Chapter 56 - Chapter 56: Yeti

May turned to pull the map from her satchel and read it again. "It looks like the next test is to go to the Land of Ice and retrieve a powerful horn." I then turned to look up at Saniel. "Know where that is?" Saniel nodded and took us into the sky once again. We started heading in the direction of the Land of Ice, but once it became dark we stopped on the ground again to camp for the night.

It had soon become morning before we knew it, and we took to the air as soon as we finished eating for the morning. I stayed silent for most of the flight, thinking about what May told me. After a couple of hours, the air became colder, and more mountains covered in snow appeared through the clouds below us. The chill ran up my armor, and I tried to ignore the cold when I heard clicking come from behind me.

I turned around to see May with large wooden needles in her hands and wrapping pink yarn around each with incredible speed. "Are you knitting?" I asked with confusion taking control of my expression. May looked up at me with a smile. "Yep. We're going to need some protection from the cold once we get there, and I'll definitely need a wing cover to prevent them from freezing and breaking." She then finished off the row she was working on and held up a sheath-looking piece of knitted cloth.

She turned and slipped it onto her wings fully, and put on a knitted sweater with a big red heart on the front, a hat, mittens, and scarf right after. She also pulled two long stockings out from the pile in front of her and slipped them onto her legs. "Tada! All bundled! Don't worry Dedrin, I made some for you too!" She then held up a black sweater that had orange and red flames designed at the bottom. "I made it cool-looking just for you!"

I raised an eyebrow. "I'm good." She put the sweater down and her face became worried. "But, it'll be freezing down there! You'll catch your death of cold!" I turned around again and scoffed. "The most we'll be there is a couple of hours. I'll be fine." May still had worry on her face but she didn't say anything else until we landed in the snow.

We landed near the top of one of the many mountains that connected throughout the gorge, and I could feel the sharp pain of the ice within the air attach to my body and fill my lungs. It was snowing enough to be a blizzard, but the clouds that covered the sky were bright from the sun's light reflecting through them. I ignored the cold and started walking forward. May stayed behind for a moment to wrap a large scarf around Saniel's neck.

I had no idea how she had the time or the yarn needed to make all of that but right now my mind was elsewhere. I started to shiver as I felt my armor freeze as it pressed against me, and May noticed me shaking as she ran to catch up to me. "Please put on the sweater, Dedrin! You're shivering!" I continued to look forward as we walked. "I already told you, we're going to be out of here soon. There's no point. Now, let's focus on where to start looking for the horn."

Suddenly, one of the large piles of snow in front of us started to move. I stopped walking to the realization that it wasn't a snow pile and was actually a giant yeti that was standing up at least twelve feet tall. It had white fur all over its body, light red eyes, and gray skin around the space on its face where there wasn't hair. It turned towards us and roared loudly, sending the snow around us back into the air. I immediately drew my sword and blocked the snow with my other hand. "Run!"

May and I ran in different directions and the yeti decided to follow me. I ran through the snow, not knowing what the terrain looked like under it. The yeti made the ground shake as he chased after me and continued to roar. I turned my head to look behind me as I ran and saw the yeti's hand come straight toward me to smash me into the ground.

I quickly turned and slashed its hand with my sword, sending it back with a shriek. Blood came from the wound but it didn't stun the monster for long. I then ducked under another attack from its other hand and turned to run again. I noticed that the edge of a cliff was in front of us and I got an idea. The yeti was close behind as it chased me, and once I reached the cliff I quickly stopped myself from going over the edge and slipped behind the monster in between its legs and slashed the back of its calves.

The yeti shrieked again and fell forward off of the cliff, but not without turning and grabbing me to take me down with it. "Ah!" Its grip only lasted a second and it let go as it fell further than me. I could hear May yell after me as I plummeted. Somehow, I landed on a lower ledge on the side of the cliff as the yeti disappeared into the fog of the gorge below. I shook as I sat up and I looked at the nothingness below me.

'Well, what do you know? A cliff saved me this time.' I then returned to my feet and started climbing back up the wall next to me. Once I got close enough, May saw me and helped me back to the top. "Dedrin! I'm so glad you're okay! I thought you were a goner!" She pulled me to my feet, but before I could answer her I heard some faint roars echoing through the canyon. I turned and saw more yetis walking on ledges and through the trees in numbers on each of the mountains in the distance. I sighed at the sight. "Looks like we're going to have to be more stealthy."

A while had passed, and so far no more of them had seen us since May and I focused on hiding as we traveled. I still didn't know where a horn could be hidden in a place like this, and the cold had started to get to me. We were hiding behind a boulder as some yetis walked by, and May then turned to me to whisper. "I have an idea. What if we follow them? They all seem to be heading in one direction, so maybe they know where the horn is."

I hesitated for a second, then nodded. After more strategic maneuvering out of the monsters' sight, we eventually ended up near the top of one mountain where the yetis were heading. I noticed that there was an entryway ahead with statues on either side and on the walls. The statues' crevices were covered in snow from the blizzard, and there were more pillars against the entrance and inside.
