Chapter 5 - 5 - Time

"Alright, here's the deal Eloise," Adam started to say "Everything that happened this morning wasn't an accident." Adam said.

"What do you mean?" Eloise asked, confused. Adam's expression turned dark, "The truck stopping before it hit you, that wasn't exactly something that happened by chance. It was actually supposed to hit you" Adam said while staring into Eloise's eyes.

Eloise couldn't understand what Adam was trying to say, "How could you possibly know that?" Adam took a deep breath, ready to tell her everything. "I know because I'm a--" just then a loud bell sounded off. Eloise looked at her watch on her wrist, "That's the bell for class, can you meet me for lunch? I really can't be late." She hurriedly said, "Here hand me your phone I'll give you my number." She said to Adam. Being a demon, Adam obviously did not own a phone, "Why don't you just write it down, my phone's dead." He said. Eloise didn't question it and pulled out a small notebook out of her bag and scribbled her number on it then handed it to him.

"I'll see you later then!" Eloise said. She quickly walked away to her next class. Adam stood there and watched her as he left. At least that gave him time to think of how to tell her the truth, but it also meant he was losing at least an hour to fix this mess. Being a 300 year old demon, time had never been something he was conscious of. "This day is full of firsts that I'd rather not go through." Adam groaned.

As Adam was about to shift back into Brim, he felt a shift coming through. When he turned around a tall man with brown hair who looked to be in his twenties was standing directly behind him. He smiled at Adam, "Finally, I've been looking for you everywhere." The man said as he walked closer to Adam. It was his friend Noah, he and Noah started as demons at the same time and went through training camp together. They were the best of friends, and had gone through everything together.

Adam sighed, he loved Noah like a brother, but he was a stickler for rules and Adam wasn't sure if this was something he could share with him. He trusted Noah with his life, and it would be great to have someone to share this burden with.

"Hey," Adam waved back. "Yeah, I just wanted to check something out. How'd you find me?"

"Tracked you down, obviously." Noah said as he raised his wrist to show a black feather tattooed on it, the feather represented their bond. Not only were Noah and Adam best friends, but they were also bonded.

Being bonded to a fellow demon meant they were connected on another level. They could tell when the other had strong emotions or where they were. It was like being soulmates with someone, demons were paired up and had bonds so that they would always have some sort of protection.

"Right," Adam said, "did you need anything from me?" He asked. "I thought we were gonna hang out after your assignment! I set us up on a double date tonight with Alicia and Jesse!" Noah said as he threw an arm around Adam.

"Right, about that," Adam began to say. "No. Not again. You are not canceling again! You haven't gone out with anyone in 20 years. It's time to get out there man!" Noah exclaimed.

"Just reschedule please, I promise I'll go but I just can't tonight." Adam said. "You better have a good reason for canceling again." Noah said. At that moment Adam thought of the situation he was stuck in and felt anxious, Noah in turn felt it too. Adam and Noah shared a knowing look, "Did something happen?" Noah asked.

"Well…." Adam began to say, "We should shift back to my apartment. I'll explain everything there. Oh but first I have to buy a phone"

Meanwhile, Eloise had already arrived in her next class. She was always excited for this class because best friend Adrianna was in it too. When she got into the room she spotted Adrianna immediately and saw that she had saved a seat for her.

She walked towards Adrianna and sat down next to her, "Hey!!" Adrianna greeted, "I texted you like ten times today! Why haven't you replied to any?" Adrianna asked.

"Oh sorry," Eloise said as she checked her phone, sure enough she had ten unread messages from Adrianna, "Been a bit of a hectic day, I guess I forgot to check my phone." Eloise said as she frowned.

"Why what happened?" Adrianna asked, concerned for her friend. Eloise sighed, not knowing where to even begin, "So I almost died this morning…." Eloise started to recall.
