Chapter 42 - Renegades and Wretches (2)

Entering the house without a facade, Brian said, "Let's go up to see if we can use this to get to the roofs, don't be late, you bastard."

Shane's emotions started to spiral out of control, which led to him clenching his jaw so tightly that it pained his teeth and gave him a headache. As a result of this, Shane's feelings continued to spiral out of control.

When he looked up, he noticed Brian walking inside the house they were staying at.

As he cautiously followed Brian into the home, he swung the strap of his rifle over his shoulder and around his back.

Shane sneaked up on the home without making a sound, and he followed Brian inside.

The tension in his chest, which had been rising steadily, continued to rise despite the fact that there was a deafening quiet.

The discomfort in his septum continued to be dormant, but he refrained from touching his wound because he felt that doing so would violate some aspect of his pride, which forbade him to do so.

He didn't want to make a bigger spectacle of himself in front of the untidy Brian who was walking in front of him, so he avoided saying anything.

Brian immediately stopped moving forward when they were in the middle of what appeared to be an extremely artificial living room, with broken furniture pointing to the walls.

Letting out a sigh, Brian said, "Listen, it's not personal."

Brian raised his head to look at Shane, who was staring at the floor and had a reddening of the septum. Brian saw that Shane was upset, "The subject of my last name is something sensitive for me. So, I tend to get aggressive."

Shane looked up to see how Brian was holding his hand without clenching it in any way.

Shane stood up straight and said from the bottom of his chest, "I'm not going to apologize for what I believe."

Shane was able to keep his cool by keeping his hands at his sides the entire time. A mark from the bruising could be seen on his otherwise pale skin.

His fiery-red eyes were riveted on the expression that Brian was currently sporting.

He did not feel any remorse for his actions, but he wondered what would have happened if he had smiled and acted respectfully, "But, if I was out of place and I'm willing to work with you."

Brian's face creased into a sort of smile as he said it, and he slowly nodded his head as he continued, "At least you have the courage to look me in the eye and keep your insults."

He then withdrew his hand and turned to face a corridor while he continued his statement, "If you had the same ability as pride, you would be someone dangerous."

Shane, who was standing next to Brian, bared his teeth and took a few steps forward before looking into what appeared to be a kitchen.

The chairs' backs were extremely tall, and their legs rested on the stool, all of which were indicators of poor construction on the chairs' part. They were positioned so that they faced each of the room's four corners.

Brian then inquired while placing his hand on Shane's chest and softly pressing his fist into Shane's chest, "Have you hunted any creatures outside of this trial?"

Shane experienced a brief flash of recollection during which his father's voice could be heard yelling in his ear. During this time, Shane's hand began to shake.

Glazed eyes looked at him pleadingly while his father said, "Be responsible, become a damn man."

Shane gritted his teeth for a few seconds while he observed the unusual kitchen and then continued looking around.

As soon as he realized that he had a stove underneath the area to light the fire, he exhaled deeply.

While his eyes burned with intensity, he said, "Yes, but not with Traps. Just my rifle and other firearms."

Brian slowly nodded before he asked, "What do you think of this place?"

Shane turned to look at Brian and said slowly, "It's like a decoy. A trap, but I don't know what kind."

Brian, after nodding, stepped away from the entrance and into what appeared to be the kitchen. He then added, "Well, if we sit in those chairs and they don't explode. It may be a trap to catch us."

Shane shifted his focus to the cooking area of the house. On the countertops and the table, there were a number of little containers, and other items were covered with rags.

In addition to that, there was a hint of stale food stench that was present throughout the place.

Turning to look at Brian, he said, "Or to lower your guard." Pointing to one of the chairs, he said, "look at the table. It's well set up. Don't you think that some things are done in a hurry and others are done badly on purpose?"

While doing so, Brian furrowed his brow briefly and scratched his chin. He maintained his silence while moving his head and indicating the direction of the stairs.
