Alec headed straight to his room immediately after he left the training ground.
The system had given him a quest to find out more information about it. But the question was, how would he be able to do that? As a matter of fact, people knew nothing about the system and that was the only way he could have obtained the information easily.
Another problem with the quest itself was time-limited to seven days meaning that it should be completed within the time range of seven days.
After moments of thought, he managed to come up with an idea.
'Even though people don't know anything about the system, I assume that maybe I can find some written stories of some sort. Probably a few ability books might match up with the system's ability. I will ask sir Karg when he gets back to know if there are such books in his collection,' Alec thought.
With that being decided and agreed upon, he proceeded with the plan.
The rest of the day passed with Alec staying in his room and also walking around the house since he had nothing else or someone else to talk to.
Mr. Karg and his wife went out after breakfast while Kim stayed unseen for the rest of the day.
Though Alec did know that she was somewhere around the house, he couldn't pinpoint her exact location. Her scent kept on lingering around the house.
At a time when he felt bored and wanted to take a stroll around the house, he came across Kim's scent but because he couldn't pinpoint her exact location he decided to play ignorant of her presence.
Also, it was gonna look weird for an unskilled non-ability user to see through the invisibility of a high-level ability user.
However, while Alec was trying his best to act as if he hadn't noticed her presence, a message had dropped before his eyes.
Ding!
[Mystique reading..]
[Ability user has been detected nearby]
[User's skill: invisibility]
[Battle mode activated]
At once Alec felt all the hairs in his body rise like he was ready to go berserk any time soon.
"I guess this is not needed. This person is not a foe but a friend!" Alec subconsciously barked.
Though he said those words, a part of him still doubted whether Kim was his friend or just the daughter of his friend. Well, one thing he knew for sure was that she wasn't gonna kill him, unlike any other demon.
A few minutes later, the feeling had gradually died down so he decided to head back to his room.
After dinner that night Alec decided to ask Karg out alone on the balcony to discuss his plan.
"I'm sorry, Alec but we don't usually study such books here but even if we must read them, then the ones in the school library are enough. Maybe when you get to school you will get to pick ones of your choice, what do you say?" Karg suggested with a genuine smile.
"School? I haven't heard of that before. Do you mind telling me a few things about school?" Alec said, finding the word school a bit interesting. If he could find the book there, then there was a high chance that he could find other solutions to his problem and ones to come in the future.
"Well, there is nothing special about school. It's just a place where we acquire different skills and knowledge to manage our abilities. Those who are with no ability also get to learn one there. Apart from these things I mentioned, we also get to learn many other things at school," Karg explained.
Hearing that, Alec's joy knew no bounds. There, his very first problem, which was a way of getting strong, has been sorted out and if he eventually finds the book he is searching for there, then the system's quest can eventually be completed. That's like using a stone to kill two birds.
With a big smile plastered on his face, Alec replied saying,
"You don't mind if I join a school, sir, do you?"
Karg thought for a while before replying,
"I certainly don't mind if you join a school. As a matter of fact, I have already thought of it cause If you must survive in this world, you mustn't depend on other people for your protection. But there is one problem we have here and that's your I.D number. You currently don't have an I.D number as every other occupant of Creston city has."
Saying that, Karg went into detail, explaining how important it was for every Creston occupant to have the eight-digit I.D number.
"Not only is it required in schools but also in the marketing world," Karg explained.
"I know my question doesn't change anything but if I may ask, why does everyone here have these numbers? Aren't names enough for identification?" Alec couldn't help but ask. He saw no point in everyone being numbered like they were some goods or stock.
"Because you're new to this world I will answer your question. Demons are the reason everyone has been numbered till today."
"Some demons can perform abilities such as human body creation and transformation, that's to say that they are capable of forming human bodies on their own as well as transforming into any human of their choice. Some who aren't able to perform these two abilities go ahead to possess human bodies."
"The main point of this explanation is to let you know that the numbering system was introduced to keep track of all the citizens in this city. Numbering system enables humans to be able to identify those demons that went on to transform into a random human without any I.D number."
"As for the ones that possess bodies of humans, exorcism, and lines of salt can be used to chase them away or kill them. But this process is limited to a few demons as it has little or no effect on Nephilim and special children."
"I guess you must be wondering why demons can't just choose any random eight-digit?" Karg asked as if reading Alec's mind.
"Well, kind of, "Alec answered. Honestly, that was what he had been thinking the whole time of Karg's explanation.
"The reason is this, all humans living in this city have their I.D number and names documented in all of the city A.Is including mechs. So it is even riskier to carry a fake number than having none," Karg explained.
Though Alec had terms (such as A.Is and mechs) he didn't understand in Karg's last few sentences, he chose not to brag further for knowing the meaning of them since his interest was more on the outcome of the long explanation.
"So what happens then? I won't be able to join a school?" Alec asked that question with sadness visibly clear in his voice and eyes.
"Come on, I never said that. I will see what I can do about it. But whatever happens, prepare because you are joining school tomorrow." With that being said, both men retired to their rooms.
Alec was more than happy that finally, he will get to solve his two most pressing problems.
