'Once I grow up I'm going to buy you a castle on the moon', said June to her mother when she was a child. She knew nothing back then. In her world growing up meant to achieve any dream.
'Don't ever grow up June', cried his mother.
At that moment she didn't understand her mother's sadness. Growing up must be fun, you would be able to do whatever you wanted, or at least she thought so.
The sound of broken glass took June back to earth. A glass of wine hit the wooden floor, the red liquid stained it as if it was blood.
June clenched her teeth. She hadn't studied all her life to end up there. Truth is she was working for the sake of her sick mother.
"What are you waiting for!" grunted a wicked woman with thin and curved eyebrows. She looked like the villain of a movie. "Don't you get paid for cleaning!"
June placed the bedsheets on her arms on the bed, she kneeled and picked up the pieces of glass on the floor. Thanks to the cruel villainess she would have to scrub the stain for hours as cinderella.
It was already late when the stain finally disappeared a little. She cleaned the sweat on her face with the back of her hand. June stood up. Her break had finished long ago. She sighed. With both hands, she took the white dirty blankets and replaced them.
She left the room but didn't look back. In the past she enjoyed looking at the luxury room with dreamy eyes. Time for dreaming was over, the hotel rooms wouldn't clean themselves.
She never imagined such life when she decided to work abroad. After three months of working hope left her body. June ran down the staircases, using the elevator was the best option but she was afraid of closed places.
The sound of her quick footsteps echoed in the walls of the hotel. The rustic style got the attention of many millionaires. Millionaires were a pain in the ass to work with, the majority looked like villains took from a horror movie.
June slowed down when she reached the cleaning room.
"There you are!" shouted a young girl from afar. "I was looking for you."
It was Lisa, her boss. She walked to June, her arms crossed.
"I'm sorry…"
"Save it!" Lisa interrupted her, "The event is about to start. You need to change."
June didn't move, she was trying to process her boss' words. Her eyes widened when she remembered she had to work as a waitress at the event hall. On that day the millionaires gathered to talk about their amazing lifes.
"I understand", said June, throwing the blankets onto a nearby basket.
Lisa rolled her eyes.
At the changing room June picked up a black dress and put it on, then she did a quick make up. She wished the day would finish soon.
The doors opened at five o'clock. The hall filled with women wearing expensive jewelry, men wore black, blue and gray suits.
For a long time people stood on the floor chatting and greeting their friends. June tried to be thankful for her job; she wouldn't be working there if it was not for her mother's best friend. Besides, he helped her with expenses in the first month.
After half an hour the guests sat down. That was the waiter's calling. At the same time the waiters filled in the trays with wine glasses. The second group of waiters approached the kitchen to pick up the snacks. June worked for the babarege group.
The waiters placed the wine glasses in front of the guests. June worked as a robot, every time she emptied a tray she moved to fill it up again. From the corner of her eye she spotted a young man looking at her. It was her friend Carl. They had made a bet before; whoever filled more tables would win. June shook her head, today was not a good day.
The waiters forgot one table at the back. As usual June was perceptive to every detail. She got close to the table but soon regretted it. The cruel villainess sat there. She wore a khaki dress along with luxury jewelry, her pointy eyebrows could take out an eye. In a different situation June would have laughed.
At the table was another young woman, and two elder men. Not wasting more time, June delivered the drinks; however, when she reached the villainess her feet hit one of the table's legs. June lost her balance, the wine glass in the tray fell down in slow motion.
"Ah! ...."
The villainess looked at her dress in dismay. The red liquid slipped down her dress. June felt dizzy. It was over.
"Stupid girl!" cried the villainess.
"I... I'm sorry", apologized June, "It was an accident."
The villainess greeted her teeth . "Where's your boss? I'll make sure you get fired right now.
June turned pale. She could not lose her job, her mother needed her. All of a sudden, one of the men at the table started to laugh. The people at the table stared at him, puzzled. His noisy laugh made the other guests look at him as well.
"Ha.... ha....!" The man stood up. "I haven't laughed like this in a while. Antonia, don't be ridiculous. Look at her, she is just a child."
".... I'm twenty three!" June covered her mouth. 'What had she just said?'
The man got close to her and looked her up and down from head to toe. For a strange reason she didn't feel harassed. The man had several white hairs, his eyes shone with kindness.
"What's your name?" he asked.
"June...."
He smiled. "You have an interesting face, but beautiful I dare say."
June blushed. There were no bad intentions in his words.
"I'm not from the UK", she admitted.
"Is that so? ...." The man scratched his chin. "June, I would like to talk to you about business.... Please, leave the table" , he said to the others.
The villainess growled. The younger woman and the man looked at each other confused, but they left the table. The villainess was the last one in leaving, before disappearing she threw a killing look in her direction.
"Please, enjoy the party!" shouted the man at the guests who were looking at them as if he was the party main star.
The music filled the hall. Every guest shot curious looks at them, but no one dared to get close. The elder man gestured for June to sit down. June had to accept his request, afterall he seemed to be an important man.
"I like you", said the old man buntly.
June opened her eyes. 'Is he crazy!'
The man laughed. "Don't get me wrong. I like honest people. Besides, this man is too old for such things."
She relaxed her shoulders at those words.
"Do you know who I am?"
June shook her head.
"My name is Philip Firestorm….."
Philip Firestorm. It was a familiar name. Two seconds later she remembered. Philip Firestorm was the owner of the hotel, not just that, he was the owner of the biggest hotel company set in England, Spain and South Korea. June felt a cold shiver down her back.
"I'm pleased to meet you." June extended a hand, Mr Firestorm shook her hand firmly.
Her heart was beating fast. Tons of ideas were crossing her head, in particular the idea that she was about to be fired. If he didn't fire her, her boss would fire her the next day in the morning.
"I want to make an offer to you", said Mr. Firestorm, taking a sip of his wine. June swallowed.
"Please, marry my son…..."
"... What?" June choked. "Are you crazy, sir?"
The man laughed and hit the table with both hands. The music was loud, no one paid attention to them anymore. In her short life June had never met such a strange millionaire.
"It's fun to mess up with the young." He dried a tear with his index finger. "I'm just making fun of you. Thou, I would like to admit: I would love to see my son married to you.
June began to lose her temper. She hated people who treated her as a toy. If it was not for her mother, she would have already taken revenge against them.
"Just tell me what you want!" she cried, forgetting her manners.
Mr. Firestorm fixed his tie. "At last."
She frowned without even realizing it.
"From now on you'll be my assistant. The payment will be much better than the one you have as a waitress. So... I will not accept no as a response."
She doubted him. He had already played a joke on her; she had zero experience, he could not be serious.
June waited for his laugh, but the man never laughed. His face was firm.
Mr. Firestorm extended a hand for June to close the deal. If it was not a joke, she could not miss the opportunity; on the other hand, the man inspired trust. She prayed she was not making a mistake, then she shook his hand.
