Chapter 2 - That sunny Sunday

As Jade lay down on his bed after having his bath and dinner, he could not help caressing his eyes as he remembered that day. The day he lost the power to see clearly. Jade lost his eyesight after he and his team were ambushed at their military base. Being severely injured, he left the army to recuperate. He had fought and escaped death but this one time, though he survived, he lost something precious. Jade couldn't see clearly, he saw hazy blurred images.

Jade exhaled loudly as he vividly pictured the happenings of that day.

## Flashback ##

It was a beautiful sunny Sunday and his team was emersed in their morning training. The laughter together with loud panting sounds filled the base as they rounded the training ground. Sweat covered their tanned skin as it dripped down their backs wetting their shirts. Jade as the captain stood by the side giving out instructions. He took rounds at the same time passing out small remarks.

" Captain, when do you plan to have a girlfriend, you know we are agemates but my daughter is already two. And am sure the ladies would die to have you as the father of their kids." Asked one of the young soldier as he did push ups.

Jade looked at the young soldier as he contemplated on what to say. He smiled then responded, " who said I don't have one? Actually she is usually out of the city so you may have never seen her." He lifted his right hand after squatting down,  ruffling the young lad's hair then standing up he strode away.

After a strenuous exercise, the company went to prepare for breakfast. Jade remained behind as he inspected the property and surroundings. He stood facing away from the sun enjoying as the sun rays caressed his back.

Immediately as he turned around to head towards the grounds entrance, he heard an explosion next to where he was previously standing. Caught unaware, he failed to evade on time as he was thrown at a distance away. Hearing the deafening sound, the nearby soldiers ran over only to find their unconscious captain covered in blood.

## Present ##

Jade sighed as he shifted on the bed. He had no idea of what happened after being thrown away during the explosion but he remember waking up weeks later to total darkness. He doesn't not know who planted the bomb in their camp but what he was sure of was that he might be the main target.

That was the day he lost everything dear to him.

_ 'seems like fate has decided against me'_ he thought as he closed his eyes.

His heart ached as he wiped a teardrop at the corner of his left eye. He was locked away from the world. He wanted and hoped he could see again but reality was harsh on him as he had not succeeded in his previous surgeries. All were rejections.

In the darkness he felt around as he searched for the remote control. He had resorted to music and it has helped him to fight his inner demons. Jade felt around as he pressed the power on button on the top corner of the remote and the music started playing on the stereo system.

'Everybody hurts' by R.E.M started playing and it filled the whole room. This has turned out to be his pillar to continue on living. He had considered giving up living after his accident and experiencing the heartbreak.

Jade sang along to the song as he lay on top of the bed.

' when the day is long and the night,

the night is yours alone,

when you're sure you've had enough'

His voice trembled as he sang the chorus,

'Cause everybody hurts,

Take comfort in your friends'.

Jade couldn't not hold back his tears as he let them fall freely. It was unbearable, some of his friends had left him after being aware of his condition. Who could he take comfort from when all had left him and he was left all alone. He asked himself.

He cried like a baby as all the pain choked him up. He hated his helpless condition. He could not do anything to help himself but to wait for another transplant which he wasn't confident about.
