Chapter 1 - Preface

Long ago, before man became the dominant species on the planet, there was another species that ruled. This species was more than superior to humanity, they were downright godlike.

The name of this species along with most other knowledge of them was lost to time and they simply became known as "The Powers That Were".

These powerhouses were said to not only be stronger but smarter and more ruthless than any human that has ever lived, having only allowed humanity to live simply to serve them as their slaves and build shrines to satisfy their ego.

Each one of these shrines was unique to their owner as they were said to perfectly symbolise their personality and temperament, but they also became their tombs upon death buried in the ashes of all of their slaves who as was custom were burned alive upon their masters death.

When The Powers were at the height of their civilisation they were said to be able to perform miraculous feats, the two that were famous enough to survive the loss of knowledge was forest to rival the amazon was created within minutes and when an entire continent was reduced to atoms with a finger snap.

This amount of power would cause obvious problems if they were to ever go to war so they set 5 rules that they all had to follow or risk the wrath of all of the others.

Although the fifth rule is among the lost knowledge the other rules were as follows:

1- No fornication with human slaves

2 - All disputes will be put to council

3 - No entry is to be made into another's shrine

4 - The Earth must be preserved

Although the other rules were important there was a reason for the first to be the most important, there was a prophecy that was among them that was stated to be based around their destruction at the hands of a hybrid between the 2 species.

This prophecy created fear and confusion among the Powers which was the reason for humanities enslavement to begin with they were terrified of a half human child becoming strong enough to rival them.

Of course there were the odd rule breakers in the beginning who just couldn't help themselves, these were killed and thrown in the ocean having lost the rights to use their shrine, the children created were reduced to atoms in the womb rather than allowing them to be born and the human was boiled alive in oil as punishment for having a part in creating such an abomination.

The fear for both the prophecy and the punishment were so much that the rule wasn't known to be broken again and peace was held.

But the fear of the prophecy remained throughout the rest of their reign and although it was unknown if true or even who it may be, rumours were spread of one who had no regard for the rules, this is where our story begins...
