Chapter 8 - Mr. Wine

A man entered a building that couldn't be filled with hundreds of people in it. After walking forward to a room labeled as "Check In" the man affixed before a middle aged woman. This man was Kroft Adrich.

"Hello ma'am, my name's Kroft Aldrich. I was told by Mr. Renen that I needed to choose a teacher and also take a beginning class."

The woman who had an ID tag that read Velma Strikes looked up from the documents she was writing upon and instructed Kroft.

"A new student huh? Well, you'll need to choose a teacher from a list I'll give you in a few moments, but the next beginners course taking place will be in a few days when another three new students are due to arrive. Since I haven't heard about you, you must be an unexpected enrollment. It's only expected that you will have to wait until then to take your course."

Ms. Strikes went beneath her desk and pulled out a large booklet of paper.

"Here are the names of all the teachers you will be able to choose from. The way it works is that students will be mentored by a professor, now whether or not you have others with you is up to the professor and how many apprentices they have. This booklet has a description of what the teachers will be able to teach you. Please look through it carefully as you will not be able to choose a different mentor after having chosen the first one."

Ms. Strikes handed the booklet over to Kroft and he opened it up immediately. He made it seem as though he was skimming through the pages at first just to see how it was formatted but in reality he scanned over and memorized the entire booklet in mere moments. Reviewing the wide range of teachers in his head Kroft was amazed at how many professionals in magic there were in just one academy. He was bamboozled that so many people had an in depth grasp of magic when just two and a half millenniums ago no one even believed that it existed. Putting those thoughts aside he looked at a certain teacher. Her name was Azrael Ross. The description given about the subjects that she could teach were Intermediate, Adept, and Expert Darkness comprehension, life extension, and ________. The thing that caught his eye was the redacted information, this same thing occurred with a few other teachers that he recorded. Along with that, Azrael Ross was the only teacher with life extension as a teachable subject. It piqued Krofts interests and so he of course asked about Azrael.

"Excuse me, why is there just a blank on the end of the information which Ms. Ross can teach?"

"Oh, I forgot to tell you about that, when a Mentor wants to gain an apprentice, not just a student, but an actual apprentice, they will share their studies with them which is usually classified. They put a redacted subject in their description so that people know that. Even if you become a student of that teacher, it doesn't mean they will accept you as an apprentice so there's no guarantee that you will actually be allowed to know the information on their studies."

To be able to grasp classified information about a professor's work would be amazing, is what Kroft thought to himself. I need to be able to get into Azrael's class and become her apprentice. While I'm doing that it wouldn't hurt to learn how to extend my life or study a certain type of magic.

Kroft handed the booklet back to Ms. Strikes and made his decision clear.

"I would like to become a student of Ms. Ross." Kroft said clearly.

"Ms. Ross? That's good, she's been needing a new student after she killed the last of hers in her experiments."

"So, she doesn't have any right now?"

"No she doesn't."

Although Kroft disliked the idea of becoming a guinea pig for some crazy magician, he was sure that he might be able to squeeze his way out of any deathly experiment if the time comes. Plus the benefits of being able to find out about Azrael's studies were very enticing.

"You of course won't be able to go to Ms. Ross until after you attend the beginner class. No teacher can teach you if it turns out that you can't even grasp the very basics of magic."

The conversation ended and Kroft left the office with a few days of time to spare. Until he attended the beginners class he couldn't attend his actual teachings, so he needed to find something to fill the time, and he had just the right idea about what to do. He walked across campus and arrived at one of, if not the largest building in the entire academy. This was of course the library and finally Kroft was going to be able to do what he wanted to do for the longest time, read.

The few days that Kroft had to wait for in order to attend his beginners class passed in a flash. He spent his entire time in the library. The only times he left were to head to the cafeteria in order to eat. Three days and three nights all spent in the library and yet he still didn't leave a scratch in the amount of books that there were. With Krofts ability he was able to read hundreds of books in dozens of minutes. The amount of knowledge he absorbed in just those three days was more than most people would be able to comprehend in their entire lifetime. The information that he gained was a combination of recent history and politics along with government workings of the nations of the world. Since Kroft wasn't officially accepted into the school as he hasn't taken an aptitude test to determine if he has the talent needed in order to develop into a Magician, a large section of the library was off limits to him. Finally returning to Ms. Strikes, Kroft was instructed to head into a small classroom near her office. When arriving inside he took notice of 3 other people already inside waiting patiently. They were seated in desks near each other and looked over at Kroft when he entered through the doorway. The three children looked to be around the same age as Kroft, but unlike him they gave off an air of nobility. Instantly he inferred that they must be from a wealthy family and have a great backing based on their clothes, but also obviously if they were able to get into an academy. The group was made up of two boys and a girl. The girl sat silently by herself as the boys started to talk about Kroft.

