Chapter 33 - 33

help but gulp in fear and shook your head frantically. That was when they noticed the tears forming in your eyes. The look in your eyes told them you were frightened.

"Why won't you talk?!" yelled the first man.

Again, you shook your head. Tears began running down your cheeks. Finally, the first man lowered his weapon. He ran his hands across his face before stepping away from you. He walked toward the man with the gun and said quietly, "What do we do now?"

"Nothing until we know what she wants," said the first man softly. You watched as he approached the second man and whispered to him. The second man glanced over his shoulder toward the entrance of your apartment and then pointed down at you. The first man nodded and walked away.

Once your captors had walked off, you slowly sat up. You wiped your tear filled eyes with your arm, trying hard not to cry more. You reached into your bag beside you and pulled out a small notebook and pen. Quickly, you scrawled down everything you could remember and put the book back in your bag. You stood up and dusted yourself off, trying to ignore the pain in your head.

When you were done dusting your clothes, you walked over to the sink, washed your hands, and splashed some cold water on your face. Then you dried your hands and headed back into your bedroom. You rummaged around your closet for clothes, looking for a pair of shorts. After finding them, you dressed and stepped outside, locking the door behind you. You looked at your surroundings. The neighborhood seemed pretty deserted this early in the morning. Even the kids had already run off. As you continued walking, you tried to remember the address of the place you lived. Soon, you stopped dead in your tracks. This was the same building that had burned down a few months ago. Your heart skipped a beat as memories of the fire resurfaced. The memory of watching that building burn with a group of children inside made your blood boil. You clenched your jaw tightly before you turned around and went back the way you came. You walked past the park and into the woods surrounding it. A moment later, you arrived back at your favorite spot. You sighed as you took a seat at one of the wooden benches. With a defeated expression, you let your head fall onto the surface in front of you. A sob escaped your lips as tears slipped down your cheek. It was such a stupid thing to feel sad about. But you couldn't help it. After all, it was only your third day living here and the town had already caused you so much trouble. Why should you take it all lying down like this? Besides, it doesn't matter anyway, because there's nothing you can do to change it.

With a sigh, you lifted your head and closed your eyes. All of a sudden you felt someone standing behind you. You jerked upward, startled by the unexpected presence. A woman stood in front of you holding your hand. She smiled warmly and looked down into your eyes. Her skin color reminded you of cinnamon rolls.

"Are you okay?" she asked. You couldn't believe how beautiful she was. She radiated kindness and gentleness. You nodded your head, still stunned. She held your hand tighter. "I'm glad. Let's get something to eat. My name's Annabeth Chase." She extended her free hand, and you shook it gently. Her grip felt firm yet gentle. You studied her features carefully. She wore a pink blouse tucked into khaki shorts.

"My name is (Y/N) (L/N)." You followed Annabeth to the food court, but your eyes never left hers. She smiled and held her hand up, ordering herself a hamburger, fries, and some coffee. She gestured for you to sit next to her, and soon you found yourself sitting next to her with a cheeseburger sandwich in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other.
