I have heard those words in a movie, but the man wasn't any other ordinary being. He was more than that. That is why I think it's ridiculous.
"How can you be so certain? Are you a supernatural being with inhuman abilities?" I chuckled to mock him. But he didn't speak. He was facing front, static for several seconds. And I didn't have enough courage to interfere on his sudden silence.
"Are... you mad with me again?" I asked carefully. I didn't mean any offense. It was supposed to be a joke.
"No," he finally answered. I was relieved.
"Hold on to me now, Eve. Make sure it's tight enough."
He made the engine roar again. I immediately wrapped my arms around his waist, afraid that I might fall if I won't hold tight enough. It would be a terrible fall, I'm sure. It earned a chuckle from him.
"Not too tight, please."
"Oh! I'm sorry..." My cheeks burned and quickly loosened my arms on him.
I almost jumped in surprise when he held both my hands and put it in the right places. He put it on his abdomen, parallel to each other. I shivered when I realized how hard he was. His back, his abdomen... even his hands. It was like his body was made out of granite. He didn't feel cold, though. I actually found him warm that it was very comforting to hug him like this. It was like tasting summer in the middle of cold winter nights, filling my thirst for heat.
"Are you ready?" he asked.
My mind went haywire.
"I will never be."
"You are worrying for nothing, Eve. Just hold on to me and nothing will happen," he promised.
I sighed and moved closer to him, my chin was almost touching his shoulder. As he pulled out of the block, I was almost trembling. He gently tapped my hand and that somehow calmed me. It was his way of telling me that everything was fine. But then he suddenly sped up and my eyes widened when I realized he's over speeding! My hold around him tightened in response to my fear. With his fast speed, I felt like I'm going to fall anytime soon. He chuckled cockily but it didn't make me calm.
"Don't hold too tight. It's distracting me..." he mumbled hoarsely. But I can no longer think straight enough to follow what he said. He didn't bother to slow down even there was a ten wheeler truck ahead of us.
"Stop over speeding!" I cussed under my breath. "Do you really want us to die on a road accident?
"That will not happen, trust me." He laughed as if this is very amusing for him.
"Shut up. You think this is funny?" I slapped his abdomen. But I don't think he was the one who got hurt. His body is so hard like a stone. Is that even possible for a human? Or maybe I'm just imagining it?
"Just trust me."
I sighed and calmed myself. The cold wind was blowing towards us but I didn't feel any cold. I was warmed with his body. And somehow, the comfort hushed the raging fears. My heart was pounding violently against my chest like a sudden turbulence. I moved myself a bit from him, afraid that he might feel the crazy beating of my heart. Not sure if it's because of the fear, though.
"It's really your first time?" he asked after a while.
"I told you," I muttered. "Why do you prefer big bikes, anyway? Rich people usually prefer luxurious cars."
"I don't like cars." What a simple reason.
As soon as he parked in Alderwood Mall, I jumped out of his Diavel instantly. He was smirking when he took off his helmet. I also removed mine and gave it to him. He watched me fixed my tangled hair and waited until I was finish before he spoke. A boyish smile plastered on his face, flashing his perfect white teeth.
"I told you. You would be safe."
I scorned. "It was luck that saved me."
"You don't trust me, don't you?"
"It was my first, Carter. What do you expect? Dying in a road accident is the least thing I'd want to happen. I'd rather die in illness or get killed by some random person than die miserably with my flesh and blood all around the road and my skull terribly broken."
His expression turned hard, very serious.
"Don't talk about your death again. It's not funny," he warned.
"I was only trying to prove a point."
"Even so." He was still dead serious.
"A-Alright." I bit my lower lip. "Aren't we going inside?"
"Let's go."
I walked first and he immediately coped up. I noticed that there were only a few people around, must be because the mall had just opened. I don't know why Carter planned on shopping at this early. But it was an advantage. I prefer buying in malls if it's not crowded. Not that I fear the crowd, though.
Two female staffs immediately went to us when we entered a fashion boutique. Though even I was the first one who went in, they went to entertain Carter first. I was slightly pissed but I didn't complain. I just walked away and had a little tour around the boutique. I thought Carter would give those staffs a little chitchat but to my surprise, he followed me right away. I glanced at him and realized how out of place he was in the middle of girly dresses. I stifled a smile.
"Why did you left those two?" I glanced at the staffs in the corner. They were shamelessly staring at him, giggling.
"They obviously like you. You should have let them entertain you for a while. I'd be picking clothes and it would take time. You'd get bored."
"Not when I'm with you," he answered very casually that I was taken aback.
"What am I to you? Do I look like a funny clown?" I laughed and checked a dress.
He chuckled. "No. In fact, you look scary. Like Annabelle."
My jaw dropped. Annabelle? The possessed doll? I glared at him for his rude remark. How dare he compare me to that ugly evil doll!
"Kidding." He pursed his lips to stop a smile from escaping. I raised my brow at him and walked towards another rack or clothes. He only followed me, though.
"I heard you rejected Maddison in front of many students." I turned to him and smirked. "You are heartless."
"Is saying the truth being heartless to you? Besides, why would I delay the rejection? She'd just get her hopes up."
Well, he had a point.
"Why didn't you like her anyway? She's gorgeous. I was surprised that a man could reject her."
"Right. She's gorgeous," he said with no hint of interest in his voice.
My eyes narrowed. "And then?"
"That's it," he replied dryly.
"You didn't think of dating her at all?"
He grimaced. "Not even once."
"How odd." I grabbed the white dress and went to another rack. He was just there beside me, watching my every move with his intense sea-green orbs. It was distracting.
"Maybe you have a bad taste for girls," I mumbled to myself silently that even I didn't hear what I said. It was like my lips moved but without a sound.
"What did you say?" Carter asked.
"Nothing serious."
"Tell me, Eve," he demanded.
"Well..." I turned to look at him. "I said, maybe you have a bad taste for girls."
He looked down and blinked once. When his sea green eyes found mine again, he was half-smiling. "I guess so..."
