SPARROW POV
THE NEXT MORNING
Just like everyone else she wasn't here to see the first fall of snow with me. I'm sure that she was somewhere out there hanging out with her rich friends.
I always questioned my existence at a young age and sometimes I thought that I was adopted but it turns out that all my assumptions were all wrong and nothing made sense anymore.
Didn't I have a father to run to? If my own mother didn't love me the least she could do was send me to my father.
I'd stay with him even though we were just strangers.
Today was the day I was going to ask her about my father. I wanted to know who he was and where I could find him.
Surprisingly I found Amber at home. She was going through some documents in the living room while sipping a glass of wine and as usual Brandon was out of the house.
"Who is my father?"
She looked up and stared at me in disbelief.
"What?"
I crossed my arms over my chest.
"You heard what I said, if Brandon is not my biological father then who is my real father?"
She stood up and placed her glass of wine on the table.
She walked towards me and stared at me.
"Sparrow."
Before I could open my mouth to utter a second word she slapped me across the face.
Hard.
I could feel the sting from my right cheek.
I let out a gasp and held my sore cheek.
My eyes widened in shock and tears threatened to spill down my cheeks.
"You will never mention anything about your real father. Do I make myself clear?"
"If you need a father so desperately just ask Brandon to play the role for you."
Tears silently spilled down my cheeks.
And I felt the pent up anger I've been holding for years all coming back to me and it was because of this woman who called herself my mother.
"Why do you hate me so much? I thought you were my mother? Mother's are supposed to love their own children."
She chuckled softly.
"Where did you get this nonsense from? I'm sure that it's all from those stupid movies you're always watching."
"What did I ever do to you? If you hate me this much, why on earth would you give birth to me?!"
She pushed me back.
"Don't you dare yell at me!"
"Then why do you hate me?"
"Because you ruined my life!"
She sighed deeply watching me.
"Sometimes I wish that I never met your father and I regret the fact that I liked him."
"I had my life ahead of me and I was going to be a famous journalist and then that jerk showed his true colors to me."
"He was only helping me become famous because he wanted to fuck me. And I was a virgin back then. I didn't want to give it to just any random guy."
"Knox didn't care about this and he forced himself on me and left me in ruins."
"In just twenty four hours my life was ruined. I couldn't even report him because his family had connections with the police."
"His family made the law."
"I lost my job and I was forced to move back in with my parents."
"His family made sure that I couldn't be hired by any decent companies."
She glared at me.
"And then you came along. I found out that I was just a few weeks pregnant."
"At first I didn't dare to tell my parents anything because they'd be disappointed in me but I couldn't keep my pregnancy hidden forever. Eventually I told them everything from the beginning."
"He threw me out of the house and I ended up staying on the Streets like a homeless person."
"My mother didn't want me to go but she didn't have much of a choice."
"Brandon found me on the streets when you were just a month old and he offered me a new life."
"Deep down I knew that I needed a fresh start and I agreed to marry him."
She scoffed in annoyance.
"You look just like him, if it wasn't for that red hair you would be his twin. I'm sure that he must be pleased with himself somewhere out there."
"How is this my fault? I was just a baby, how could I possibly ruin your life?"
I wiped my tears away.
"I think that you're just blaming me so that you could feel better because you're still mad at my father for what he did to you."
"You're just taking it out on me."
"But you know what? This is only hurting me and you've been doing that since childhood."
"I thought I was going crazy at some point because you always treated me like garbage."
"Do you know how much emotional damage you've done to me?" I sobbed tearfully.
Amber glanced at her wrist watch frowning.
"We have to leave or we'll never arrive on time, grab your things and meet me outside."
She walked past me and spared one last glance over her shoulder.
"If you're desperately trying to find your father I suggest that you start watching some TV for a change."
"Who knows, maybe you might find him or not."
I went to my room and grabbed my luggage.
I looked at myself in the mirror.
Another rejection.
She didn't want me near her and now she was getting rid of me.
I was truly the unwanted daughter.
