Eva's POV
Amidst the chaos that erupted, I felt a strong hand clamp over my mouth, cutting off any sound I might have made. Panic surged through me as I tried to twist away, but the grip was unyielding. The ballroom had turned into a whirlwind of confusion and fear, the music and laughter replaced by shouts and clamouring.
Amidst the anarchy, I could hear a distinct screaming among others. This time I could place the voice, it was my great aunt, Hilda. A light flashed and in the crowd I could see her on her knees, in a sorry state and lying in front of her was my great uncle. The lights went off again and something crashed. Its impact scattering shards of glass everywhere, I covered my eyes with my free arm. The chandelier had fallen.
"Children!" It was my mother's voice.
"Mother, I am here," I called back to her. For the first time tonight, I was glad that Josie was nowhere near here. I hoped she would be safe with Danielle.
