Emma was in the midst of his friends. A conversation was ongoing about the upcoming football match. At first, he sat, attentive, responding when a question was thrown at him or when a suggestion was made that he had to agree upon. Slowly, worry and uneasiness took him over.
He looked around the class. All were seated except for a seat close to a girl with glasses. They have just finished their morning row call and were about to start the first lesson, yet Diva was not in the class.
He wanted to ask the girl as he had seen her the previous day about Diva's whereabouts. But the worried look on her face discouraged him. She probably did not know where she was and was worried she might miss the first period. Late coming was prohibited in RHHS and anyone entering late to a class was not allowed in. Deep within he hoped she would not be late for the class.
He frowned and slammed his hand on the table. Startled, everyone looked at him. His friends stared confusedly at his behavior. Emma didn't have to look at them to know they were staring. He just leaned into his chair and closed his eyes.
It was new. His anxiety for someone he did not know or perceived he knew, was novel to him. The anxiety turned to restlessness, where he had to excuse his friends to use the bathroom.
Before leaving, Roger told him to be careful and not turn every person he sees on his way into a meal. Marvin did not utter a word and only looked at him in awe. Eclairs could only sigh.
His hands held onto the sink, his eyes accessing his reflection in the mirror and water dripping down from his now wet face and a few strands of his hair.
Why did he care?. Why should he care?. Her smiling face appeared in his head. Those full lips and long lashes. The curly edges reminded him of how cunning he was. He giggled.
Could it be love at first sight?. No, there was no such thing as love at first sight. From the little he knew about love, it was something that grew over time. It was never love at first sight. It's either a crush or an infatuation.
Why was he even explaining the dynamics of love?. What was happening to him?.
He was about to bang his hand on the sink when a boy exited one of the bathrooms. A junior. He cautioned himself. He should not lose control of himself or his temper just because of... a girl. He needed his intact mentality, hence he might go crazy because of this girl, Diva.
He hissed. Going back to the class he would have to conduct himself. No more thinking of Diva, or whatever her name was. He would blur her image and imagine she was not present. That girl was a distraction. No more overboard thinking, Emma. No more.
His plan failed.
The Mathematics teacher noticed how absent-minded Emma was in his class. On several occasions, he had found him gazing straight at him, and even when he stood in his front, he seemed to be non-existent. Like he was now an invisible being to Emma.
' So, would anyone tell me the answer to the question on the board? '. The voice echoed loud in the class and most of the students started whispering among themselves.
Everyone looked busy with hushed voices as they tried to ask the other for the answer. Only a few, Emma's friends and Diva, even Hailey was busy calculating and recalculating, saw that though the question was directed to the class, his eyes were fixed on Emma.
In a low, concerned voice, the teacher asked Emma. ' What's the problem, Emma? '.
