Chapter 19 - The Grandmother

"Ying! You're here," Shun exclaimed when he saw Yami waving at him. "What are you doing here?"

Yami tilted his head. "Am I not supposed to be here?"

"That's not-" Shun paused and sighed. He looked at the outcome of the sudden attack. "This place is no longer safe for a while until those buildings are repaired."

"Yeah," Yami agreed. Even he could say the same thing.

"It's been years since something like this happened again," Shun muttered lowly. He was referring to the first attack of the Raiders.

"And it will happen again if your base doesn't do anything about it," Yami commented and glanced at the gigantic building from afar. "It will test how great the Defender base is."

"If you think you can run away because of what happened, you're wrong," Sun Ting stated with arms crossed over her chest while walking toward the two men.

"I've told you before, I don't plan to run away," Shun furrowed his eyebrows and transformed back into his original body.

"You did great there," Yami complimented and gave a thumbs up to Sun Ting.

"I didn't kill the Raider all by myself. Someone helped me, and I won't take all the credit," Sun Ting stated before turning around and starting to walk away.

Yami's lips curled into a smile. He thought Sun Ting would take all the credit for herself since she had great pride in her rank and power.

"Let's go," Sun Ting said and gestured for Shun to follow her since they still needed to go to the Defender base. "As for you, stay here and go home. You are not allowed to come inside the base."

"Hah," Yami looked at Shun. They talked earlier that he would go with him to the base, but the plans had changed because of Sun Ting.

"Only those who worked in the Defender can enter the base," Sun Ting added before walking away.

"I'm sorry, Ying," Shun spoke softly before leaving Yami on-site and following Sun Ting.

Yami looked at their retreating figure. He made sure that they were distant enough before he started walking. After all, he lived in the forbidden area.

As they got closer to the barrier, Yami hid in one of the buildings and saw them entering a small facility outside the barrier using the vessel as a key.

Yami waited for them to be gone before leaving his hiding spot. "So this is one of their entrances to the base."

The facility was in a greyish tone and looked like a regular old building connected to the barrier.

Yami touched the cold surface and looked for any button that he could manually press to open the door, but there were none.

In the end, Yami gave up, climbed the barrier, and entered the forbidden area. He searched for a decent house to stay in for the night and checked his status.

"I'm at level 4. I only need a couple of exp before reaching level 5," Yami muttered while scanning his screen for the new skills he had unlocked.

"Hmm," Yami hummed upon reading the description of the second skill. He raised his hand forward and activated the skill.

A rectangular shield appeared in front of Yami. Covering most of his upper body.

"Let's try something else," he muttered and thought of a heart-shaped shield. Instantly, the shield molded into a new shape.

Yami ran forward, and the shield followed his movement whenever he went, making him extremely satisfied.

"Interesting, this skill is essential," Yami muttered and deactivated the skill. "But, did I unlock this soul because I used Shun's vessel?"

Yami was confused since he thought the only way to get soul talents was from the quest reward, but he had unlocked it after using Shun's vessel.

He spread out the screens containing the Tank soul's information, reread the data, and made sure to use the skills correctly.

"I should do another quest to become level 5 and unlock my Assassin soul's second skill," Yamu muttered and stretched his body.

It was already 8:00 in the evening when Yami decided to stroll the forbidden area for the possibility of finding a portal to fight a soul beast and gain more exp.

Since there were abnormal portals that kept appearing everywhere. Most Combatants scattered around the city and left the forbidden area empty since there was no active portal at that time.

Yami began experimenting with his skills to learn combos best suited to the battles.

[SHADOW SHIFT IS ACTIVATING]

[CHARGE OF MADNESS IS ACTIVATING]

Using teleportation and dashing in a one-second gap creates a huge advantage in speed to attack, evade, and escape.

"All I need now is an offensive skill for a perfect combo," Yami muttered while sitting on one of the broken cement.

Yami was looking through his inventory when his stomach growled in hunger.

"Ah, I forgot to eat dinner," Yami hopped down and went outside the barrier to find the nearest opened convenience store.

After 15 minutes of walking, Yami saw an old mart. He went inside, checked some snacks, and bought those that had caught his interest.

Yami placed himself in the corner after reheating his noodles when he saw a group of men outside. They were cornering an old woman who had her wallet in hand.

Those men immediately left after they took her wallet with huge smiles.

Yami thought she was their grandmother, but the old woman fell to the ground and cried. At the same time, a notification appeared on his screen.
