Shouts and screams and yells. For an hour or so those were all that resonated in the giant foyer of the pack house. Nothing was stable and the wolves were losing their minds. Shortly after Evelyn had arrived another team was sent out to get the alpha back quick and safe.
Evelyn was running out of patience as one by one females and males were were gathering the medicines and the pack doctor still hadn't arrived. The panic was clear on all their faces but Evelyn was rather furious. She wanted to go down and drag that doctor up here by his collar but she refrained herself. Her mate would be here anytime soon and he was the only one who could calm her down.
With a loud bang, the front door opened or almost broke to demonstrate a few half-naked wolves. Gasps and worries became almost indispensable as the thick scent of blood filled the air in the foyer.
The pack doctor still hadn't arrived.
"Luna the doctor is tending to his wife, she's about to bear his children and it's a complicated case. The doctor says the delivery without his watch is a risky one." She was the delta female. She informed Evelyn and waited patiently for her next orders.
"What about the female doctor? Your pack ought to have one right?" Evelyn asked trying to sound calm for her fellow wolves.
"She's the one giving birth." She finished.
Evelyn thought this was how it was going to be. Sure she had the choice to summon the male doctor because in a pack, an alpha was the most prominent person, one who should live at all costs. But she felt selfish doing that, she knew what it was like to fear for a mate's life and she wouldn't want anyone to go through it.
They perched the alpha's bloodied body delicately on the table and refrained back. And they didn't delay to notice the absence of a doctor. They looked around suspiciously, pryingly but found nothing.
'You need to do it.' Evelyn's wolf encouraged her.
The next moment Evelyn was beside Michael's immobilized body, tracing the wounds that lay open on his torso. She took a deep breath before she started barking orders at the female wolves who'd warmed up to her in the last few minutes. Beta female and delta female included along with some lower rank females.
They gathered around her and obeyed her orders, gave her everything she'd asked for. No one in the room had the slightest idea about her doing until she held a knife close to Michael's bare chest.
The beta growled and almost instantly grasped her hand before she could've done any damage. He glared at her as a look of betrayal appeared in his eyes and the rest of the wolves stood in unison behind him, ready to fight if necessary.
Evelyn was irritated and the fury in her was inflamed by the beta's sudden outburst. How could he question her? How could he stand up to her? A brush of humiliation and rage bypass her features and she could instantly feel her wolf on the surface.
"How dare you question me! Your alpha is my mate and you might be capable of witnessing his death but I'm not!" Evelyn voice held all the rage which was suppressed in her soul for ten years. Her voice held the gravity that compelled the wolves to look for the deepest pit to hide themselves in the ground.
The beta instantly let go of her hand and stared at the ground in utter submission. That look of Evelyn was strangely frightening. The girl seemed like a mother-slash-queen who was punishing her children for speaking out of turn. From the scaring look in her eyes that had gotten impossibly dark from anger, they didn't defy her again and stood in complete silence, not bothering her task.
Evelyn held the penknife like a professional surgeon and drove it on the deepest wound in his stomach. She had to know what she was doing as she extended the wound a little on the edges and inserted two finger in his sticky stomach.
Every wolf swiftly gasped in horror as a thick nail emerged from inside the alpha's wound. Evelyn had felt there must be a blockage in his wound that was stopping it from healing completely and it was unquestionably one of those princes' nails. It was black and thick and sharp; just by the sight of it one could calculate the damage it could cause.
When the nail was out, blood unstoppably spurted out of his skin. Evenly was quick to wrap a cloth on the wound and she pressed it hard until the blood stopped spurting out. She took one of the pastes she had prepared in his absense and began coating it over his many wounds.
She was done shortly and was satisfied with her work but his eyes were still shut, blocking away the light and depriving Evelyn of the sight of his beautiful forest green eyes. She sought a glimpse of them now more badly than ever.
And just like on clue, the moon goddess had seemed to hear her feelings for his eyes were fluttering and the next moment he was awake but still seeming a bit dizzy. As soon as he took in his surroundings he was swift to wake up but Evelyn held him sternly in place. Before today she didn't know she'd possessed such strength as she compelled him to lie back on the table.
He flinched lightly at the contact of cold wood against his bare and tattered skin. "Rest." Was all she demanded but he didn't have the strength to fight back. He lied there and stared at the gorgeous face of his mate.
Evelyn was now cautious about the prying eyes of she-wolves on his mate's bare torso and she felt offended by that. She didn't accept her envy but her wolf didn't like sharing her mate with someone else.
She hurriedly took off the shawl she was wearing for the harsh coldness of the night and wrapped it around his shoulders to keep him warm.
Michael knew what she actually meant by that gesture and he couldn't help but smirk as she helped him get on his feet. He looked sore and pained but he was swift to cover it up with a blank face, something he always did with his pack around.
'An alpha shouldn't show his weaknesses to his pack, he's the one to hold them together.' William's voice appeared in her head. She'd heard him saying that to Oscar and to this very day, she couldn't understand the point of it.
"Alpha who—"
"That's a discussion for tomorrow." Evelyn shortly ended the beta's attempt of interference in her mate's peace.
She could feel Michael a bit surprised at her tone beside her but she paid him no mind. "It's been a long night, why don't you all rest and figure this out in the morning?" Evelyn demanded in a dismissive tone.
Although someone still had the guts to question her, "What if they attacked again?" It was the gamma female who apparently went by the name Zoey. Evelyn saw the gamma tugging lightly at his mate's arm but she still dared to speak anyway.
"They won't." Evelyn's words held much gravity and sternness, one that rather sounded like 'do you want to die?' by the look in her lethal eyes.
No one questioned her again and it was dead silent akin to the one after the storm when everything had wrecked by the winds. She didn't bother to give them a glance as she carried the heavy body of Michael upstairs. Her arm was wrapped around his waist and his was around her shoulders.
She led him to her room as she had no idea about his. Once inside she helped him lay on the bed and refrained back from his touch. He wasn't much energetic but his beast wanted to hurl at her when he saw her walking away.
She was seconds away from leaving when she was abruptly being paged by him.
"Don't leave." Was all he said but the wetness in his eyes touched Evelyn's heart. She needn't be told twice as bolted the door and made her way towards the bed. Something in her turned and twisted rapindly as she took her place on the bed, at arm's length from him.
And for the way he was, possessive and dominant, it didn't take his wolf more than a fraction of second to drag her close to his chest and bury his nose in the crook of her neck, inhaling her angelic scent.
Even though she was surprised, she wasn't appaled by it. She turned around in his grasp and stared into his deep passionate eyes. She was mentally adoring him when in reality she restrained herself from any touch to cause any unnecessary pain.
"Good night." She wished and he just shut his eyes, bringing his forehead close to hers. Even though there was nothing but warmth and comfort in his arms, it stung. It stung her because now the inevitable was crystal clear.
'He'd never be ours.' Her wolf squealed in her head as Evelyn snuggled into him, savouring this moment of joy.
