Was he still standing outside where she left him?
The thought made her shiver even though the temperature had started to rise and so had her skin. She had been so caught up in her own thoughts that she hadn't even considered the possibility that he might still be there, waiting for her.
'Why don't you step out and take a peek?' the devil on her shoulder advised and Eva bit her lip, feeling hesitant.
The mirror started to steam so she turned away from her worrying reflection and released a content moan as the steamy water soothed her shape. Eva closed her eyes and massaged the soap into her skin, inhaling the citrus scent with a calming breath. It smelled of him: the sea, smoke, and musk combined. She lathered her arms first, then her shapely chest and flat stomach, and then bent down to stroke the length of her legs.
This felt good. Like normality, and she basked in the sensations. She could feel her muscles easing and it was wonderful, relaxing enough that she allowed her ever-crowded mind to cease thinking if only to shield the memories of last night. If only to forget that someone she at first despised was now slowly easing his way into her heart, body, mind, and soul.
It took a bit more soap, but she let it all go and allowed herself to escape because she knew it would only get harder from here.
She could deal with him and everything that came her way. She wasn't going to run away like a damsel in distress because that wasn't her. And no damsel had ever managed to take revenge in the worst ways possible so that was an absolutely-not option.
Breathing out, she turned the tap down and walked toward the hook where her clothes were hanging along with two to three towels.
'Of course, they had to be black,' Eva rolled her eyes, her lips slightly curving without her notice.
Quickly drying herself, she pulled on his trousers and gulped at how they continued to fall from her hips. Grabbing the belt she had brought along with her, she managed to make them stable and once again regretted doing this stunt just to get on his nerves.
Sliding on his shirt, she did the buttons one by one and then looked at herself in the mirror,
"..."
Huffing at herself, she wiped away the fog and then looked at herself in his clothes.
She couldn't wait for his reaction, she thought giddily and slowly opened the door to steal a quick peek.
'Wait, where did he go?'
'Did he run away?!'
Stepping out, Eva patted her hair softly with the towel in her hand and continued to look around. She had no clue where he had gone off to but that made her feel relieved along with a tiny bit disappointed.
She didn't get to see his response but his leaving meant that he had finally opened that damned door. As a bonus, she got to keep his clothes!
'Only for going out disguised as a man if the occasion occurred.' she reminded herself since his clothes would help disguise her feminine scent from the outsiders. But Eva still hugged his clothes as she wrapped her arms around herself and padded across the wooden floor toward the door.
Pulling at the knob, she frowned when it didn't budge or open to let her out. She tried again and again but to no avail.
As Eva stood there, trapped inside his room, she couldn't help but wonder why he hadn't unlocked the door. What was he thinking? Why would he do something like this?
She considered the possibility that he was trying to teach her a lesson, to show her that she couldn't just walk away from him whenever she felt like it. But that didn't make any sense. Theo had never been the type to play mind games or seek revenge.
"..."
At least with her, he hadn't...
Eva racked her brain, trying to think of any other reason why he would lock her inside his room. But no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't come up with a single plausible explanation. Her subconscious sat blowing her bangs, offering no sort of help or advice to her and Eva felt like kicking open the door to show him that she could.
Nibbling on her bottom lip until it turned red, Eva tapped her foot impatiently against the floor. And that was when her demons slowly overcame her.
And suddenly nothing made sense anymore.
The muscles around her ribs cramped and felt like a cage two sizes too small that trapped her lungs. Gasping for air, she grabbed onto the wall for support and closed her eyes shut.
'He left you...'
He would never. Please leave...
'He locked you up just like they did.'
Theo would never!
'How do you know?'
Because I trust him. I never trusted them in the first place.
Struggling to keep her wobbly legs in check, she leaned back against the wall and tried to maintain her breathing.
In and out.
Inhale.
Exhale.
Licking her dry lips, she whimpered, feeling her throat dryer than ever and her heart set into complete panic mode. Choking on her own saliva, she closed her eyes again and tried to hold back the tears that were threatening to drown her inside them.
'You're alone...'
I am alone.
But... he's out there.
Tightening her hands into fists, she reminded herself that this wasn't Isabella's castle. She wasn't trapped in that wretched cage. She was free. He had given her the freedom to do whatever she wanted and go wherever she needed. Theo was the one who had broken her chains and got her out of there. He couldn't be the one to lock her up again.
'He's a liar...'
Eva shook her head. He got me out last time...
'But he isn't here...'
I can do it too if he can.
'But you're nothing...'
I am Eva. I'm the girl the Devil calls Birdy...
