This tree is fucking ginormous, it's gotta be at least 183 meters tall (that's 1 bald eagle over 2 football fields for the Americans) just the roots are nearly twice my height. The air is filled with the metallic smell of static and the pungent aroma of an ash tree. The air is still, no sound other than the slight rustling of the leaves. I begin my journey through the immense maze created by the roots of this great ash tree. The roots grow shorter as I continue through the labyrinth created by this beautiful yet intimidating marvel of the natural world. As the roots slowly careen themselves into the earth I get a much better view of this huge deciduous flora. It's magnitude only comparable to tens of thousands of Californian Redwoods fused together.
UAAAAAAGH!!
A blood curdling scream interrupts my fascination. It sounds like it came from the woods surrounding the great tree directly ahead of me. Before I can even decide what to do my body starts running toward the sound,
What am I doing? Why am I running towards the scream? I have watched too many horror movies to know this is how the characters end up dead. But alas I arrive to a scene most gruesome. A man betwixt the jaws of something I can only describe as a wolf bear. This beast is the size of a bear but looks exactly like a grey wolf, and it is currently digging its canines into the shoulder of a giant of a man. Behind the man, and who I'm assuming the source of the scream was, is a young women about 18 or 19 looking on in utter terror. Knowing the only way I'm going to have the strength to take on the plateaus is through fighting for my life, might as well get a head start. I grab a large branch that sat next to me on the forest floor, and I rush toward the beast. The branch plunges deep into the flesh of the beast knocking it back and removing it from the man's shoulder.
"Shit, now it's going to go after me." I mutter as the beast collects itself,
"Run, get the hell out of here!" I scream as I prepare for the beast to lunge at me, the man picks the woman up and runs of towards the tree shouting.
"I'll be back, hold him off!", but his words fall on deaf ears, the beast stares into my soul and before I know it I am dead.
"Back already?"