I washed my face in the bathroom and went downstairs dragging my suitcase with me.
I opened the trunk and placed it inside.
The drive to the new school was long and awkward and I decided to ignore Amber by wearing my headphones so that I could listen to some music.
It wasn't long before I drifted to sleep and heard her calling my name.
I took my headphones.
I rubbed my sleepy eyes and looked outside the window.
We had stopped at the gas station.
"This is our last stop. I suggest that you get yourself some snacks and maybe go to the bathroom."
She handed me some cash.
I nodded quietly and came out of the car.
A few minutes later I came back to the car with a few snacks and drinks.
She resumed driving while I ate my food in silence.
And three hours later the car came to a stop. I looked outside and stared at the boarding school which rather looked like a haunted house full of ghosts.
Fate finally led me to my doom.
We were miles away from New York.
I turned to look at Amber.
I never liked her new name.
"So this is it?"
I scoffed in annoyance.
"You're just going to abandon me here?"
Amber sighed deeply and reached out of her bag to take out an envelope.
She handed it to me.
"This envelope contains some money. It's not a generous amount so I suggest that you use it wisely."
"I'll be sending you some money once a month."
I grabbed the envelope and got out of the car to retrieve my luggage.
I was about to walk away but her voice stopped me in my tracks.
"The least you can do is get yourself an education because no man will ever marry an illiterate woman" she muttered in a cold tone.
Before I could think of a fitting reply she drove away leaving me alone and the worst part was that she never turned back to see how broken I was because she was leaving me here.
Someone placed their hand on my shoulder. I turned around and found an elderly woman smiling at me.
"Ah you must be the new student from New York Ms. Evans right?"
I nodded quietly.
"That would be me ma'am."
"Come with me I'll show you to your room and make sure that you receive your uniform, books and schedule."
I nodded quietly and followed her into the school.
The students kept giving me weird looks.
I learned that the woman's name was Mrs. Summers.
She showed me to my room.
"You'll be staying here from now on and this is your new roommate Jodelle. She's also new but she's been here for a week."
"I'm sure that she'll be more than happy to show you around."
Once Mrs. Summers was gone I ignored the other girl and started unpacking my suitcase.
Jodelle jumped in to help unpack and I held her hand stopping her from touching my things.
"I don't recall asking for your help."
I let out of her hand and she moved back.
"I'm sorry I thought you were exhausted and maybe that you might need some help."
"I don't need your help besides I'm capable of unpacking my own clothes."
Tears silently spilled down her cheeks.
She walked past me and sat on her bed.
Was she such a cry baby?
I rolled my eyes inwardly and groaned in annoyance.
I walked towards her.
"Look I'm sorry I didn't mean to make you upset I'm just mad that my mother left me here."
She wiped her tears away.
"No one wants to be Sparrow."
"Only unwanted kids end up because their parents don't want them anymore."
She was right.
My own mother didn't want me after all.
"Well I won't be one of those unwanted kids because of leaving this place tonight and I am never coming back."
"I think you should reconsider."
I shook my head negatively.
"I already came prepared. I'll just wait for everyone else to fall asleep and make my big escape."
"This school isn't so bad Sparrow I thought it was going to be pure hell but it's tolerable."
I took out some rope.
Tonight.
When everyone else fell asleep including Jodelle. I tied the rope to my bed and threw out the rest outside the window.
I began climbing down the rope once I made it to the ground I sighed with relief.
I was still alive.
I ran into the woods and made my way towards the town. It was almost deserted since it was very late and only a few shops were open.
I took a deep breath and stopped near a bridge.
I looked into the water and saw my reflection.
I was going to go to a place where no one would ever find me.
Hell.
I climbed on top of the bridge and closed my eyes.
No one would care if I died anyway.
Before I could take a step forward someone pulled me by my hoodie yanking it hard.
I let out a gasp when we both fell to the ground with a thud.
I landed on top of a hard body.
Our eyes locked intensely.
It was a boy.
"Are you crazy?" He muttered quietly, still holding me in his arms.
