Chapter 28 - 28

do any good anyway. Not anymore, and certainly not now. The only thing that mattered to him was putting an end to his curse.

There was still one more thing he wanted to do, however. The only thing that mattered right now. The only thing that mattered was to see her again. And although she was gone, he still had hope. Hope that she was still alive. And that someday he could see her again, if fate was willing.

"Wait!" he screamed as he ran past her and chased after the woman.

But he'd barely gotten any distance between them before he tripped over his own feet and landed face down onto the ground. He struggled to push himself back up, grunting in pain every time he touched the ground. Once he managed to stand straight, he stumbled through the trees, looking everywhere for the woman. He couldn' t help feeling uneasy. Where had she went? He had a bad feeling in his stomach about where she was headed.

He reached a clearing and paused. Sitting on the edge of it was a strange-looking tree, and next to it sat a small wooden hut. A smile spread across his lips as he approached the hut. Maybe he was wrong. Maybe she did turn out to be alive. Maybe she really was waiting for him inside that hut. And maybe...

Suddenly, his hopes were crushed when he saw her standing just outside, her back to him. She was holding the knife in her hand, her expression angry, as tears welled up in her bright green eyes. A few seconds later, she let out a cry of frustration.

He stood silently in shock as her shoulders shook. She began walking backwards towards him, wiping the tears from her eyes. Then without warning, she threw the dagger in her hand at him, crying even harder when it sailed past his nose and hit the tree behind him. He remained silent as she continued to stare at him coldly. He was afraid that if he even breathed a word, she would lash out at him. When she finally started moving again, she walked towards him until she stood directly in front of him. Their faces were inches apart, and she stared angrily at him, her arms crossed over her chest. She opened her mouth and said, "This is not how we were supposed to meet again. You promised..."

The words 'you promised' caused his stomach to turn violently. They weren't true. He remembered clearly. He had lied to her countless times throughout their adventures together. The look of utter disgust and disappointment she'd given him on numerous occasions was burned in his memory. Yet he had never once regretted it. He owed it to her to try to fix his mistakes. He deserved to make it up to her somehow.

"It's time to finish what we started." His voice cracked as he spoke. "Forgive me."

"No. No it's not. We're finished." She raised her eyebrows and glanced towards the path she'd come from.

"Please, let me try one more time."

"If you mean to die, fine. Go ahead. But I think the last person you want to kill today is yourself."

He sighed heavily. There was no going back now. At least, not that he could think of. And besides, he realized that he didn't want to live in this world anymore. In this world, no amount of begging would change anyone's mind about letting him die. But maybe, somewhere deep inside, a tiny part of him wanted to live just one more day. Just one more second to hold her in his arms again. One more moment to hear her say those three wonderful words. "I love you, Jason."

But that would never happen because now she thought he was dead. And although he felt devastated by this realization, he also felt somewhat relieved. Knowing that he wouldn't have to watch her marry another man just made it all the more painful to be rejected by her.

They both stood silent while they gazed deeply into each other's eyes. He searched her green eyes desperately trying to find the warmth, compassion and love she always showed him. Instead, all he found was hatred. Hatred that he knew he deserved.

After taking a step forward, she grabbed his chin roughly and tilted his face upwards so his eyes locked with hers.

"Are you really serious? Do you actually want to die?" Her voice sounded almost pleading.

"Yes."

"Then why didn't you just tell me that before leaving? You could've avoided this all!" she yelled frustratedly.

"Because I wanted to give you time. Give us time. Please, please understand." He pleaded with her as tears fell from his eyes.

"Why should I ever forgive you?" she shouted angrily, dropping her head in defeat. She let go of his face and backed away until her back hit the wall behind her.

"Because you loved me, and that was enough reason for me to fight for you, despite all the danger I might put you in."

"How noble of you," she mocked sarcastically.

"It isn't noble of me. That is just the way I am. But I promise that everything will be different. From now on, we shall save all of Gotham, and I will show you exactly how much I love you."

"Really?" she exclaimed sarcastically. "
