Chapter 21: Do You Want Power?
In the midst of Skye's confusion, one of the Sting Pincer Bugs took the chance to lunge at him.
While its open mouth filled with dangerous gastric fluids was inches away from Skye's position, ready to spew out poisonous saliva, a sniper was suddenly pointed at its face.
Bang!
A bullet pierced its eye as the creature screamed in agony.
'Who the hell are you? Wherever the hell you are, COME THE FUCK OUT!' Skye's thought was filled with rage, but his eyes had a strange and eerie calmness in them.
'Do you want power?' The voice in his head asked a question that he didn't see coming.
'What?' Skye's tone was filled with confusion.
'I said, DO YOU WANT POWER?' The voice sounded again.
Skye's body shook.
He looked at the creatures around him and the female demon like creature leading them, and his heart suddenly went calm, in contrast to his surroundings.
'What do you want in exchange for giving me this so-called power?' Skye's icy voice sounded in the recesses of his head.
'Ooh! Right to the point eh, are we? What do I want, hmm, what do I want? How about your soul?' The voice sounded with a chuckle like sound, causing Skye to feel annoyed by it.
But Skye also felt slightly awed of the voice. It couldn't be helped though, the fear of the unknown certainly played a big part. After all, the ability to casually speak from another location coupled with the strength to casually kill these beasts, required the power of an Epic level mage at the very least.
And Skye was sure that he would never have the chance to come in contact with beings of such power, for he was still too weak.
At least, for now.
So he had to play along, at least find out this person's intentions first.
'Even if you can grant me such power, how can I know that I can trust you? In fact, why should I trust you? What's the catch for this power of yours? And why should I sell myself as a slave to your will for such power? I'm pretty sure I can take care of these—' Skye spoke, then paused for a bit.
He glanced at the demon and beasts with a slight look of condescension in his eyes.
'Things. I know my power. I know I'm going to win.' He finished his sentence.
'Oh. I'm sure you will.' The voice sounded, almost gloating.
'I'm sure you're going to die. Who do you think you are huh? What makes you think you're so special? What power do you think you have? You're nothing but a trashy brat with stupid delusions of power. And that power of yours? Are you talking about your Spirit Body? I saw that coming from a mile away. What makes you think that you can win when you can't even harness its power? Pathetic? I thought you were smarter than this.' The voice sounded angry and mocking, but Skye had a feeling that it was neither of the two.
Skye was shocked. His mind had a myriad of thoughts running through it. 'How the hell does this guy know about my Spirit Body? Who is he?'
Skye forced himself to remain calm and not tremble when communicating with this unknown entity.
'I don't know.' Skye paused and then he continued, 'but what I do know, is that I'm not going to give up in this fight. I came here to push through my limits, and I'm not going to stop now.' Skye thought calmly.
'Spoken like a true naive idiot. Which I'm sure you're not. So tell me, now that you've ''seen" these beasts up close, tell me what you really feel.' The voice said in his head, silght contempt in its tone.
Skye thought for a moment.
'Sigh. You asked a question. And I am going to give you an answer.' His voice resounded in his head. It was a strange and novel feeling for him. It gave him a weird vibe, but didn't bother him much.
'Oh. What answer?' The voice had a gleeful tone to it. It made Skye want to look at the voice with a weird face and ask him if all he came here to do was gloat.
'I don't just want power.' Skye paused.
'Oh?' The voice asked.
Skye took in a deep breath.
"I WANT ABSOLUTE POWER!" Skye suddenly roared towards the skies. Or rather, the walls above his head, scaring the bug like creatures and causing the demon like female to look at him with surprise and bloodlust.
Skye's voice resounded throughout the entire space.
If the voice also had a face, it too, would look at Skye in surprise.
"Mere power isn't enough. Not for me." Skye. began to speak. As he did, an unfathomable aura slowly began to seep out his body, permeating the entire area.
The insectoids gritted their teeth, that is if they did have teeth, and lunged at Skye like bullets out of a gun.
