Having come with no clothes or bag, Alec had nothing to pack. So he had plenty of time to explore the academy.
Alec ended up sharing his room with two more people and to his surprise, he knew both of them, Davin and Byron. They were three in a single room, spread out from another evenly, but other than that, the room was pretty empty.
There was just a single cupboard for each to use by their bedside.
Students were highly expected to spend their time studying or practicing, not for pleasure. That was why the room was designed efficiently for their use.
"You guys aren't planning on staying in here all day, are you? If no, then what do you guys wanna do today?" Byron asked.
"I'm done packing, anywhere you wanna take us is okay. Not like I have anywhere else to go, haha," Davin meekly replied. Since other students didn't want to talk to him, he will have to stay close to the ones talking to him. Maybe that will help with his findings.
"I was thinking of heading to the military library," Alec said but hearing no response he quickly uttered. "I know, that will probably be too boring for you guys."
"Boring? You said it's boring. Sure, I'd love to try some out, besides I haven't really read a book for a….." Byron paused for a while. "I can't even remember the last time I read a book."
The three of them laughed at Byron's words. The three, having agreed on going to the library, headed there at once.
When they arrived there, they found out that the first floor was bustling with students.
Though many students filled in the library, surprisingly, no single noise was heard. The place was very quiet and calm with only the flipping sound of pages heard.
The library had multiple square tables all lined up with four chairs beside them. Alec noticed that at the center of the tables was a spherule glowing brightly.
Seeing Alec stare repeatedly at the glowing object, Byron asked.
"Arr, you're probably wondering what the spherule in the middle of the table is, aren't you?"
"I guess this is your first time being in a public school. The glowing thing is actually used for the prevention of noise. Haven't you wondered why there was no noise here with so many students around? If you touch the spherule, it will allow you to create an isolated space. Inside only those people you invited can hear each other. This way people will be able to talk to each other, without disturbing each other."
"Wow. Now I'd make sense why the place wasn't noisy with some many students around." Alec thought.
"Hey guys meet you later, I wanna go over to where my favorite collection is, harems," Davin said before stomping out from the two.
Byron went red in the face on hearing what Davin said. Alec never bothered to think twice about what the latter said since his mind was more focused on how he was gonna learn more about the system.
The time limit of the quest was seven days and he had only five days left.
After Davin left, Alec and Byron chose an empty table for themselves. Just as Byron had explained, Alec saw people talking but couldn't hear a word.
According to Byron the spherule had a limited range and could only cover one table.
Alec searched around the first floor of the library and picked up many books about abilities. Most of them listing and describing the common abilities.
Byron wasn't too bothered and decided to select a random horror book to read.
The two sat at their chairs while Alec started to flicker away. After skimming through several books, he still was unable to find a single one that sounded like his system.
Byron had kept a close eye on Alec and noticed he had been picking many books of the same genre.
"What with the many books, are you looking for something in particular?"
Alec wasn't that good at lying so he thought for a while before answering.
"I was trying to decide on which ability to learn after I turned down the ability book, the school offered me." Alec lied through the teeth.
"Oh that's right, I almost forgot you rejected the military ability book. You know, at first, I had thought you were one of those groups that hated abilities but now I understand why you had rejected the book, maybe you don't wanna be a slave to the military," Byron said. "So which one do you wanna learn?"
"I haven't really found one. Although I saw something very interesting in this book, have you heard of an ability that comes in the form of a system?" Alec asked, indirectly wanted to know if Byron have heard of his system.
Byron laughed out loud on hearing that.
"That's really crazy. I have not heard or come across anything like that before. Abilities are something our bodies come to learn on their own. And when learned, it becomes part of us. Though abilities may come in different ways and manners but for the ones that come as a system, are you sure you haven't accidentally grabbed a fantasy book about mechs and A.Is?"
Alec felt a little embarrassed by Byron's reaction. Well, his reaction was pretty much normal for every sane person with good knowledge about abilities. Had it been he told Byron he had a system inside of him, he could have considered him weird and abnormal.
"Does this mean nobody knows system ability?" Alec couldn't help but ask himself.
Unfortunately, the reality was that Alec had an inbuilt system inside of him.
However, he didn't let that weigh him down because he continued to look around the library to see if he could find anything about the system.
Unfortunately, he went through every book containing ability without finding any single detail about the system.
Alec then considered trying his chance in checking out the upper floor where the second years have their library.
"Maybe there is something up there that's not here, but I can't imagine what the academy will do to me for breaking rules, especially on the first day. I might already be on their radar for refusing the ability book that was offered by them. Might also even make them to start suspecting me unnecessarily" Alec thought.
Throwing away that thought, he continued his search in the library, going from section to section. He later considered what Byron said earlier, maybe he should venture into the fantasy section to see if he could find anything
However, as soon as he entered the fantasy section, a book titled, 'we are hybrid' immediately caught his attention. Alec took the book and gave it a quick look. Despite abilities being accepted, no one had openly declared himself a hybrid.
"I remember the system named itself as a hybrid," Alec thought.
To sate his curiosity, Alec opened the book and began reading it. Having flipped through the book he saw it was pretty much more useless than he thought. The book mentioned a lot of things done by hybrids. The book said hybrids were creatures formed from demons and vampires.
But unlike vampires that require blood for survival, they do not require blood for survival but rather get stronger. The book also said they had both the unique abilities of a vampire and a demon. They could also morph.
Their ability to cast magic and illusions were far greater than that of normal vampires and demons but Alec had none of these.
After learning of the book's content and seeing nothing about the system, he decided to close the book and call it a day. It seems he wouldn't find anything on the first floor.
As soon as Alec closed the book and returned it to its shelf, the familiar ding sound of the system and a screen appeared before his eyes.
