Chereads / The Knowledger / Chapter 2 - Day 1

Chapter 2 - Day 1

My head hurts, my hands are tied, and I can't see jackshit. Kroft thought to himself as he wiggled his fingers around the coarse rope wound around his wrists. You think this will hold me? You idiots I have the experience of an entire life of theft. Getting out of being bound is easy.

With a little jiggle and a little wiggle Kroft was out of the rope. He undid his blind fold and surveyed his surroundings. He was in the back of a wagon, it was empty and damp. Feeling his scalp he understood the existence of dried blood present.

To knock me out in one hit even if he was using a hilt of the sword. That's impressive. These people are dangerous. I need to be careful. Kroft reminded himself. Picking up the rope that once bound him, Kroft moved to the back of the wagon to the flap opening. That's when he noticed the noise from outside the wagon.

*Clank* *Clank* GRRRRRRR

Fighting? Kroft questioned.

He lightly pulled open the flap and saw the warfare of the outside world. No one was guarding the wagon like he thought they would be, instead there was a body laying 10 meters in front of the open wagon flap. Farther away Kroft could see the fighting of the bandits that had captured him. They were in a bloodied battle with wolves and they were outnumbered 1 to 2. The woman Rem was standing in the back spamming arrows at the flanking wolves that tried to gain the advantage. Benny along with 4 others were in front of her fighting the wolves up front. They were evenly matched yet Kroft noticed that a large wolf was pushing through the ranks of the already present wolves.

"Rip those guys, that's obviously a big boss guy and they are not going to be able to beat it."

I already know how this is going to go, Kroft thought to himself as he recalled the fantasy stories that he used to enchant himself with back in his old world.

"Unless some magical hero arrives and stops that big bad wolf there's no way they're getting out of here."

This isn't some fantasy story and there is no way in hell that anyone would help some jackass bandits like those people.

Kroft hopped off the wagon not caring about the eventual demise of his captors. He walked over to the dead man and looked at the fresh corpse. There were deep bites marked into the side of his head.

"Ouch buddy." Kroft muttered under his breath, "Well, you were apart of them so you definitely deserved it though." Kroft grabbed onto the coat of the man and wrapped it around his body. He went through his pockets and then took the dagger from the ground left behind from the desperate struggle. He took one last look at the people behind him struggling to survive and saw that it was only Benny and Rem left. He turned around and without a second look back he wandered away.

(At the same time)

"Rem there are too many of them!" shouted Benny as he swung his sword and decapitated another wolf before him.

"No shit dumbass!" screamed Rem in response to Benny as she took out her last arrow. Then at that moment all the wolves took a step back. A wolf twice the size of the others took a step forward and howled loudly.

"This must be their pack leader!" Rem exhaled as she took aim at the giant wolf before her.

"Oh great..." Benny sighed. Benny dashed forward and swung his sword, the giant wolf headbutted Benny's shoulder and pushed him to the ground. He picked up his paw and swung it down, instantly killing Benny. Rem looked on in fear and shot her last arrow. The arrow found its mark and embedded itself in the left eye of the giant wolf. The giant wolf howled in pain and rushed towards Rem in an enraged fury.

"Might as well go out with a bang." Rem responses despairingly as she pulls out a stick and lights a match.

"Go to hell bastard! she says as she puts the lit match onto the dynamite stick. She was too slow though and the wolf arrived before her and ripped off the arm with her match.

"ARHHHHHH" Rem screamed in agony. The wolf didn't hesitate though and it chomped down right through the entire top right of her head. Blood, brains, tissue, and general gore splattered everywhere ending the life of the bandit Rem.

Kroft ran. He ran as fast as he could as he heard the howls of wolves behind when sprinting on the dusty dirt road. I'm almost there he thought to himself, he now knew of a small settlement to the east of where he was, a little town called Ram. The boy of the past had never been there before, but he knew of the surrounding areas and understood that it was a small farm town.

"There... it... is!" Kroft said through pantings. The small town, no not even a town, the village of Ram. He ran down a hill and heard the howls of the deadly wolves fade into the distance as he approached the village. He caught his breath and arrived before the village's crudely crafted wooden wall and gate. Looking around he called out before the gate, "Hello!?"

"HELLO!?" Kroft raised his voice as he tried to sneak a peek through the gate. The gate unlocked and a burly man pushed open the wooden gate.

"You're here early, usually travelers don't move during the night because of the wolves. Not to mention arrive at the village at 5 in the morning." the burly man told Kroft.

"No time to lose. I'm always on the clock y'know. Hahahaha." Kroft joked as he put on a smile in front of the village guard.

" Well come on in, there's only one inn around here called the Bannered Bare. Griselda runs it, so if you need to get a meal head on over there." The burly village guard says to him as he ushered in Kroft. After thanking the guard he drifted over to the inn and met the lady Griselda inside. She was a young girl probably around 14 who was in charge of the place. When Kroft opened the door the place was barren and not a soul in sight. She hurriedly rushed over to Kroft and greeted him.

"Hello esteemed guest, what could I serve you?" Griselda asked.

"How much is a room?" Kroft asked as he checked the pocket of the coat that he was wearing. There were 6 copper pieces in the coat which obviously didn't seem like very much.

"A room is 3 coppers a night or 6 for 3 nights!" Griselda excitedly answered.

"I just need a room for a night please." responded Kroft, "Does that include meals?"

"Yes of course sir!" Griselda told. Kroft relaxed and allowed her to lead him to his room. It was a small room with a stable built bed and a little red rug inside. Kroft took off his coat and looked at his hands, in his palm was the handle of a dagger. The dagger he took from the corpse of the bandit.

"Seems like I'm going to have to do a lot of different things then what I'm used to from the past in this place."

By the way, I knew I was young but damn, he thought as he looked at his reflection in the metallic luster of the dagger.

"Who would have thought I'd be 14."

With that last statement Kroft layed down on the bed finally putting an end to the crazy experience which was his first day in this new world.
