Chen Yuwei stared unwaveringly at the children in the cot. They were already six months old. She'd done her best holding onto them for as long as she could, but she couldn't keep them anymore.
They'd be subjected to a life of cruelty if they remained with her. As much as she wanted her kids to never leave her side, she had no choice.
She'd rather they end up in an unknown family somewhere in the vast galaxy than remain with her and suffer untold horrors.
She sniffled as she rocked the cot gently. They looked so peaceful. Mommy's little puffy balls of paradise.
Her heart ached and her tears flowed endlessly. She stretched out her hands and held each on one arm.
She felt reluctant. Very reluctant. Why did she have to be the one to make this sacrifice? Why couldn't it be someone else? She was human too, why can't she be a little more selfish?
She kissed their faces repeatedly before laying them down in a small, intricately weaved, flower basket. She covered them with a blanket and looked out the window to the full moon.
"Soon, my babies. Soon mommy wouldn't have to worry about those people. Mommy would come find you. I'm sorry."
She jumped out of the window with the basket and rushed over to the orphanage opposite the inn. She'd been observing this orphanage for weeks and it seemed decent enough.
She placed the basket before the large metal doors and activated the bell with her gloved thumb. She'd messed up the AI surveillance with her spirit energy so the people inside would have no idea who placed them here.
She kissed her babies one more time before turning and leaving. She refused to witness the moment they were carried into those doors as she was afraid she would break down and take them back.
Immediately she was out of sight, the black clad figure from the forest rushed out with a child in a different basket.
He grabbed one of the children from the flower basket and replaced them with the sleeping child in his own basket.
Whilst he took the child, who was now awake, and placed in his own basket before also placing it a few feet away from the orphanage door.
He felt a bit guilty for separating the babies but he really had no choice. He used the fact that the babies could be adopted to anywhere and it might not necessarily be a good place, to console himself.
At least this way one of the kids was guaranteed a good life in the Wen family.
He activated the bell once more and when he heard footsteps, he hid himself in the shadows.
A young lady yawned as she opened the large doors a bit. The surveillance suddenly stopped working so she decided to be cautious when she heard the doorbell.
She peeked a little and when she saw two different baskets, she hurriedly opened the doors fully.
In the flower basket were two babies sleeping peacefully, twins she assumed, and beside their blanket was a note.
'Have them adopted together. Under no circumstance should they be separated.'
'....' The young lady was dumbfounded. Wasn't this mother being a little too arrogant? You dumped your own children in front of an orphanage and still have the guts to make demands?!
She yawned again and looked to the other less remarkable basket. It was just a child and he stared wide eyed at the ceiling. There was no note whatsoever.
The young lady nodded. At least this mother knew how to feel shame and didn't make any unnecessary demands.
She felt no pity and assumed the worst from both mothers because in this era, low class families and elites alike generally dumped their children in orphanages if they turned out to be talentless.
The elites, most especially, saw it as a way to be merciful as some would directly kill off the child they deemed as trash. Despicable! Were they supposed to be praised as being magnanimous?!
She stared at both baskets for a while and wondered if both mothers ran into each other as they placed their kids here.
It must've been a very awkward encounter.
She spent a lot of time replaying countless scenarios of the awkward encounter of the women she termed trashy mothers.
She'd seen too many abandoned children that she'd become immune to the sight and could even calmly make jokes about it.
The black clad figure watched calmly as the young lady grabbed both baskets and took them into the orphanage.
He sighed in relief. Now he had to rush over to the hospital and have madam adopt the little master before he was taken away by someone else.
Doing it this way would throw those old men off their backs and the little master could live peacefully.
His figure quickly flashed past and he was gone from the orphanage.
Three days later, he arrived at the Wen family mansion on Planet Xin. He'd gone to the hospital some days ago and realized that the madam was already on her way here, so he quickly rushed over.
He stared as she walked into the Wen family mansion with her family and quietly took note of the position of her room through the windows. When she went downstairs, he made his move.
Although he felt really low for being so sneaky, he had no choice. It would completely ruin their plans if the marshals' people discovered his connection to her.
He slipped into her room and placed a letter on her bedside table. Although paper was basically almost extinct in this era, he had to visit various antique shops to get this.
The electronic bracelets had a high chance of being hacked by blockers. He really couldn't risk it. The piece of paper on the bedside table read,
'Madam, I am one of general Xie's subordinates. I managed to save the little master although he was injured. I left him in an orphanage. I really hope Madam wouldn't mind going over to adopt the little master as this would throw the enemies off his little back...'
He went on to write the address of the orphanage in Planet Qiang and quietly slipped out.