"Who is this guy?" a boy with a chubby figure along with short blonde hair said to the other.

The second boy, tall, tanned, and skinny replied back to his friend in a snarky tone. "He must be the other kid who the secretary told us about. He doesn't look like he belongs here though, maybe he's just a janitor that wandered in by accident."

Intending to reply back to this in order to stop the obvious impending rivalry that was attempting to develop, Kroft took a step forward only to be interrupted by a man who walked into the room from behind him.

"Everyone take your seats! We shall start off with an amplitude test to see which one of you rats need to be kicked out." The man who looked to be slightly past middle age walked past Kroft to the front of the room. He was wearing an all gray robe, with a mask of pure white covering his eyes. Not planning to be a pester, Kroft quickly seated himself and listened to the man in the front of the room.

"Until your talent is proven, you shan't have the privilege of knowing my name. When it is decided whether or not you are a useless mutt then you shall be allowed to hear it." The teacher proclaimed loudly. He pulled out a white crystal the side of an adult male hand and placed it on the table in front of him. He pointed to a tall skinny boy in front of him and beckoned him over, then instructed the rest of the students into the hallway, telling them not to make a sound. After waiting for a few minutes in the hallway, the chubby blonde haired boy was called in and then the quiet girl after him. Lastly Kroft himself was called into the classroom and was told to place his hand upon the crystal. He could feel his stomach turn as excitement boiled up inside of him. The man demanded that Kroft closed his eyes and so he complied. When he did he felt his hand grow warm, he peeked open his eyes and saw a void of blackness all around him.

What is this place, Kroft thought to himself. This is definitely foreign to be and yet I feel quite comfortable surrounded in this darkness.

In the distance Kroft noticed a light that seemed to have developed by itself, he turned towards it and then observed as a blast of red spread around the distance enveloping the space around his darkness. The blast felt comfortable as if it was connected with the darkness around him. Wanting to stay to see what else might happen Kroft was drastically disappointed because the next second he blinked he found himself back in front of the desk with the middle aged man.

"Not bad, you have a mentality of 6. What did you see when he closed your eyes?"

"Uh, there was a video of black and then a blast of red that surrounded it."

"Only red and black? Are you sure?"

"Yes I looked around quite thoroughly, there was only the black and red around me."

"That's strange, usually people have multiple amplitudes more than two with it being mixed quite variable, tough luck kid looks like you will only be proficient in training fire and darkness."

"Mentality, aptitude?"

"Yes your mentality is a measurement of your capability and can help you humongously when developing yourself as a magician, the minimum to become one is 5, while the average person can't even achieve 1. While amplitude is the area which you naturally are aligned with. There are 6 basic aptitudes, Light, dark, fire, water, earth, and air. No matter how hard you focus on an aptitude you will never be able to grow it and will fail unless you develop the amplitudes which you are most proficient in. Most magicians have their amplitudes split into 3 major categories, like earth, wind, and fire, but you only have dark and fire which is unfortunate."

"Oh." Kroft sighed lightly, he was thinking that he was starting off with a disadvantage if he can only focus on two areas to develop while others have 3.

"Luckily though, you have a mentality of 6 which means you are qualified to attend Doof Academy and train to become a Magician."

Kroft continued to stare at the red crystal that was placed on the table until the middle aged man picked it up and placed it into his robe.

"Now then, as you officially aren't a sad sack of talentless shit you shall be honored to hear my name. You may call me Mr. Wine."

Kroft stood up and performed a bow of respect, he learned from his time in the library that the greatest sign of respect other than kneeling is to bow in this world. Mr. Wine, seemingly satisfied, nodded his head and then called in the rest of the students from outside of the hallway. He told them to take their seats and then congratulated them for passing the aptitude test.

"Now then we shall begin your first learning of magic, the basics."
