Chapter 10 - A Perfect Crime?

(Back at the station)

Sarah had finished narrating what had happened. Jack's face had a scowl on it, and the way he looked at the other two changed. He knew Sarah's course of dealing, and he was glad that she decided not to kill them.

"Don't worry. I only kill people who wish to kill me", she said as she smiled at Jack and whispered it into his ear. Jack just smiled back at her and resumed his duty as a policeman.

"I would like to listen if you would have anything to say", he said in a stern voice and looked at them with a scowl. The two of them nodded their heads, indicating that they indeed had something to say.

"We didn't molest that woman as she claims. She tore her dress on her own. If we did molest her, why would we be beaten up with our noses bleeding, and she would have a cut on her sleeve?", they asked.

Jack didn't ask anything and just put them into the cell, locking them up and putting them where they belonged. Just as he thought this was over, he got a call on his phone.

"Brixton Avenue. Come over as soon as you can", and the call ended. Jack had a smile on his face and felt his heartbeat quicken.

"Could this be my case which would help me in becoming one step closer to Sherlock?", he thought. Quickly, he ran out of the station and jumped into the car, turning on the siren and gunning it towards Brixton Avenue.

In a few minutes, he had reached the place and was now looking at the standard procedure that was followed, which was yellow tapes and forensics walking around. Just as he thought it was all, a notification popped up.

He was confused when he saw it pop up, but that was when he remembered that it was related to Sherlock, and the system would know much better than he would. He smiled as he lifted the yellow tape and went under, entering the scene.

A man came up to him in a white suit, covered from his head to toe. He wore a pair of goggles over his eyes and a green mask over his mouth. He looked at Jack and motioned for him to follow inside.

He followed and in a few minutes, he entered the scene where the body was lying on the kitchen floor. The body was charred black, and there was no way of making an identity of the body. He sighed out loud and began to look around to find something that might be of use.

There were no fingerprints as the skiing was burnt. There were a few strands of hair on his head, and he plucked one of them, and he kept looking around.

The kitchen in which he worked had a knife on the left side of the cutting board. Jack made a note of this point and kept looking around.

In his hand, was a lighter, which he had used to light up the gas stove, and that was when he thought to check the gas.

He looked at it and began checking the piped for leaks. But to his surprise, he couldn't find any leaks in the gas.

Just as he was wondering how this would have happened, something popped up on the screen in front of him.

[Clues Found 1/3]

He understood that this was one of the clues that he should be looking for, and began to follow this route.

"If the gas did not have a leak, then how would it blast and make this person burn to this extent?", he thought and followed the pipeline which was running in the kitchen. He checked the stove and saw that the control knobs were turned on.

"So, this is how the burning began? Did this person not notice the smell that was in the place as he entered?", he thought. Just as he was wondering about that fact, someone came in.

"We found this", he said and gave a wallet to him. Jack took it in his hand and began to look through the contents, and found his driver's license.

"Seems like this person has a name. Harold Robin. Aged fifty-six. Look him up in the database, and I need his medical history as soon as possible. And find me any family members of his if they are", he said to the person who brought the wallet and began to look around again.

He had only found one clue, and he had two left. Even finding the license was not something that was sufficient, so he ruled it out. He was convinced the gas leak was made by someone, and if they had come in, they would have had to sneak in.

He began to investigate every window and door that was in the house, to find any signs of breaking in. Everything was perfectly alright, and he was confused about what he was missing here.

"Found anything, Detective? Anything that we could use as a profile?", came a friendly voice from behind him. Jack smiled as he turned around and nodded his head sideways, indicating that he hadn't created anything.

"That is interesting indeed. If you can't create a profile, then this is going to be one tough nut to crack. Maybe, this is what they call a perfect crime? One with no evidence, perhaps?", he mumbled as he looked around at the place.

The place, which was supposed to be a lovely kitchen had its furniture burnt off, and every corner of it was charred. Jack still comprehended that this crime had clues, but he couldn't find any way to go over it.

"Any footage from the CCTV?", he asked in curiosity. The man nodded sideways, and Jack was disheartened. He put his hands into his pocket and walked out of the building.

"Gosh. If there was footage, why would they bother calling me in the first place? I am one of the only Profilers that is left in this line of work", he thought as he looked back at the building from which he came out, and looked back at that screen.

"Just what do you want me to find there?", he thought as he looked at the screen once more.
