Chereads / The Immortal Duan Cai / Chapter 28 - Chapter 27

Chapter 28 - Chapter 27

After spending the time to talk to Leon about Bullet and what they had found out during the day he slowly walked his way back to his room. Tonight he did not whisper, nor did he sing which everyone in the mansion felt was strange. It was a nightly thing for Duan Cai to gift the Inferno Nexus with his heavenly tune before bed, but for once he was terribly quiet on his way to bed. Some people wondered if he was upset about something while others just did their best to remain out of the conversations and ignore it to the best of their ability.

As soon as Duan Cai entered his room he shut the door and placed his hand to his head. He hated using his personal brand to bind other souls to him. It brought back terrible memories of his home world when he was a god he had endless amounts of people who would beg him, plead him, some would even be willing to offer him things to the point they were willing to give up their own family members to him to be branded under a god. It made him feel sick for many reasons and now that he was gaining mortal emotions it made him feel all the more sick to remember it all.

Even if he had been without mortal emotions he still did not care for branding others. The sole reason of a brand was that the god would gain the knowledge and emotions from those branded as well as the one branded would gain spiritual gifts from the god who branded them. For Duan Cai he had never gained emotions from anyone he branded due to a condition he had while he was a god that left him an emotionless bottom pit. Any emotions that he was suppose to gain from his followers had simply been swallowed up by some black hole inside of him that left even other gods terribly confused for him. For Duan Cai none of that mattered to him, however. It was the knowledge that he hated the most.

The more people he bound to his soul the more memories and knowledge would flood him and it was not a painless binding. There was not many gods who would easily bind someone to them because of the dangerous and painful drawbacks. To a god they would be feeding the one combined to their soul with their very soul themself. When it came to his brand there was no take in soul combining without giving in return. In return for forcing Bullet under his brand so that he could take the knowledge Bullet held from the Kaen sect to protect those under him without them being aware he had given up a part of his own soul that had unknowingly to Bullet extended the man's very life and pushed his cultivation to the next stage.

Walking over to his bed he sat laid down on it and thought back over his action and wondered if he had done the right thing. At the time the man's will to live had just fascinated him so much that he could not help himself taking an interest in seeing a mortal with such a powerful force like that. There was also those under him that he was strangely gaining a desire to protect which puzzled him and so he had acted on impulse at the time.

A dog? Hah.. I might have called him that but what the hell have I done? He thought to himself as he placed his arm over his forehead and sighed heavily.

His body felt really weak as his mind was still processing everything from Bullet from the very memories the man could no longer recall himself such as his childhood to the very moment the man screamed in pain from the brand being forcefully placed on his soul. Every memory and every emotion throughout the man's life flooded through Duan Cai like a vast sea that made his blood and body run cold. Gritting his teeth tightly shut he tried his hardest to refrain from making noise as the pain surged throughout his body. During the day he had held on as long as he could to suppress the soul converging, but if he did not let them all converge into his own mind he would suffer a backlash later.

"Sir, are you alright?" A voice came through the door but Duan Cai was in too much pain to tell who it was. Was it man? Was it woman? His vision was blurring and his mind was going blank as flashes of memories kept flooding so fast and painfully that he could not make out anything going on in his own room.

"Duan Cai! Duan Cai!" A voice called out to him but it felt like it was miles away. He could feel his body over heating as he tried to get up and respond to the voice. His body quickly fell to the floor and he was certain he knocked something over while catching the glimpse of his door being kicked open by Leon. As blurry as his vision was it was hard to not know who he was by the way his aura was sparking out like fireworks from breaking the door down.

That night Duan Cai went to his room in silence Leon had sensed something was wrong so he had paced the hallways to keep watch. As long as he had been around the boy he had grown accustomed to his every action and could easily sense that something seemed off about him. The entire mansion had noticed the chance so it was hard for him to not be aware when he was the closest one around Duan Cai all the time.

"Sir, are you alright?" Lester asked while standing near Duan Cai's door.

Leon was not surprised to find Lester planning to stay in a guest room because their day had been long and with Lester working throughout the underworld it was hard for him to come and go from his own sect since they were against being involved in such activities. The only thing that bothered him was finding Lester near his boss's room so late at night.

"What are you-?" Leon was going to ask what he was doing outside Duan Cai's door shouting when a sudden rumbling growl came from inside the room. They had both heard Duan Cai growl before with a beastly sound, but when it came to the sounds he was currently making it sounded more like a beast dying in pain.

"He's been doing that for a while, but he doesn't respond when called.." Lester said with a quiet tone that was filled with worry for Duan Cai on the other side of the door. It was not his mansion so he was unsure of what to do in such a situation. He would sometimes stay in a guest room, but he had never experienced such a situation before.

"Duan Cai! Duan Cai!" Leon shouted as he slammed his fist against the door fiercely trying to get Duan Cai's attention to no avail. Sudden noises like someone knocking things over while painfully growling in pain started to sound through the door making them both more paranoid of the situation.

"Step back!" Leon shouted at Lester as his fiery aura burst from his body and he launched a kick at the door breaking it off the frame.

As they both rushed into the room with Leon in front he could hear Lester gasping from behind as a feeble and weak Duan Cai was struggling to his feet. It looked like sweat was pouring from him like he was burning up. They could see his body shaking forcefully as if he was about to have a seizure at any given second. Leon rushed forward as he could see Duan Cai's body about to give away at any moment, but before he could manage to burst forward his body was already falling straight for the floor unconscious.
