Chapter 2 - The Egg Seller

Ninin was a little girl. She lived only with his mother because his father had died. As a poor family her mother had to work hard. Ninin's mother works as a laundress for their neighbor. Althought poor, her mother never told Ninin to find money. "Be calm, Nin. Think your lesson so you become a smart girl," said her mother.

But Ninin do not bear to see her mother. "My mother works hard everyday and I do nothing after have my school. I must help her to get money," said Ninin to herself, "But what I must to do?" Thankfully, there was a herbalist who kindly to her. The herbalist also sold chicken eggs and Ninin was entrusted to sell her chicken eggs.

"If the eggs are sold, you will get money," said the herbalist. At first, Ninin only sold some chicken eggs. However, after she knew the seriousness of Ninin, the herbalist increased the number of eggs. Ninin surrounding villages to sell her eggs. "Eggs! Eggs!" shouted Ninin. She was happy if there were many women who should make cakes. Making cakes need lots of eggs so her eggs sold out faster. Ninin saved the profit.

"Do not push yourself, Ninin," said her mother.

Ninin said, "But I am happy to do it, Mom. To be egg seller is not hard."

Her mother advised, "Be careful! If you fall down, all of your eggs will break."

One day a man called Ninin and said, "May you sell egg duck? To sell duck egg is more profitable. You can get more money." The man persuaded Ninin. The man also showed his duck eggs. But Ninin wondered because the color of his duck eggs was more blue than a normally duck egg. "You can sell eight hundred rupiahs for each egg. Then, two hundred rupiahs for you and six hundred rupiahs for me."

"I can not sell duck eggs. I must sell my chicken eggs. If there are big number of eggs, I can not carry them," said Ninin. She hesitated. The man was true. It was profitable to sell duck eggs because sold chicken eggs she only got a hundred per egg. But she realized that she can not carry two baskets of eggs. "I already have many customers for my chicken eggs. If I sell duck eggs, my customers will be disappointed," thought Ninin. Finally, Ninin refused his offer.

"You are a stupid girl! It is the easy way to collect money!" The man said angrily. Ninin ignored his words. She only sold chicken eggs and her customer became more and more.

One day she saw the crowd gathered in front of the house of the duck egg seller. There were also some police. The duck egg seller was arrested. "What's happen?" asked Ninin to someone.

A man answered, "The man made fake eggs. He bought chicken eggs and rubbed it with dyes so the color become blue as duck eggs. No wonder that he could sell his duck eggs more cheaper. His duck eggs was false!"

When she got home, she told her mother about the incident. "Thank God that you are not persuaded by him to sell his duck eggs. If you sold his eggs, maybe, you'll also arrested."

"Mother, are you still allow me to sell eggs?" said Ninin.

Her mother answered, "Yes, if you love to do it. Go ahead. Who knows you will be a big trader of eggs." Her mother stroked her hair. Ninin hugged her mother happily. (*)
