Chapter 5 - New Class, Unfamiliar Faces (2)

If Kyril's last name was Channing, wouldn't that mean they were related? Or they could happen to have the same last name. But that was unlikely. Channing was an uncommon last name, after all. Oh well, I'm sure I'll find out someday soon. He seemed to be very popular among our peers.

Following my classmates, I quickly made it to the cafeteria while in my thoughts. It was not as busy as I thought it would be. I guess our class got dismissed earlier. After I got my food, I made my way to a cluster of empty seats. I tried to eat when a shadow cast over me. I gazed up and got greeted by a big, bright smile.

"Hi! Amelia, right? I'm Vera Channing! Nice to meet you!" She energetically greeted me.

"Oh- It's nice to meet you, too," I responded. Such an energetic greeting caught me by surprise.

Vera continued speaking.

"Don't you remember me? I sit right in front of you!"

I gave a confused look at her. Today's just been hectic, I barely remembered anybody.

I responded.

"Sorry, I-"

Vera cut me off before I could finish apologizing.

"Oh, I guess it's the first day after all. It's fine, Amelia. No need to be so high-strung. Let's get to know each other starting now!"

"Of course, I hope we get along, too." I smilingly said to her. It's great that she's so understanding, but it'll be challenging to keep up with her in the future. Sigh. Life seems to love surprising me.

Vera soon took a seat across from me after our little greeting. We began eating when I started to question.

"Hey, you said your last name was Channing, right? Does that mean-?"

"Oh, you want to know our relationship, right?" She started.

I nodded, and then she continued.

"You see, Kyril's my twin brother, and the Headmaster is our grandfather. Simple, right?"

"Very," I answered. Was Vera's answer meant to confuse me further?

"You say one thing, but your face says otherwise," she laughingly said. Why do I feel a sense of deja vu? Vera began to clarify her previous statements.

"Okay, so Kyril and I are twins, but we look nothing alike. Our parents are divorced. Father got custody over me, and Mother got custody over Kyril. And the Headmaster is from my father's side of the family," Was this something she should casually mention?

"Has anyone ever told you that you have a very expressive face, Amelia?" Asked Vera curiously.

"No," I firmly answered. Not many people have been in my life growing up.

"Hmmm? I don't think being expressive is a bad thing, though. Anyways, back on topic, please don't feel bad. Our family gets along great. I believe it's nothing to fret over, so you shouldn't worry either, Amelia." Vera reassuringly said.

"Alright," I said. It's a good thing Vera's family gets along well.

Seeing as how our food was getting cold, we started back eating. We chatted here and there, enjoying our meal. Halfway through, students began crowding into the cafeteria. I soon understood why they suddenly started coming in, even though classes ended a couple of minutes ago.
