Chapter 4 - the truth

Eloise had just finished her first class of the day. She had no idea what was discussed or what even happened during her class, because throughout the whole lecture her mind was elsewhere, playing that strange morning that she had just gone through over and over again.

She absent mindedly left the classroom once the lecture ended. She had a bit of time to spare before her next class so she decided to walk around campus.

Eloise's university was beautiful, it was the oldest campus and the most prestigious university in Plum. It was also huge, to walk through the whole of it would take a person an entire day. The weather was particularly peaceful, a contrast to the chaos of her day,but it made it a perfect day to take a stroll.

She loved to walk around campus alone, observing other students and guessing what was going on in their lives. Other people always fascinated Eloise. She was always so curious with how other people lived and behaved so differently from her. She wanted to take up psychology as her major in university but her parents insisted that business would be a better fit for her. So she was resigned to only studying people from a far instead of up close and personal.

While walking she noticed a couple fighting by a tree, she couldn't hear what they were saying but she could tell by their body language and facial expressions that they were both upset. She sighed 'I wished I had someone to actually fight with. Being invisible can have its perks but it has way too many downfalls.' She thought to herself.

Eloise was 21 and had never been in a relationship in her life. She didn't know why but guys never seemed to notice her, they would always see her as a friend but nothing more. An image popped in her head, of a man with black hair and jet black eyes. Adam.

He was probably the most gorgeous man she had ever laid her eyes on, but he was also by far the creepiest and most mysterious. She started replaying their conversation in her head, and the more she thought about it the more confused she got.

"Is he crazy or something??" She accidentally said out loud. As she said this she felt a breeze pass, "Who's crazy?" A voice behind her said. She turned around quickly to see who it was, but she lost her balance while turning. As she was about to hit the ground an arm caught her by the waist.

She looked up at who had caught her, and to her surprise it was adam. She stood up and broke out of his hold as soon as she realized what had happened. "Oh hi, it's you again!" Eloise said shyly.

"Yeah, hi again." Adam said as he smiled at her, revealing a dimple right next to it. Eloise felt her heart skip a beat. She pretended not to notice how his appearance was making her feel, "What a coincidence, are you a student here too?" She said, trying to sound as casual as possible, all the while trying not to stare at his physique for too long.

"Uh no not really," Adam said smirking, he was thinking of how to tell her who he really was. He had decided to shift back to earth to go and see Eloise, he had been alone in his apartment trying to think of what to do next for almost two hours. He figured he had to see Eloise again, maybe seeing her would give him an answer, or even an idea.

Now that he was standing in front of her again, he was still so confused with why he was sent to collect her soul. He studied her as she left her classroom, staying invisible, and she was just this timid and clumsy girl. She barely said hi to anyone in her class and almost tripped as she got out of the room. She amused Adam, he enjoyed watching her walk around campus staring at every person, and it confused him when he saw her pick up a random used plastic wrap off the floor to properly throw it into a trash can.

Most of the souls he was sent to pick up had done horrible things, they've stolen, conned and some have even murdered other humans. It was rare for him to see a human be so… gentle. He stared at her brown hazel eyes and messy hair, and she looked so innocent.

"So, why are you in my campus?" Eloise asked skeptic, "Are you a stalker??" Eloise asked, then slowly stepped back away from Adam. "No, I swear, I am not your stalker!" Adam said almost in a panic, he thought to himself however, technically wasn't it his job to stalk these humans before and after their death?

"I just wanted to check on you, I wasn't sure if you were hurt after what happened this morning." Adam said cautiously, as he said it he realized a part of it was true, he did want to check if she was okay. "Uhm, thanks I guess, but I'm fine," Eloise replied, "Actually, now that you're here, I've been wondering what you meant earlier. Why did you say that you saved me?" She asked.

Adam felt uncomfortable — a feeling he rarely ever felt. Should he come clean and tell her the truth?
