Chapter 3 - Family of three

Time passed by quickly before he regained his composure. Jade wiped away his tears, turned off the stereo preparing to sleep. Closing his eyes he battled with the recurring images popping in his head before finally dozing off.

The next morning was stormy accompanied by winds. In the other end of the city a young woman was busy preparing to leave for work. She sat by the gate as she waited for the staff bus. Taking her mobile phone from her sling bag, she dialled one of the numbers in her contacts.

" I have been waiting for a long time, what is taking you so long to arrive?" She asked immediately after the call was connected.

" Uhm, we had a breakdown just some minutes ago and we are waiting for the mechanic. I assume it won't be long." Replied a man's voice from the other end.

" Breakdown??, When were you going to inform me cause I have been here for an hour and you are telling me now. I am going back home, you call me when you arrive." Phoenix angrily fired back as she turned to leave.

She had left her car at work yesterday after boarding the stuff bus. Her colleagues had planned a dinner outing yesterday.

Phoenix Jay, a young beautiful woman as known to many. She always graced her face with a smile and was comfortable to be around. Though she was 25 years of age, she had wrestled with life to be where she currently was.

Previously, her mother had to work hard to support her younger sister who was still in college but stopped after they started their own beauty salon and massage shop.

This made Phoenix the sole breadwinner in their family of three after her father divorced her mother and remarried. Of course they weren't poor but still they had to sweat in order to survive in the ever changing world. Their relatives laughed at them and her friends mocked and despised her when she started her business.

They called her a failure as she couldn't attend a high end university but rather went to a local training center. All sorts of bad names were given to her and her in-laws kicked her out tossing a divorce agreement to her face when she asked for financial assistance.

After the call, Phoenix immediately went back to her house. This was the house she bought with the money from the alimony after her mother's divorce and from her savings doing several part time jobs. Though the house was small, it still accomodated her and her family and she was grateful for it.

She arrived at the front door and took off her shoes before stepping inside. Jane, her mother was busy in the kitchen preparing breakfast for her sister Dinah.

" Aren't you supposed to be at work?" Jane asked as she came out from the kitchen with a platter of scones.

" Nah, our bus broke down along the way and I asked them to call me when they get here. Is Dinah still sleeping?" Walking towards the sofa, she sat down as she checked her phone.

" She isn't feeling too well and as she doesn't have lessons today, I asked her to stay for the day and go back to campus tomorrow morning." Her mother answered as she  took off her apron after setting the table. " Come and join us, guess you didn't have a proper breakfast, I will go call your sister."

Dinah was doing her final year at the local college. She had decided to study business administration so she could help her sister with her business. She had a petite and tall body frame as compared to Phoenix's slightly plump and shorter frame. The sister's had a three years age gap but some people might say Phoenix was the youngest of the two because of her body build.

After washing her hands, she took a seat at the dining table as she waited for her mother and sister. Moments later they emerged with her mother supporting her sister who looked like a lifeless doll.

Phoenix stood up to help her mother and pulled a chair for her sister.

" Have a seat, and don't you think you have to see the doctor? I can accompany you and mom." Asked Phoenix as she placed a glass of milk before her sister.

" I had already taken the medication,  and you have to leave for work so I will be fine after I rest." Replied Dinah as she took a sip from the glass.

" Have you forgotten that your sister is the boss, I will inform them and go to work later, after all your health is more important."
