Chapter 36 - The bets

While all this was on going, Hunter was thinking about the whisperer in his head. He was certain that such person was either in the Mentalist class or another class that had to do with the mind. The voice wasn't commanding when it declared for silence, it was more like a persuasion like the voice of a temptress. Feminine, smooth, sweet and soft. It involuntarily made him want to listen to her over again and again as he recalled her voice in his head. He was maybe the only one or one of the few who had noticed quite the distinct nature of why they were told to keep calm and they all did instinctively without question. But looking at the crowd, he was confident that he was the only one thinking about this.

Above their heads was the clock still counting down. Now ten seconds left to go, everyone was getting ready and finalising their stances. Most folks were in groups or pairs. But there were some that were on their own, you could say they were confident in getting to that place within five minutes or less or perharps no one wanted them in their team. But with the presence of contracts such scenario was very unlikely.

"Hayden, please could you do me favour and become my ride ?" Hunter asked with a wry smile on his face.

"Ha ha ha ha " Hayden bursted out laughing loud as his actions drew the attention of those around him. Once again people began to talk in mushed tones about the cripple and how he was going to win. Someone even said that maybe this race was put in place so that the cripple wouldn't make it.

"It never been heard of a legless man winning a race right", someone asked again.

"Hey I bet a hundred gold coins that the cripple doesn't get admitted" A lanky boy with an unusual long nose called out loud.

"Make it one fifty" a pretty pink haired girl said.

"Double her amount" a huge muscular dude carrying a heavy shield said.

Immediately people began to take a peep at him before placing their bets.

All this fluttered through the ears of Hunter. And fair to say now, that he was getting pissed off and quietly he marked the faces of the most vocal ones, not those who had to hide their faces or cover their mouths when saying shit about him, but those who seemed confident in backing up their words with action if it ever comes against them.

Those were the ones who you would call the confident bullies and the lips hiders, the hench men. Take out the head and the followers disperses. But for now he wasn't going to treat anybody fuckup just because their mode of action was through gossiping. But when anyone tried to go physical with him, he was sure to give them a run for their money.

"Sure brother, anytime. We could even bet that I would be the first to get there". Hayden said out loud as his boasting got some snarky remarks from the people who were staring at the duo.

"First a cripple, and now a clown". A bald headed boy spoke he stared at them. Standing at six feet with huge and broad shoulders. He looked at them with disdain. His skin was caramel brown with patches of black and white as he had feathers sticking out broadly behind his back.

"Mhmm a man in the path to being a warlock ?" Hayden asked the new comer who came closer towards them.

"Yes!" He announced proudly "And you ?"

"He's a failed experiment".

Hunter said quickly before Hayden could even reply as the blaring sounds of a siren rang out. Those who were laughing immediately shut up as no one needed to be told that it was time to move out as the barrier immediately disappeared alongside with the clock.

"Go"

"What about our luggage!" some of the students to be shouted as their peers took off . Some folks turned back to catch a glimpse of their fellow humans in distress before turning around, laughing while running.

Those who got caught in the heat of the moment and had no dimensional storage couldn't help but stop in their tracks as they looked back towards their belongings which screamed; Don't betray me buddy, please I beg of you!.

There was a loud cackle of laughter above the skies, like the witch in Hansel and Gretel after seeing two soft fleshy plump children entering her abode. Immediately the weather began to rumble as the skies got darken. Instantly, all the luggage disappeared as someone who was among those in front of the running pack screamed brace for impact.

"Yes! yes! and all your bags shall now disappear!....if you fail, I shall ear you and the bags!"

The cackle of a high pitched voice laughing resounded across the skies as the sound of rumbling clouds continued with occasional flashing of lightning strikes.
