Chapter 9 - The pleasant surprise

Munah could not believe himself as he made his way out of the office of the head of personnel that evening. He never envisaged that things will just turn around for some good at the snap of one's fingers. He relaxed on the chair in his new office and remembered the advice of the head of personnel, she seems to like him because giving such delicate words seem unlikely from someone of her position. He loved the job given but his boss is quite a character and from the little, he has garnered, she is quite an unpredictable character. He inspected the facilities that has just been mounted newly by the info-tech department on his table and side desk and shook his head in amazement. The desktop was an android apple. The intercom, printer, scanner, and photocopier were the best he has ever seen. He switched them on and discovered that they have all been connected to the Denson's empire local and international network system and wondered. He looked around the office again and went to the window from where he could see the balcony and the large flower vases which housed the beautiful yellow bushes. He looked away from the window and walked slowly to the fridge in the office, opening the fridge, he discovered that it was already filled with water and fruit drinks. He closed it and decided to switch on the wall television. To his surprise, it was a digital network connection. Munah sat down on the three-seater and watched the news program with interest before he heard the office doorbell. He rushed to open the door and in walked Adah. From his observation, she looked like a workaholic. She had been in a two-hour meeting with the founding members of the Denson's empire. He later understood that after that meeting, she had visited five departments and met with the South African contractors. It was also surprising that she had sent a lady from the tenth floor to deliver a message to him not to go but to wait for her. He had been waiting since then after finishing every one of his documents. Adah looked round in a flash and stood right at the center of the averagely wide office observing every detail and ambiance of the office. She later walked to the three-seater sofa and sat down. Munah watched her quite perturbed but apprehensive of her presence. He noticed that she was with a file and kept his calm.

" Sorry to keep you waiting but I needed us to talk and have an understanding of how effectively we are going to work together. Despite what Mrs. Randolph told you and educated you on, I feel I still have the final say." She said without looking at him. Munah just kept quiet and allowed her to continue.

"I want to have an understanding with you because I will need you in almost everything. However, I first want to swear you to an oath of secrecy because of the sensitivity of your responsibility and assignments. Promise me you can be trusted on this," she said and for the first time looking at him. Her eyes were imploring, fixed and there is something about it that Munah cannot rightly decipher.

" Since it is the demand of my responsibility, I promise you my loyalty. This job is important to me and like I explained, I will do my best." He said looking back at her.

" Thank you and I promise you will not regret this decision." She said and handed the file over to Munah. He took the file and kept it on the table and watched as she stood up from the seat.

"Please, I am very sorry for what happened earlier... I was just trying to show how grateful and elated..." Munah started confusedly

"Don't worry about that... you do not need to explain that." She said looking at him slightly.

"Thank you very much ma..." Munah started

"Tomorrow, You will have my full engagements and schedules so that you will prepare yourself. Also, your personal computer will be given to you tomorrow. I think it's late now for that. Moreover, sorry for keeping you up to this time. Hope your mother will understand." She said with a big smile while Munah smiled back as she made for the door. He opened the door for her and she walked out before he closed it and rushed to look at the file that was given to him. To his shock, it was a list of executive meetings all through the year to be attended. The file also includes all that she will be needing for the meetings, offices to get various information, and meeting venues. The file contains a whole lot of details about the doings of his boss and the office that prepared the file must know a lot. From what he gathered, he knew that his boss may be the chief of the empire but must learn not to trust everyone around her. She needs to be protected and this is an aspect that must be looked into. He stood up and went towards the door of his office, opening the door he came out and walked towards the lift. Entering the lift, he pressed the button and heaved as the lift went towards the seventeenth floor. He came out and entered the second office which is the office of the head of personnel. He entered and discovered that only the front desk officer was around, though she is almost on her way out. He requested for Mrs. Randolph and was simply shown the door to her office. He pressed the doorbell and was asked to come inside. He saw her relaxing on the sofa, her eyes on the screen, and in front of her on the beautifully crafted center table was a cup of coffee.

" You can sit down Mr. Munah," she said looking at him.

"Thank you..." he replied as he sat down.

"How may I be of help," she started reaching out for her cup of drink.

" Thank God I met you alone as I will want this meeting to be treated with great secrecy. Concerning the Chief, must all her meetings and activities be documented and exposed to the public eye of the organization?" He said all in one breath.

" This is so because there is enough security to take care..." Mrs. Randolph said as she dropped her cup on the table.

" What I mean is that it is risky. I will want us to do something unusual concerning this," Munah said looking at her.

" Like what?" She asked becoming interested.

" I will suggest her whole work schedule be rescheduled so that there will be an element of surprise. Let there be an aura of unpredictability about her schedules, especially the international trips and meetings." Munah said and hoped he has not bitten more than he can chew.

" Show me what you have in mind. work on your suggestions and let me see them." She said looking at him intently. Without a doubt, she knew that what the young man was saying is the truth and as one of the secret security agents detailed to the office of the chief of Denson's empire, she knows what is at stake and can sense what the young man is fearing. Mrs. Randolph is quite happy for him. He looks ambitious and seems to go about it with so much ease. She knows that Adah will be in safe hands. Mrs. Randolph knows his type, his focus, and his in-depth understanding of issues never ceases to amaze her. Working with Adah will be worth it for they are both young and can make crucial decisions without minding the

consequences. Indeed Adah has made the right choice in this appointment. Her only worry is Adah for she can be too demanding at times. Mrs. Randolph knows that working with women is not quite an easy cake. Emotions attached to responsibilities can be misunderstood thereby causing friction and bottlenecks which will hamper the effectiveness that is intended to yield. On the other hand, Adah is patient and kind, she is very tolerable and accommodating but there is absolute power with her now and nobody can truly define a man or woman with absolute power. Adah just needs someone mature that can help her to organize her office to gain trust among the thousands of staff that the Empire possesses. She got up and concluded that she will have to stick with him to succeed. There is something about him that even Mrs. Randolph cannot fully decipher. He has self-worth that to Mrs. Randolph looks intimidating but at the same time, she knows that he is very humble. She looked at her table and cleared the files while she remembered the confusion that played out in Munah's office with Adah. Adah can be emotional but rushing out is another thing that cannot be attributed to fear. She just saw his sincere show of gratitude and appreciation and holding Adah's hand may be going too far but it is what it is and he is justified by that action.
