Nice straight hair, a freshly ironed uniform, finished off with a neatly tied bow, I, Amelia Knight, am ready for the first day of school. As hectic as the first day of school may be, there is an almost guaranteed chance of no homework. That means if everything goes accordingly, I will have the rest of the day off. Nice. I then set off to school with a calm heart, unbeknownst of the battlefield ahead.
There is an assembly at the beginning of each school year that welcomes both new and returning students. It starts around 8:00 A.M., so as I arrived at the entrance, I was about five minutes early.
As it was best to be early than late, I made my way in, following the train of students.
As soon as I entered, I was greeted by a large proscenium stage, complemented by red-colored velvet curtains drawn to the side, revealing the great location behind.
A tall, black wood podium with a microphone stood in the front center.
If the stage was this nice, the rows of navy-blue seats were also of excellent quality. Although the academy has been around for years, the seemingly years of careful maintenance have given this theatre a vintage type of beauty, as expected of Theobul Ealhheard Academy.
As my mind wandered off, I arrived at a seat. It seemed to be that there were no restrictions on where to sit. As soon as I took a seat, the lights began to dim. Everybody soon began to quiet down and paid attention upfront.
When the lights fully turned off, the headlight shone and illuminated an older man walking from backstage and onto the podium. Soon after adjusting the microphone, he began his speech.
"Welcome to all the new and returning students! I'll be your headmaster this year, Earl Channing. You can refer to me as either Headmaster Channing, Mr. Channing, or even just Headmaster will be fine. Before we get into the nitty gritty bits, let's welcome our school orchestra and band. They'll be playing for us the school anthem."
From around me, I could hear murmurs and whispers. From what I gathered, this year's Headmaster is new. I bet they didn't expect his speech to be this short. I didn't expect so, either. He sure is an anomaly. Let's hope this ceremony ends smoothly.
After the performance finished, the Headmaster came back onstage. Headmaster began to continue his speech.
"That sure was a fabulous performance. Let's give a round of applause to the orchestra and band."
Clap.Clap.Clap.
"Now I'm sure everyone's very excited to go to their new classes, so I'll try to make this short. As you all know, each of our four grades has one student body representative. And these four will be the prime candidates in the student body president election. Please come up, our grade representatives."
Three students stood up and began to make it toward the stage. How odd, wasn't there supposed to be four? The Headmaster soon got to the point.
"Now, the incoming students usually would've already chosen a representative."
That's the first time I've heard of it. Did I miss something important? The Headmaster continued.
"But, isn't that unfair? Everybody came from different schools; who can you vote for except among yourselves?"
I soon got a bad premonition. The Headmaster continued talking.
"So, the academy has decided to pick the overall best student. From their grades to their activities, this student was the best candidate. Will you please come up? Miss Amelia Knight."