They continued to chatter noisily.
Skye continued to release a pressuring aura that seemed to stimulate the demon's battles senses as it joined its "henchmen" to attack Skye.
In the midst of the dangerous looking creatures that surrounded him, Skye showed not an ounce of fear. Instead, he continued to glare at them with a ferocious gleam in his eyes.
While his actions would seem as the reckless attempt of a bravado that seemed to have took a few steroids to anyone watching, the voice quietly said with a faint amount of astonishment in its tone.
"To think that he would grow up so quickly in such a short amount of time, damn! I barely slept for a few years! The Soul is awakening, the time is drawing closer and closer. I wonder... can he handle it?..."
Meanwhile Skye faced off against a demon and a bunch of insects. He stood before them while his body emanated an ominous pressure. His eyes began to glow in a reddish-golden tint.
"Hey kid! You should probably take your emotions down a notch and listen to me. I thought you were an emotionless freak. My oh my, how things can change.
Look. You want power so badly, yet you can't seem to see the limitless amount of power that you possess in this puny body of yours. For that reason, both your body and mind are failing to keep up with the explosive state of the vast energies within you. Keep this up, and you'll certainly die in less than a minute from now. The only thing I can't fathom is why this eruption of the Chaos energy within you is happening, much less at this time. This was out of my expectations. Do you wanna know the reason why you can't seem to even grasp the first level of the Primordial Chaos Qi Scripture?" The voice mused and said to Skye, with a faint teasing expression in its tone.
Skye was shocked.
He quickly put together pieces of the statement and asked anxiously.
"How—long—have you—been following me?" He said with a dark voice.
"Look at you, so anxious. Do you really wanna know?" The voice still had that same teasing tone in it that made Skye so particularly annoyed.
"HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WATCHING ME‽" He roared.
There was a faint pause, and then the voice spoke.
"For as long as you've been born." A dark and chilly voice rang in Skye's head.
"Do not get the silly delusion that you and I are equals. Never raise your voice at me again." The voice's tone shook Skye's heart and he almost involuntarily nodded.
But even Skye did not expect that the following words would come out of his mouth.
"How dare you speak to me like that! Who the hell do you think you are huh? You think that because you're some kind of bigshot, you have a total say in what goes on in my life? When I was at my lowest, the most painful part of my life, where the fuck were you huh? How dare you prance around on your high horse and come to control my life?! No one in this world can trample on my pride. Not even you. I never asked for your help anyway. If you have nothing better to say...
GET THE FUCKING HELL OUT OF MY HEAD!"
His shout shook the area and further drove the creatures into a path of frenzied bloodlust.
Skye sooner realized the impact of what he had said, but chose to ignore it. Even if he was going to die, he'd rather die at the hands of a powerful being than a bunch of monsters behind a Gate.
At least, it'd be something to brag about to Layla when I meet her on the other side. He thought blankly as he silently waited for his death.
But all he got was a mirthful chuckle.
"I see, you've—really grown up. I never would have imagined...Though it was to be expected. At least, I'm assured, you'll be able to control the power of Chaos, even if it is for a short while. Your Will has begun to take shape." The voice sounded cheerful.
"What—is going on? I thought you were going to kill me?" Skye asked in confusion.
"Now why would I do that? In fact, why don't I give you a give, more accurately, a chance to peer into the secrets of the universe."
"Huh‽" Skye was lost.
"Remember to cherish this chance. This is all it might need to change your story forever." The. voice said mysteriously.
Skye's body began to jolt and shake, while an immense pain began to fill his entire body. He let out blood curdling screams and cries of helpless agony as faint lines began to surface under his skin.
While in the depths of his icy blue pupils, an image flashed.
More accurately, a memory flashed.
The memories of what happened on the day of what seemed to be the beginning of a story.
The story of the Bloody Skull.
The day of his first Tier 1 dungeon run.
The day that caused Layla's death.
The golden book in the depths of his soul seemed to release a faint glow, as vague words began to take shape.
