Chapter 9 - An Explosive Scene

Despite how amazing being a hunter sounds like in your mind, in reality, it is a very frustrating and tiresome job.

"Hiyyaah!" Ray gritted his teeth and let out a loud grunt as he shot lightning bolts out of his fingertips, which zoomed through the air with incredible speed and collided with the body of the higher troll.

Zap! Zap! Zap!

"GRAAAR!"

The loud and pain filled roar of the monster reverberated through the air as Ray continued his repetitive attacks without wasting a single moment.

And that was the technique that made it both accessible and frustrating to hunters; Repetitive attacks and fast reflexive actions to evade the counterattacks.

Although this might be the most basic and least clever method to defeat a monster, the fact that it was so simple and quick to understand made it so that the complete mastery of this technique as well as an understanding of the enemy would ensure the victory of even a simple normal level hunter.

Of course, just because it was simple and basic didn't mean that the technique was easy. It just meant that it was possible for almost anyone to utilize this technique,

But even then, it wasn't as though the technique had no flaws. There were certainly times when the creature they're fighting, if intelligent enough, would figure out the pattern behind the repetitiveness, and would wait for a chance to break the flow and catch the hunter off guard before killing them. It didn't happen too often, as most monsters were simple minded, but that didn't mean that it couldn't happen.

At the end of the day, the method to attain victory against a monster depended on the abilities, skills and intelligence of the hunter. The higher the rank, the more versatility the hunter had in choosing a way to defeat their opponents. But most hunters are not high ranked nor do they possess a monstrous talent. Most hunters are average ranked with a normal skillset, and that was why this repetitive technique was one of the most popular methods used by hunters. Not because of its specialty, but because of its accessibility.

Zap! Zap! Zap!

Ray continued to shoot out lightning from his hands as he rushed through the smoke and in between the higher troll's legs, targeting its weak parts to further reduce the usage of mana energy, and the creature continued to scream and attack Ray to no avail.

"GRAAAAAAAAR!"

All of a sudden, a roar that was louder than all the roars before exited the throat of the troll monster, causing even the smoke clouds to be pushed back as a result of the fast moving air from its mouth.

"Shit! It's that time already?" Ray, who had noticed the sudden change in behavior of the higher troll, bit his lips in frustration before taking a few leaps back, increasing the distance between him and his opponent. He then took out his laser pistol and a specialized grenade and waited.

WHIZZZZ!

Ray watched multiple beams of dark energy manifested near the higher troll's hands, which quickly shot forward, in the direction of Ray as the creature swung its fist with incredible strength.

Swoosh!

At the same time as when the dark energy beams manifested, Ray clicked the button on the specialized grenade and threw it underneath them, and it exploded with a loud bang just as the dark energy beams zoomed through the air.

"GRRRAAAR!"

The higher troll winced in pain as its hand that was stretched out forward had been engulfed in flames.

BOOM!

The large explosion took out a few of the dark energy beams, and the rest of them continued on their initial trajectory, aiming straight for Ray who instantly pulled the trigger on his laser pistol, taking out another six of them.

BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM!

The six shots weren't enough to take down all of the dark energy beams, and the remaining three instantly closed the distance between them, forcing Ray to turn around and rush back towards the direction he came from, where the boulder he hid behind was located.

Swoosh!

As the beams continued to close the distance between them, lessening the distance little by little, Ray quickly rushed over to the large boulder and leapt onto it, doing a backflip right as the dark beams slammed into the rocks, reducing the large structure into nothing more than dust and debris.

"GRRARR!" The troll monster screamed again, this time opening its mouth wide, and Ray could see that the inside of its throat was starting to glow red.

"Oh no you don't!" Ray, who was charging towards the higher troll monster as this was happening, didn't waste any time and swung the specialized grenade into its mouth before it could shoot out whatever it was supposed to.

Zoom!

The grenade zoomed through the air and passed through the throat of the monster before it had any chance to react, disappearing from Ray's view as the monster took a step back, possibly due to being caught off guard by the projectile that it just swallowed, and at that moment.

"GRRRRR…. GRRRRR…. GRRR…."

The higher troll monster began to wobble as its roars slowly started to lose its volume, becoming more like murmurs, and its stomach began to bulge outwards, deforming its body as faint yellow threads of light could be seen through its belly skin.

"..... GRRRR….. GRRRAAAR!"

The troll monster finally let out a loud enough roar in the end, but right then, countless strands of electric currents burst out through its mouth and its deformed stomach as the creature exploded like a balloon, and Ray covered his face and instinctively took a few steps back, watching the destruction happen from a safe distance.

Spat! Splat! Splat!

Chunks of flesh and bones dropped right and left of Ray, who calmly took one or two steps back in response to the carnage. Despite the violent and grotesque scene in front of him, Ray's gaze was focused on the bright blue light that was shining from within a large chunk of flesh.

Tap, tap, tap…

His gaze concentrated on the shining blue light, Ray slowly moved forward, his steps careful and cautious as though he was walking towards something fragile.

Splat!

Ray stabbed his hand into the flesh and pulled out what appeared to be a blue gem-like object, and a faint smile appeared on his face. "Found you."
