Two mistakes.
Their first mistake was to forget that they were currently facing a battle against Ajayka. Who would, in their right minds, forget the most important thing while in the middle of a fight? Only them. Then, that mistake led to their second mistake. They let their guard down in front of the enemy, and that ended regrettably.
It was too late to deflect Ajayka's attack towards Alvaro, although when she caught sight of the approaching strip of electric sparks heading their way, she tried to stop it with her wings, but apparently, Ajayka's lightning was too fast.
When it zoomed just inches away from her left cheek, she felt the thunderous vibrations from it, and the next thing she heard was the loud blast behind her.
The horrifying realization came in rather late—Alvaro got hit by the witch's lightning strip on his left shoulder!
