The cup Beth was holding dropped to the ground immediately. She was caught off-guild. That wasn't what she was assuming he would say. It was even worse. She gasped and Din could see the shattered cup on the ground.

"Step away," Din said as Beth stooped down to pick up the broken pieces. "I'll have one of the maids clean things up for me. Come along with me." He walked her over to the couch and sat her down softly. 

Beth was still taken aback by what she had heard. Din had already married someone else. Of course, she'd told him to marry her and then divorce Jessie when he'd gotten the company. That had been the plan all along, but why was she now uneasy? 

Her hands were sweaty and quivering, and her legs were trembling. Din clasped her hands in his and smiled. He patted them gently, forcing her to look at him. "I assure you, I have no feelings for her."

"I understand." As she stared at him, Beth attempted a smile.
