was nice to. In the office everyone knew to comport themselves around him. The fear of Obi outburst was the beginning of not keeping your ass kicked off.
Ifeoma enjoyed the traffic not because she loved it rather because the live of her life was here with him smelling like someone spice missed with lavender fragrance. She could smell the fragrance all day without getting nauseated.
"If you're curious we could check the sex of the baby" Ifeoma said to start a conversation.
"Of course not. You said you didn't and that's cool by me" he said without as much as looking her side.
Ifeoma was disatisfued she wanted them to fight or argue like normal couples; they aren't normal. Their marriage was a mistake.
"Was just saying" she said almost inaudibly. Ifeoma looked out the window and saw some little teenagers selling different commodities on the traffic. She wondered why they weren't in school. She wind down and called a girl selling cooked groundnuts. The girl was black, slender and beautiful with sharp cheek bones. She would make a great model Ifeoma thought.
" Nye mu testing, give me some to taste" the ground seller gave Ifeoma some to taste. It was a normal thing to taste groundnuts before buying. "Give me two hundred naira own" Ifeoma said to the girl.
The groundnut seller brought a tin and filled it with groundnuts twice and handed it over to Ifeoma. Ifeoma brought one thousand naira note from her purse and gave to the girl.
"Aunty change adiro kwa, there is no change, you're my first customer" the girl said.
"Don't worry keep the change" Ifeoma said smiling.
"Aha aunty dalu, thank you, Chukwu gozie gi, God bless you" the girl said happily as she left to continue searching for other customers. Moments like these whence there's traffic are moments they sell best since people would be devastated and would want for small chops to distract them whilst they wait.
"Have some" Ifeoma said to the man who has just silently watched as she bought the groundnuts.
"Thank you, I don't want."
"I incisit" Ifeoma said as she pushed the groundnuts over to his laps.
"I said no!" Obi said he a croaky tone.
Ifeoma was thrown aback. She only asked him to eat groundnuts why was he yelling she thought to herself. Ifeoma could feel tears kiss her cheeks as she took the groundnuts away. She wasn't a cry baby but since she got pregnant she noticed that trivial things gets her tearing up. She was pregnant for Christ sake she has every right to cry she told herself as she met zero attempt to wipe her tears.
"I'm sorry" Obi pauses "I didn't mean to yell" Obi said.
Ifeoma didn't respond. She didn't want to talk this mean man who has zero knowledge on how to treat a pregnant woman. Since he wanted silence she planned to leave him the hell alone. So many emotions were building inside her and she didn't trust herself to talk. She might just say too much, say things overboard or fill the car with her tears. She do rather keep silent as her tears kisses her face willy and freely.
