Chapter 16 - The Prideful Mage

"Saving people certainly deserved some recognition for their bravery, but other Warrior ranks might also violate the regulations if we overlook this situation. You will be punished accordingly," Sun Ting stated firmly. A smirk played on her lips as she liked the idea of being superior.

Shun didn't say a word. He knew what he had done was a mistake, but thinking about the punishment made him anxious. Especially since the Defender didn't accept those, who had violated their rules.

Yami glanced at Shun. He understood that Shun violated the rules and was right to punish him, but he didn't like how Sun Ting delivered her words. She reeks of excessive pride.

"Indeed, it was against the rules, but Shun saved many lives," Yami stepped up to defend Shun. After all, he was secretly involved as well.

Sun Ting snapped at Yami for butting into a conversation unrelated to him.

"And who are you?" Sun Ting asked. She was irritated at how Yami spoke out of nowhere.

"I'm Yin Ying, and Shun saved from a Raider who was about to eat me," Yami answered nonchalantly. He put an innocent face to play his character as a young student.

"Ying, stop it," Shun panicked and pulled Yami behind him, but Yami ignored his words.

"You act so arrogantly even though you arrived late. Many could have died if it wasn't for Shun," Yami stated the facts, making Sun Ting infuriated.

"He still violated the rules. Is it that hard to understand?" Sun Ting gritted her teeth upon answering.

"Heh," Yami tilted his head to the side. He was amused at Sun Ting's reaction and wanted to add fuel to the fire. "Then what should Shun do in that situation? Let the students die?"

Sun Ting was taken back by Yami's words. She never expected that someone would talk to her that way.

"That doesn't change the fact that he violated the rules. The Soul Vessels are not for trainees to play around with. They need permission from the Defender to use it." Sun Ting argued with a smirk on her face. She used the Defender base to win the argument.

"Why?" Yami asked. He was trying to get the pieces of information together and comprehend the whole issue with the vessel.

"It's simple. The Defender owns soul vessels, and not everyone is allowed to use them to their wishes."

"But, the soul vessels are Raider's technology," Yami stated while rubbing his chin. "They don't belong to this world. The Defender doesn't own them."

"You! Are you tainting the Defender's name!?" Sun Ting's voice raised. It was evident that she was pissed with Yami.

A smile crept over Yami's lips. He remembered the history of the Raider's attack and the Defender and decided to use it against Sun Ting. "Or you don't like other people are stronger than you?"

"What!?" Sun Ting yelled in disbelief. She was speechless as no words came out of her mouth to defend herself from Yami's accusations.

"Okay, that's enough," Peng Nui, Guardian Squad Marksman, stepped between them. He had just arrived after inspecting the damages and the soul beast's body. "Stop arguing. I had already called the workers, who will arrive soon for the clean-up. Let's go home."

"Nui!" Sun Ting called him. She thought he would be on her side and helped her push the idea of the punishment.

"Ting, I get what you're coming from, but his punishment will depend on the higher-ups," Peng Nui stated and looked at their leader. "Isn't that right, Captain?"

Ma Song sighed and went to Shun. "Our Squad will report about this matter. Please go to the base today."

"Yes, I will," Shun nodded his head in understanding. Somehow, he felt relieved after the arguments had stopped.

"Good job defending the students against the Raider." Ma Song winked at Shun and left the school. His squad followed him and went to the base.

"Ahhh," Shun sighed loudly and rubbed his face to relieve stress.

"Are you going to the base now?" Yami asked. He was interested in the Defender's base since that would be the primary connection toward his sister.

"Ah, yes, but I need to get my stuff first," Shun stated and ran to the classroom, leaving Yami behind.

Yami shrugged and planned to wait for him. He opened his inventory and clicked the wheel spin, and took his time looking over the prizes.

"Different amount of money... a house!?" Yami exclaimed upon seeing one of the grand prizes on the wheel. "I badly needed a house!"

Yami immediately spun the wheel and hoped he would get the house even if he would starve for days.

"Ha!" Yami facepalmed upon seeing what he got. A stack of paper money dropped into his hand. He smelled it before putting it in his pocket. "Not so bad. It's money, after all."

"Ying..." Shun called him with a look of disbelief. "Don't wave that amount of money in public! Someone will take interest."

"I know," Yami answered with a laugh as he had already experienced what Shun warned him about.

"I will go to the base now. I'll see you in school tomorrow," Shun waved and was about to leave when Yami pulled him back a bit too much.

"I will come with you."

"Hah," Shun looked around before pulling Yami to the side. "They might be suspicious if you come with me and you just had a fight with a Legend rank Combatant."

"That girl is prideful. I can't stand people like that, especially when they did nothing," Yami argued and crossed his arms. He knew that he didn't do anything terrible in the first place.

"But I also did nothing. You are the one who killed the Raiders; all I did was nearly die," Shun looked down and felt pity for himself for being weak and couldn't give a single blow of damage to the Raider.

"What do you mean? You saved the remaining students inside, and I only helped you defeat the Raider. Don't look down too much on yourself, Shun."
