Chapter 11 - Freyrin

Irumina: "Who's dumb idea was it to approach this damn thing, anyway?! We're all as good as dead!"

Locked in combat with the chiron, Irumina just barely blocked a blow from its huge broadsword. The impact sent her tumbling to the ground.

Kori fired a row of arrows at the beast: "last I checked, it was your dumb idea!"

Tatsu: "four point casting: lightning pillar! Guys, now's not the time to argue! Jim's in danger!"

Tied up above a vat of boiling water, Jim squirmed, screaming at the top of his lungs.

Jim: "Help meee!"

The situation's a mess, and there's no way we're getting out of this unscathed. Irumina's incapacitated, Kori's low on arrows, and Jim is, well… Jim.

Kori: "Tatsu, Look out!"

Tatsu: "what?!"

The chiron brought down his incredible broadsword and sliced Tatsu in two… Is what should've happened.

But he suddenly stopped upon meeting eyes with Tatsu.

???: "You there, Young human."

Tatsu: "you mean me?"

???: "I sense the blood of old coursing through your veins. Tell me, who might your forefathers be?"

Tatsu shook his head: "Sorry, I never knew them. To be honest, I don't know anyone of my bloodline outside of my immediate family. Wait, you can talk?"

???: "Indeed, human, I can. Forgive me. My name is Freyrin of the chiron race."

Tatsu: "I see… but what do you mean by 'blood of old'?"

Freyrin: "It's quite interesting, you smell almost exactly like my master. Now that I get a better look at you, you share quite a few similarities in fact."

The chiron leaned in and sniffed Tatsu heavily. This made him immensely uncomfortable. But still, They both had a few more questions.

Tatsu: "So, umm, who was your master?"

Freyrin spoke, still huffing intensely: "She was a woman of great power, near unrivaled."

Tatsu: "I see… And I remind you of her?"

Freyrin: "Yes, indeed, it is unmistakable. Your scent, your girlish frame, and your strange casting form. Even the taste of your thunder spells are identical."

Tatsu: "Okay, the middle one wasn't necessary and… Wait, the taste of our spells?!"

Freyrin: "That is correct, And in being so similar, there is no doubt that you are indeed the offspring of my previous master. Therefore, I will accept you as my new master."

Tatsu: "oh, okay… wait, what?"

Freyrin: "Indeed, I shall tell you about my old master, her name was Anastasia Tr--hkk!"

Suddenly, dust flew through the air and visibility fell to zero. Everyone coughed and Tatsu used a wind spell to clear the area.

Tatsu: "two point casting: wind bomb!"

As the dust settled, Tatsu looked around and did a head count. No one was missing except for…

Tatsu: "Where's Freyrin."

Kori: "Tatsu, l-look. Behind y-you."

Kori's body shook violently as she gazed at the sight before her.

Tatsu: "what is…"

Behind him, was the dismembered corpse of the chiron known as Freyrin. His left arm was missing and the rest of him was covered in deep red gashes. Except, of course, for the center of his chest, where instead there was a gaping hole, still spilling a flood of red onto the ground with a vulgar splashing sound.

Jim put his hand on Tatsu's shoulder: "H-hey, you good? I get it, it's horrible. But it happened. I'm sorry. Death is just a hazard of being a fighter. I'm sure he knew it could happen at any moment as well."

Tatsu brushed Jims hand off of his shoulder: "I don't know what the hell just hit us, but whoever it was…"

Tatsu: "I'LL BE SURE TO KILL YOU THE NEXT TIME I SEE YOU. DO YOU HEAR ME!? YOU'RE DEAD!"

Breaking into a sob, tatsu crumpled to the floor.

How was I supposed to be prepared for this? What the hell is wrong with this world? Death is horrible.

Witnessing his first death upon entering this world, the only thing Tatsu could do was tremble.

Tatsu was too terrified.

Enraged.

Mortified.

Horrified.

Disgusted.

Astonished.

Scared.

Tatsu picked up one of Freyrin's blood stained teeth from off of the floor. In monotone, he spoke once more.

Tatsu: "Let's go, we need to keep moving."

No one spoke for the remainder of the trip.

???A: "phew, that was a close one."

???B: "Indeed, just imagine the consequences of what might have been had we not interfered."

???A: "yes, yes, that impudent chiron ought to have kept his mouth shut."

???B: "the time isn't right, if he were to reveal the boy's origin now, it would ruin everything we've orchestrated. Decades of work, out the window!"

???A: "For now, I believe it to be best that we resume observing for a bit."

???B: "Too true, after all, we need to decide what to do with the new otherworlder. What was their name again? I believe her name was…"

???B: "Laura."
