"This makes no sense to me" said Wura as she was certainly very confused, it made no sense to her at all.
Mero seeing her confusion was apologetic, of course she would be confused, he should have mentioned this earlier, preferably before they left.
"Yes I know it does not make sense and I apologize, you are confused now because it slipped my mind to inform you earlier" said Mero as Wura turned to look at him, her eyes full of many questions.
"What do you mean Mero?" asked Wura as she felt something odd, this was new information to her, and this was odd considering that she had made sure to keep herself updated on matters that concerned relief, so for her not to know about this attack in Windharm, it made her feel very worried.
"Windharm was attacked a few days ago by the East" said Mero.
"You were not informed about it because I preferred you to hear it from me and not to read it from the reports, but many things happened, and it slipped my mind, I apologize" said Mero as Wura frowned at him.
"So you hid it from me?" asked Wura.
"I would not say that Wura... I just did not want you to worry any more than you already did" said Mero as he looked at her and Wura remined frowning, she found that hard to belief.
More likely Mero hid several things from her under the guise of it being for her own good and safety, and she was honestly sick of it, but she knew that he meant well in the end.
"I see..." said Wura as she knew that it was better to just accept his explanation and apology, she did not want to be angry with him, it was a good day, there was no need for the both of them to be in a fight, especially not on this journey to Windharm.
"I understand your reasons... what I do not understand is why the East would go as far as troubling the poor innocent people of Windharm? That is obviously far away from their aim or focus" said Wura as she frowned, she wanted to understand the reason behind such a mad move, just thinking about it made her feel scared.
"I thought the exact same way Wura and I came to the conclusion that they were trying to distract us and force our hand" said Mero.
"You mean they wanted us to attack back?" asked Wura as Mero nodded.
"Something like that, they wanted us to shift our focus" said Mero as Wura's frown deepened.
"What a pitiful move from their part" said Wura as she frowned shook her head and scoffed, of all the pitiful things to do this was the lowest.
Of course she knew that there were no select solid rules in the art of war, but at least there was some dignity and courtesy, or at least she thought that there was, but it was certain that Olamide's mind was definitely not alright.
"Yes, I agree, but there is nothing for us to worry about... since we did not respond to their attack directly, it is clear to them that continuing past the border is just a waste of their time and resources, they are outnumbered in our land" said Mero.
"Hmmm... I am not sure about that Mero... if they were truly outnumbered they would not have succeeded in attacking Windharm" said Wura as she frowned, she was tired of this and she felt extremely worried.
"That is true in a sense... it all comes down to a matter of resources and what we can afford to lose or not" said Mero as he could tell that Wura felt a bit guilty for what happened in Windharm even though it was not her fault at all.
"Sure we could decide to set up protection for every small town and village nearby the border, but doing that would be at the expense of the knights we have on standby at the camp" said Mero.
"To be honest we will be scattered about and our defenses will be weakened so it is not your fault Wura, what happened happened because that is just how things in this kind of situation goes" said Mero as Wura sighed, she knew he was right but she could not help but still feel like she could have done something.
"I know... but what has been done to help those affected?" asked Wura.
"When it happened I made arrangements for the safety and comfort of those affected and they were sent tents while some few knights stayed around the town just in case the East tried to strike again" said Mero.
"That is minimal Mero... very minimal" said Wura.
"I know that, and it is for that reason that we are on our way to Windharm now" said Mero.
"I guess so..." said Wura as she sighed, she could only imagine what sort of pain and loss those affected were going through right now.
"I assure you that I did not try to intentionally hide anything from you Wura" said Mero as Wura looked at him.
"It is alright Mero, I know you did not, and I appreciate you telling me now" said Wura as she smiled at him.
"I understand, and I know that you are going to say that it is not my fault, and I know that you are right, so the best thing now is just for me to think of ways to better help the situation in the best way I can" said Wura.
"I agree with you on that Wura" said Mero as he nodded and smiled at her as she smiled back at him.
Mero turned his attention back to face the road ahead as Wura did the same, but she could not help but still feel a bit guilty on the inside, but she would rather keep that to herself.
...
It had been close to an hour that they had been moving at a steady pace. The sun had fully rose and it was cool in the early morning sky.
Wura slightly glanced at Mero as she tried not to make it obvious that she was looking at him.
He looked so serious, as if he was deep in his own mind and thoughts. Wura did not think anything bad about that, it was just that for the past what she felt was an hour, they had done nothing but rode in silence.
Drenching, quiet, silence nothing could be heard except for the steady galloping of both their horses as their hooves made a clicking sound as they made contact with the ground.
Normally, Wura had nothing against silence, it was not like she craved for noise, not at all, but right now, the silence was very killing, she was bored and she wanted to talk to someone.
Mero looked like he was not in a mood to talk, which was normal, he was not a talkative person, and he had not said anything at all for the past hour.
Wura did not know what they could even talk about? In all honestly the most they talked about these days were official matters, the war and the plans, there was nothing else to talk about.
Wura just realized that they did not really have a close relationship like that, besides everything that was going on, they had nothing else to talk about.
This was not like with Nora, because with Nora, Wura could talk about anything and anyone, but it was different with Mero.
Wura sighed internally, the silence was killing, she glanced at Mero once more and he did not like as if the silence bothered him one bit.
Well that was good for him, but she was tired of being alone with her own thoughts, she wanted to talk out loud for once, but she just did not know what to say to start a conversation.
"*Ahem* So..." said Wura as she cleared her throat and that seemed to pull Mero out of his thoughts as he turned to look at her and Wura looked at him, quickly searching for something else to say.
"How long until we reach Windharm?" asked Wura.
"With our steady pace, I believe we should arrive there before noon" replied Mero swiftly.
"Ahh I see..." replied Wura as with Mero's tone she could tell that there was nothing to be added to that statement.
"Yes" replied Mero as he turned his head and faced straight aheas.
Wura sighed internally again, so much for starting a conversation, it had died as quick as it had ended.
"You know it is funny, we have not run into the guards you sent ahead of us, and the guards that are following behind us are yet to be seen" said Wura as she gave a light chuckle.
"That is true... it means either everything is going along smoothly or terribly" said Mero as he hoped it was the first one.
"Really?" asked Wura in a bit of a worried tone as Mero looked at her.
"Yes but there is nothing to be worried about Wura, I am sure that everyone is safe and sound" replied Mero as he tried to show her a convincing smile but Wura was not convinced at all.
