Chapter 40 - The Village of Statues (3)

Staring at him, Neferet said, "First, Brian, leave the statue alone."

Crossing his arms as he stared at Brian, and the statue said, "Second, Group one should be Armin, me, and Rebeca. Our combined skills can make a good vanguard."

Turning to see Shane, Neferet managed a slight smile as she said, "I'm still not sure what you can do, Shane." Pointing to Brian, she said, "Please go with Brian, he's faster, and you must find an alley or go up to a house to take the back of the group that comes."

Shane frowned and, making a face, said, "Well, if that's what the group decides. I can do it, but I'm not very comfortable."

While Brian was removing his foot from the statue's chest, the other man turned his head to look at him and raised an eyebrow in Brian's direction.

After doing a careful investigation of Shane, he shrugged, turned to face Neferet, and then indicated with a nod that the statue should be approached.

But first, he paused for a second and pointed his fingers in the direction of his eyes. After that, he repositioned his hands so that he was pointing towards the statue.

They all let out a collective sigh when it was time for everyone in the group to take their seats because it was an inconvenience.

The two buddies, Brian and Shane, got their running shoes on and headed out on one of the roads that led away from the location.

Neferet was hiding behind the monument that was in the center of the square when she and Armin were standing there together.

Following her flight, Rebeca spotted one of the more heavily defended wooden stands and knelt in cover behind it. After that, she positioned her weapon on the counter and pointed it at the road outside the restaurant.

Time appeared to stand still, and there was a significant amount of silence after the fog that was coming out of the entrance turned back into its original white tint.

It was reported that Shane and Brian were leaving the square in a very hurry, and the sound of their footsteps could be heard. After pausing for a considerable amount of time, Armin's eyes shifted, and he took a quick peek first at the rear of the statue and then at the road.

The jingle of a bell could be heard approaching even before the listeners were able to identify the sound of footfalls being made by the approaching person. Neferet was looking for Rebeca when she heard the bell, so she turned around.

They both gave each other disapproving stares as they looked at one another.

They were aggravated by the sound of the bell that they had already heard in the forest, as well as by the noise that accompanied it afterward.

Brian approached a series of houses on the side of the road when he and Shane were jogging down the road. As he got closer to the row of houses, he peered into the homes through the doors and windows as he got closer. He had been searching for a ray of optimism in the situation.

When Shane's eyes fixed on Brian's back, the other young men instantly saw that there had been a big adjustment made to the residence.

In spite of the absence of a facade, it towered above the rest of the buildings in terms of height. It stood at a height equivalent to three storeys. The only ones having two levels were the ones that were located closest to the plaza and the ones that traveled along the road; all of the rest only had one level.

Stopping at the door, Brian turned to see Shane and looked him in the eyes, and he said, "Can I ask you a question?"

When Shane listened to Brian's voice, it was smooth and calming, and there was not the slightest indication of hesitation in it.

It did not even remotely resemble a query at all. More in the form of an order. When everything came to a complete stop, the burgundy in Brian's stare contrasted beautifully with the coppery red in his own eyes.

After he was going to react, Brian interrupted him right away and shared some information with him.

"Do you want me to kill you?" Brian's face darkened as he took a step closer to Shane. His brows furrowed as he stared into Shane's eyes.

In addition to squeezing his fists tightly and twisting the fingers on both hands while doing so, Brian had an extremely angry expression.

As Shane felt the pressure rising in his chest, a chill ran down his back. At the same time, he was aware that his back was getting colder.

He took a single step back and quickly diverted his gaze in a downward direction.

He swallowed as he let out his voice in a low tone, "What do you say? Are you threatening me?"
