Chapter 4 - The Date (Part 2/3)

Eddy walked into the restaurant in a simple tux that highlighted his manly figure. He was of an average height of 5-ft-2 that seemed a little short for a male but the muscles he had gained from his constant use of the gym did not make him look any less of a man. Amanda was awestruck and gazed at him fondly as he walked toward her as if he owned the restaurant. She felt as if she was staring at a long-lost love or a wish come true. His hazel-looking eyes and strong jaws further emphasized his manly spirit for her. In fact, Amanda had not even realised that he was by her until he pulled her out of her chair for a hug. She smiled as she hugged him back and deeply inhaled his cologne as well.

To Amanda's utter disappointment, Eddy did not even comment on her dress. She had taken extra time to dress up for him though… and the dress was new.

She disregarded all sentiments after Eddy uttered the words, "I'm sorry my love…"

Eddy looked at the excitement and other emotions that crossed Amanda's face and then he continued.

"You have been there for me through thick and thin in these years. I have also loved you for a while. Your dad has given us his blessing already so, please marry me", he went down on his knees in from of Amanda and opened the small box, with a ring!

Amanda's heart skipped a beat, and she replied a little foolishly,

"Huh?"

Eddy observed the dazed look on his friend's face and repeated the question.

"Will you marry me?"

Her trance was broken as the same waiter from before walked in with a small violin and started playing a beautiful melody in the background.

"How did – did Eddy ask me this?" Amanda asked herself quietly, but she was jumping for joy inside.

"He – he- wants to marry me".

Instead, she asked, "Aren't we moving a little too fast? "…but considering our years together …."

"Yes- yes I will marry you!",

"I only came for a boyfriend, but I am rather going away with a fiancé. Oh, thank you, my guardian angel". The next words from Eddy nearly made Amanda collapse. She felt as if someone had splashed cold water on her face so much that her heart dropped, and it took all her self-confidence to mask what she actually felt inside.

"What are you talking about?" he had said to her 'Yes' response.

"Do you think that she would like it?"

"You are one of the few people I trust, and you also know her."

"That's why I practised with you".

The violinist stopped playing the music at once as he felt awkward. I mean which guy in their right mind plays a prank like that. Do you test a proposal on a girl who obviously looks like she is into you?. The waiter left the scene so that the disgust on his face would not be seen by the two who were in their own world.

"You were pr-ra-practising with me?" Amanda stammered and asked as she tried hard to blink back the tears in her eyes.

"Yes," Eddy said once again.

"Do you think your sister, Ella, would like the proposal like this?... and the ring as well. I hope I got the right size",

"How did you feel when you heard me say those words?"

"WHAT!" Amanda nearly screamed.

"Are you seriously asking me this question?" but in the back of her mind she thought, "So Ella was really a person, I had forgotten that my sister had that name as well after our call yesterday."

"Hey, what's wrong with you. You are usually not like this. I want your honest opinion", he prompted her.

"Quick she will be here soon".

Amanda opened her mouth to speak again but as if on cue, her dear sister, Ella walked majestically into the restaurant with a serene smile on her face.

Amanda now could understand what was going on. She schooled her face and whispered to him as Ella was approaching.

"Uhmmm, I meant, she would love it, that's why I said yes!" Eddy was already up on his feet and looked at Amanda strangely as her sister walked in. Shrugging the uncertainty out of his mind, he lovingly watched as the girl approached them. Ella unlike Amanda was dressed in a black and gold-trimmed short mid-thigh dress. The dress further highlighted her slim figure. She was also in a six-inch heel that made her appear taller than she was especially near her new intended. She also had heavy makeup that made her appear breathtakingly beautiful.

He hugged Ella and kissed her on both cheeks. He also pulled out a chair for her and she sat down.

"Amanda, it will look weird if you sit here with us, how about using the table over there and we'll talk after, okay?"

Amanda nodded her head mechanically and sat down about two tables away from them. She didn't even hear it when her sister greeted her. Her hands were trembling so much that she clasped them tightly and held them under the table. Many thoughts run through her head at that time.

Did she feel betrayed? She did not even know if this was considered a betrayal, or she had been played… badly!

Did she feel surprised? Definitely! In fact, if there was a word that expressed more than that, it would have been the perfect one!

She had read many fictional and fantasy books where they talk about 'finding one's mate'. It would have been more understandable if that is what it was but here… "it was his own choice" she whispered, "...and that makes it hurt more!"

As it was her sister's birthday as well, it would have been better if they were really mates who had just realised that they were after spending all this time together. It would have made it easy for her to let go too but…

"This is not a fantasy book, so what is this? How did I miss the signs?"

She wiped a lone tear from the corner of her eyes and tried her best to compose herself so that no one would notice. But someone did, and the person looked even more furious contrary to the overwhelming sadness she felt.
